I don’t buy any paid subscriptions added to my box, but everyone I know who does raves about it, but I get everything they get for free too, so I guess I just don’t get it in a way...

Same price. It may look as though it's temporary or introductory but the sale was still up when a paid for a renewal after 7 months. I've always bought the 5 + 2 free months. $99.95 for 2 devices for 7 months.

Clear the updater and then update. Every now and again that updater needs the newer version.

Prime has been in and out a few times today, but they’re numerous other sources constantly available.

I stream 4k over wireless with no problem
Router is upstairs, main tv is downstairs
I get ~150 download over wifi in the living room
Box has a speedtest app on it, as long as you're getting 100+ over wifi you should be fine

That said, if you can hard-wire it to router that is ideal. Just not an option for me.
