Rep. Ruben Gallego (D., Ariz.) said on Tuesday that he does not believe Hillary Clinton owes the families of the victims of the 2012 Benghazi terror attacks an apology.
Some family members of those who died at the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, have said that Clinton told them the cause of the attack was a video critical of Islam, which inspired a spontaneous protest that grew out of hand. It turned out the attack was a planned, coordinated assault by terrorists unrelated to any video. Some of the Benghazi victims’ families have accusedClinton of calling them liars.
CNN host Carol Costello asked Gallego if Clinton owes the families an apology. Gallego quickly turned the question to Donald Trump’s recent controversy with the Khan family.
“The parents who lost their kids in Benghazi when the consulate came under attack, they have a far different view of this than Democrats do,” Costello said. “Do you understand where they’re coming from?”
“Well, absolutely, and I think their sacrifice is just as important as the sacrifice of the Khan family, and I think it’s also important for us to remember that there is no reason why they should be attacked or the Khan family should be attacked,” Gallego said. “It doesn’t mean just because one family was attacked or the other that it’s somehow equal.”
“They would say that Hillary Clinton owes them an apology,” Costello said.
“I think Hillary Clinton has stated clearly what occurred and how she feels she did not do anything wrong in regards to that family,” Gallego said before returning to criticize Trump.
