I was in Vegas when they recorded Street With No Name on top of the Horseshoe roof. Had just finished having a delicious meal at the Steakhouse in the Horseshoe.

I've read & heard a lot of comments knocking Edge's guitar playing. There are a lot of people & musicians that don't feel that Edge is a good guitar player. Those people think that just because he doesn't rip into solo leads is indicative of him being a weak guitar player. Those who think that or believe that are truly ignorant.
Edge's guitar playing is unique, for he has created an innovative style of guitar playing & guitar sound that sets him & the band apart from all others!!!
I play guitar & have been trying for a while to analyze his style & sound. You are absolutely right about hearing him playing 2 guitars at once. actualy there are times when you will hear even 3 guitars.
The reason behind that is the many guitar overlays that he incorporates in a song so as to create that full, rich, melodic sound effect that compliments the mood of Bono's lyrics & that drives the band & which is very hard to produce by one guitar.
In the words of Bono, Edge is a Zen Master of melodic guitar sounds...

Very well said...Edge created a style all his own, not copied from anyone preceding him and never copied by anyone since his emergence. To me that is what makes a great guitar player, even if he is essentially a "rhythm guitarist" Pete Townshend is another more famous for his rhythm playing than his leads...in fact, some of his lead playing is painful.

Edge gets 90% of his sound from delay effects. If you heard what he was playing clean with no effects, it would blow your mind how easy it is. bad is the perfect example of this. But he has it mastered and it is quite difficult to replicate

Not as tough as fav beatles or stones song question but hard to come up with just 1. Fav album is Zooropa, for songs still love 11:00 TickTock off UABRSky, Ultra Violet , I Will Follow.
Sorry to make enemies here but The Joshua Tree is hands-down the most overrated R&R album of all time. Nice listening but its not even a top 3 U2 album.

i recorded a version of "live at red rocks" from the king biscuit flower hour radio show one summer nite in the early eighties. it was two years before the video would even be released, so at the time, i had no idea that my recording was something noteworthy. my cassette recording included three songs to open the show that were not included in the video. "out of control", "an cat dubh", "into the heart"...

i listened to that recording maybe 500 times. and the first three songs set the tone of that concert.

to this day... when i listen to that tape (re-recorded to preserve), the cut out songs just get me all jacked up. incredible energy

You ever make it available on-line?

found some choppy video of the cut songs on u TUBE not long ago. also bought a bootleg CD about 5 yrs ago with the songs restored. its available out there if u look. takes the concert to a whole different level. i am guessing when U2 is someday too old to record new stuff, they will re-release that show in it's entirety. the video was obviously shot and exisits somewhere in a vault. i have no idea how the U tube people got a choppy copy of it - and the bootleg CD is some odd title... they obviously did what i did and recorded from king biscuit

Great topic. The Joshua Tree touches me today just like it did 20 years ago as a high school junior getting ready for the prom. Favorite song for me is Sunday Bloody Sunday due to my late mother's Irish heritage.

Honorable mentions:
Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses
Two Hearts Beat As One
I Will Follow
All I Want Is You
Exit
and Running to Stand Still (thanks GoGoBird)

By the way, R.E.M. does a cover of "One" imo is better than U2's even though I give props to Mary J Blige for her version of the song.

U2 is just an incredible band!!! I was not fortunate enough to have grew with their music. The first time I heard of them was watching the Superbowl halftime show and bought their compilation CDs of their 80s hits not long after their Superbowl performance and they just simply blew me away.

Up to that point, I actually thought boy band and spice girls were real music.

What really amazes me is the longevity of the band. How can they go for over 25 years without breaking up even once? Did they really like each other that much? Is it just a irish thing where they're extremely loyal to their lads? I'm surprised Bono didn't try out the solo gig? Also is there any underlying meaning to their band name "U2"?

never forget sitting in a basement high school card game with my buddies early in 1983...playing some poker and a guy brings over a few tapes for background music. U2 albumn (I think October)...anyway I did not know anything really of U2 other than knew the name and maybe a couple songs........He calmly and confidently says out loud "this band U2 will be the Band of the 80's there is nobody that will be close just watch...." .I guess he missed the 90's and the 00's!!! What a call that was...he was not bluffing... I picked up a couple casettes that weekend and was hooked ever since. Saw them live twice great shows esp Vertigo

Its true that Edge probably cannot play some of the other guitar players stuff reallly well but that is not important. He has created his own sound mainly because as he readily admits he was never a classically trained guitarist. Guitar playing is very subjective and what he has accomplished is pretty amazing.

Value, the boys have stayed together mostly because they love music and understand that none of them would be where they are without each other. They are very similiar to a great sports team in that they have flourished as a result of their understanding of each others capabilties and limitations. None were very accomplished musicians when they started so they have learned to play together and that is why their sound is so unique. They really are the ultimate overachievers and its that understanding of how lucky they are that has helped keep them together. BTW, their original name was The Hype but that didn't last for too long.
