Every year people disagree on what movie gets best picture. In the end it's all politics.

Remember that silent movie that won a couple of years ago? How many people do you know who've seen that piece of crap? Argo was also a piece of shit.

At least this year a good movie won.

Argo was awesome… you are in the minority there

I thought Captain Phillips was a slightly better movie then 12 Years A Slave.

I'm pretty sure I understand what you're saying, but not sure why you would say such, so please clarify...
12 years won, not because its the best movie, but because the voters felt guilt over slavery.

Hache, you're way too smart to ask why!! There was no way given the picture's content & the PC climate in this country that "12 yrs" was NOT going to win!! Just the way it is.

Agreed...... that one was predetermined for sure.

The only movie I've seen from the nominees is Wolf of Wall Street... and I think it was very overrated, good flick, but not legendary in any way.

Hollywood is usually a let down lately.

You want to win awards in Hollywood, make an Aids or a slave movie.. Pretty easy formula..

That goes without saying, maybe a movie about a poor illegal crossing the southern border and against all odds making it big
would bring accolades also in this politically correct environment.

I must say I saw 'Help" & the 'Butler' and though there was the obvious strain of political correctness they were pretty entertaining
and well received by all factions of society.

Not sure about 12 Slaves because it was one of the very few I didn't see.

But I did see, so far ...

American Hustle ( early on thought this might be the Best Movie winner, but only saw Wolf of Wall Street at this time )

Captain Phillips ( thought it was ok )

Dallas Buyers Club ( they got this one right by giving McConaughey and Leto the Award ) * also thought this out of what I saw was the Best Picture

Gravity ( Didn't like it.... had 3 Total actors in the whole Movie, and 1 only lasted under 5 minutes )

The Wolf of Wall Street ( it was ok, but only liked it because I knew some of the Real guys )

August: Osage County ( Meryl Streep was ROBBED ! .... I don't care that she has won 2 Oscars for Lead already ... she was the BEST Actress out of Any of the Movies I watched )

Blue Jasmine ( I thought this was a good Movie, even though I am Not a Woody Allen fan... Cate Blanchett was very Good... but NOT better than Streep ! )

Anyway... I still need to see 12 Slaves and Nebraska .....and I also have Her ... which I will watch... but sounds a little stupid.

Since when does number of actors in a movie determine how good it is?

Tom hanks is practically alone the entire time in Cast Away (not counting wilson) and it is a fantastic movie.

Others that come to mind are "2001 Space Odyssey" and Redfords newest picture "All is Lost"

I simply don't understand how the number of actors matters

Since posting this I have watched American Hustled and Dallas Buyer's Club.

I can honestly say the 12 Years A Slave was better than both of those movies.

But again, I don't think it was near as good as Wolf Of Wall Street.

I suppose when looking at this group of nominees, it's safe to say that 2014 was a poor year overall for movies...

Argo was a boring hunk of shit and most of it was made up. It just felt like a generic piece of turd from Hollywood.

You wanna complain? Why the hell did Gravity win so many awards?

I thought 12 Years A Slave was a great, important story but only an above average movie. Terrible job of editing. Every scene went on for about 10 seconds to long. We as audience members get it. You don't have to hit us over the head.

+1

Just consider the list of best picture nominees that didn't win the Oscar since 1970 and you can see how much trash is being produced in Hollywood. Anyone of these would be a easy decision over the crap they had this year.

A Clockwork Orange
MASH
Deliverance
American Graffiti
Chinatown
Jaws
Taxi Driver
Star Wars
Midnight Express
Apocalypse Now
Raging Bull
The Killing Fields
Goodfellas
A Few Good Men
Pulp Fiction
Shawshank Redemption
Fargo
Saving Private Ryan

Just to name a very few that were runners up.

If you put Shawshank Redemption against Forrest Gump does it still win?

That's the problem. Those are all classics up there but were they better than the other nominated movies?

I still think the Academy Awards are a farce. How can you have Stanley Kubrick not win an award for Best Director? Makes no sense.

Generally no. Looking at the list they got it right almost every year. Although I could make a strong case that "Raging Bull" was better than "Ordinary People" (a very good movie in it's own right), in 1980. My point is that today's movies lack substance compared to those made a decade ago and beyond.
