Price, Mete, Suzuki help Canadiens beat Wild 4-0
October 17, 2019
By The Associated Press

MONTREAL (AP) Carey Price made 17 saves for his first shutout of the season and Victor Mete and Nick Suzuki scored their first NHL goals in a first-period burst in the Montreal Canadiens' 4-0 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night.

Joel Armia and Brendan Gallagher also scored and Nick Cousins had an assist in his Montreal debut to help the Canadiens improve to 3-2-2. The 32-year-old Price has 45 career shutouts.

Alex Stalock stopped 28 shots for the reeling Wild. They dropped to 1-6-0.

Playing his 127th NHL game, the 21-year-old Mete opened the scoring with 5:23 left in the first. He found space in the slot, took a backhand pass from Cousins from behind the net and beat Stalock to the glove side. That ended the longest goal drought to start a career in Canadiens history, a mark previously held by Mike Komisarek at 122 games.

Armia connected on a 5-on-3 power play with 2:28 left, and Suzuki scored with 37 seconds remaining in the period. Gallagher finished the scoring in the third period.

ISLANDERS 3, JETS 1

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Mathew Barzal scored two second-period goals and Semyon Varlamov made 32 saves in New York's victory over Winnipeg.

Nikolaj Ehlers had a power-play goal for Winnipeg and Connor Hellebuyck made 23 saves.

The Islanders didn't get their sixth shot until 7:41 of the second period - and it was a power-play goal by Barzal that tied it 16 seconds after Dmitry Kulikov went to the penalty box for tripping.

Barzal broke the tie with 17 seconds remaining in the second period.

CANUCKS 4, BLUES 3, SO

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Josh Leivo scored the lone shootout goal and Thatcher Demko stopped 31 shots in Vancouver's victory over St. Louis.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Over/under win totals for the NBA this season:

33.5— Bulls

31.5— Thunder

27.5— Knicks, Grizzlies

26.5— Wizards

24.5— Cavaliers

23.5— Hornets

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here….

13) Chiefs 30, Broncos 6:
— Costly win; star QB Mahomes left in 2nd quarter with an injured knee.
— Word is that Mahomes dislocated his knee; an MRI will show if there was any ligament damage.
— Chiefs broke game open with a defensive TD when they were leading 13-6.

— Denver’s offense stunk; Troy Aikman seemed annoyed with Joe Flacco’s effort.
— Broncos missed an easy FG, failed on a fake punt; not their best night.
— Denver is 13-26 in its last 39 games.

12) Houston 8, New York 3— Astros grab a 3-1 series lead, with Verlander/Cole in line to pitch the next two games.

11) Chiefs’ backup QB is Matt Moore, who is 15-15 as an NFL starter in his 11 years in the NFL, mostly with the Dolphins. He’s started only five games since 2012.

My lasting memory of Moore was on HBO’s Hard Knocks, when he was talking to then-rookie QB Ryan Tannehill, who said he didn’t know who the other three teams in the AFC East were.

“How can you not know that?!?!” Moore was as incredulous as I was.

10) How would you like to be Gerrit Cole’s agent? Cole hasn’t lost a game since May 22; Astros won his last 16 starts and after the World Series Cole will be a free agent. He earned $13.5M this year, figures to more than double that going forward. 3% (agents’ fee) of $27M is $810,000.

9) Next two years, by the way, Astros are on the hook with Zack Greinke at $35M a year, and Justin Verlander at $33M a year. 3% of $35M is $1.05M.

8) UCLA 34, Stanford 16— Cardinals fall to 3-4; they’re down to their #3 QB and are in danger of their first losing season since 2008.

7) QB Brock Osweiler retired from the NFL this week, with a career record of 15-15 and career earnings of $41,396,679. Being a backup QB is profitable work.

6) In September, state of Pennsylvania took in $194.5M in sports bets, wth $19.3M in revenue, with 81.2% of the bets via online/mobile wagers.

5) Duke’s basketball team is allergic to true road games, but they seem to like Madison Square Garden in NYC:
Nov 5-6: Duke vs. Kansas…….Michigan State vs. Kentucky
Nov 21-22: Duke vs Cal……..Georgetown vs Texas

4) Mets told Brooklyn Cyclones’ manager Edgardo Alfonzo that his contract won’t be renewed, even though he won the New York-Penn League championship this season. Go figure.

3) Atlantic 14, Mountain West will have a challenge series next (2020-21) basketball season, which should help their non-conference schedules; MW recently had the same thing with the MVC. Hopefully some of the games will find their way to TV (CBS College Sports?)

2) Sill trying to process that John Beilein is coaching the Cleveland Cavaliers; would love to know how guys like him, Billy Donovan, Brad Stevens compare coaching NBA with college ball.

1) Personal update; my eye operation will be Wednesday, which means that this site will get its first extended downtime since 2001 for a week or so, starting next week.

OIL SLICK

The Detroit Red Wings might want to employ three defensemen at once Friday night as they face the unenviable task of stopping the Edmonton Oilers. Connor McDavid and Co. are ripping through the NHL right now with six wins in their opening seven games, and are considerable favorites against a Red Wings team that faced the Calgary Flames a night earlier.

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl have combined for 32 points through the first seven games, and should threaten another multi-point showing against Detroit; we like the Over here, as well as literally any point prop involving these two.

BIG, BAD BRUINS

The Toronto Maple Leafs have no doubt had their fill of the Boston Bruins – but alas, they have to face them at least four times this season, starting with Saturday's encounter at Air Canada Centre. There are two trends working in the Bruins' favor heading into this one, with the road team having won three of the past four meetings and Boston owning a 3-1 SU record over that stretch.

Combine these trends with the Maple Leafs having lost one of their top offensive players (more on that later), and it's a fine recipe for a Boston SU victory; alternatively, you can opt for the Bruins on the +1.5 puckline if you want something safer.

KINGS OF THE ROAD

Home ice hasn't been much of an advantage at all for the Calgary Flames or Los Angeles Kings in their recent head-to-head series, which bodes well for the Flames heading into Saturday's tilt at Staples Center. The road team is a sizzling 8-3 SU in the last 11 encounters between the Pacific Division Rivals, and has outscored the home side by an absurd 14-5 margin in the past three games.

It's also notable that the Kings' 17 home victories last season were the second-fewest of any Western Conference team, while the Flames led the West and ranked second in the NHL with 24 road wins.

WHAT TIME IS IT?

You could hardly blame the Vancouver Canucks for wanting a little Frosted Flakes as their pre-game meal for Sunday's meeting with the host New York Rangers. This game carries a 1 p.m. ET start time, which translates to 10 a.m. local time for the West Coast-based Canucks.

While there isn't a long history of super-early starts for Vancouver, the Canucks did play two games last season that began this early; they lost them both, while getting outscored 8-3 in the process. Not only do we favor the Rangers to win this one outright, we see the Canucks coming in Under their team goal total.

GOALIE PROFILE: DEVAN DUBNYK, MINNESOTA WILD

It feels like a lifetime ago that Dubnyk was a finalist for the Hart and Vezina Trophies. The veteran netminder is off to a dreadful start to the 2019-20 campaign heading into the weekend, and could see himself losing playing time to backup Alex Stalock as a result.

Not only has Dubnyk lost all five of his starts to open the season, he has has surrendered four or more goals in four of them while getting pulled from a 7-4 loss to Pittsburgh on Oct. 12 after getting torched for five goals on just 23 shots. If you see Dubnyk starting for Minnesota, lean toward the opposing team – at least, until Dubnyk gets things sorted out.

INJURY UPDATE, JOHN TAVARES, TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS

The Maple Leafs' offensive attack has taken a significant hit after Tavares suffered a broken finger in Wednesday's 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild. Tavares, who scored a goal in the win, is expected to miss the next two weeks, putting even more pressure on No. 1 center Auston Matthews to keep the offense humming.

Tavares has three goals and four assists through the first eight games of the season after scoring 40 goals in his first year with the hometown Maple Leafs. Look for Matthews to see an uptick in playing time as a result, making him an even better goals prop option.

HAT TRICK TRENDS

• Games that have gone to extra time have been largely low-scoring affairs over the previous seven days. Overtime and shootout results have gone below the total eight of nine times this past week, with 24 total Unders compared to 23 Overs in the same span. The Over play is still a slightly better option for the season at 52.2 percent.

• Hot starts from the Oilers, Carolina Hurricanes and Buffalo Sabres have moved all three teams significantly higher in the Stanley Cup futures odds. The Oilers have jumped to +2200 to win the championship, up from +3300 to open the season. Carolina has vaulted from +3300 to +2000, while the Sabres have seen the biggest move, from +6600 all the way to +3300.

• When some teams rise up the odds, others have to fall – and the Dallas Stars have taken one of the biggest tumbles of any team in the league. The Stars opened the season at +1600 to win the Stanley Cup, the seventh-best odds in the league. But a 1-6-1 start to the campaign has dropped Dallas all the way down to +2800, behind 16 other clubs.

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) Nathan MacKinnon scored 3:03 into overtime to give the Colorado Avalanche their sixth victory in seven games this season, 5-4 over the Florida Panthers on Friday night.

Andre Burakovsky scored twice, Joonas Donskoi had a goal and two assists, Matt Nieto also scored and Philipp Grubauer stopped 40 shots for Colorado. Jonathan Huberdeau scored twice for Florida, Brett Connolly and Frank Vatrano added goals and Sergei Bobrovsky made 36 saves.

Connolly gave the Panthers a 4-3 lead with 5:55 left in the second, and Burakovsky tied it 16 seconds later when he banged in a rebound.

OILERS 2, RED WINGS 1

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - James Neal and Ethan Bear scored, Mikko Koskinen made 25 saves and Edmonton beat Detroit to regain sole possession of the overall NHL lead.

Darnell Nurse had two assists to help the Oilers improve to 7-1-0. Mike Green scored for Detroit. Coming off a 5-1 loss at Calgary on Thursday night, the Red Wings have lost four in a row to drop to 3-5-0.

Neal opened the scoring eight minutes into the second period when a long rebound came out to him for his NHL-leading ninth goal of the season. He has already surpassed the seven goals he had last season with the Calgary Flames.

BLACKHAWKS 3, BLUE JACKETS 2, OT

CHICAGO (AP) - Jonathan Toews scored 46 seconds into overtime, Robin Lehner made 37 saves and Chicago beat Columbus.

Toews drove to the net and knocked a rebound of Patrick Kane's shot from the right circle past Elvis Merzlikins to give Chicago its second straight win. It was Toews' first goal of the season.

Alex DeBrincat tied it at 2 with a power-play goal midway through the third period. Drake Caggiula also scored for Chicago, and Kane had with two assists. Pierre-Luc Dubois scored his third goal in four games and Markus Nutivaara connected early in the third for the Blue Jackets.

DUCKS 4, HURRICANES 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Adam Henrique and Troy Terry scored in the first period, Ryan Miller made 22 saves and Anaheim remained unbeaten at home.

Carter Rowney scored a short-handed goal to put the Ducks up 4-0 early in the second period, chasing Carolina goalie Petr Mrazek. Jakob Silfverberg also scored in the second period for the Ducks, who are off to a 6-2-0 start under new coach Dallas Eakins after missing the playoffs last spring for the first time since 2012.

Haydn Fleury scored his first NHL goal for the Hurricanes, who lost in two of their three stops on a California road swing after a 5-1-0 start to the season. Erik Haula scored the Canes' opening goal before leaving with an injury from a check by Anaheim's Josh Manson.

CAPITALS 5, RANGERS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - John Carlson added three assists to his historic start, T.J. Oshie scored two power-play goals and Washington beat New York.

Carlson assisted on one of Oshie's goals and scores by Nic Dowd and Michal Kempny in the Czech defenseman's return from a hamstring injury. With 17 points, Carlson tied Edmonton captain Connor McDavid for most in the NHL, and he leads the league with 14 assists.

Garnet Hathaway also scored for Washington, and Braden Holtby stopped 26 shots.

Pavel Buchnevich and Artemi Panarin scored for New York. Henrik Lundqvist stopped Jakub Vrana on a penalty shot and made 29 saves

PENGUINS 4, STARS 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Kris Letang scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and added an empty-netter to help Pittsburgh beat Dallas for its fifth straight victory.

Jared McCann and Patric Hornqvist also scored for Pittsburgh and Matt Murray made 22 saves.

Roope Hintz and John Klingberg scored for Dallas.

Saturday’s 6-pack

Over/under win totals for the NBA this season:

48.5– Golden State

47,5— Indiana

46.5— Toronto, Portland, San Antonio

44.5— Miami, Brooklyn

42.5— Orlando

40.5— Dallas

Quote of the Day
“It was insulting, for sure. Once I got cut [on Aug. 31], I could have just come here [to the Jets] and not stayed there and re-sign. When they re-signed me, I was thinking that I was good. Two weeks later, I was gone. So, it’s like, ‘Why did I waste my time?’ Because at the end of the day, it was kind of a waste of time for me.”
Jets’ WR Demaryius Thomas, talking about being traded by the Patriots

Saturday’s quiz
Who was coach of the Golden State Warriors before Steve Kerr?

Friday’s quiz
Pacers, Nuggets, Spurs, Nets are the four NBA teams that were once in the ABA.

Thursday’s quiz
Last time the NY Knicks were in the NBA Finals was 1998-99; they lost to the Spurs.

*****************************

Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

13) I’m wondering how many fantasy football leagues there are in this country, with one team in every league now scrambling for a new QB with Patrick Mahomes out for at least three weeks.

Mahomes got relatively good news, with no ligament damage on top of his dislocated kneecap, but he’ll be wearing a brace when he returns to action.

Matt Moore (15-15 as a starter in 11 seasons) is the Chiefs’ new #1 QB; they still have to sign a backup for him.

12) 50 years ago this week, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar made his NBA debut with the Milwaukee Bucks, who had gone 27-55 the year before, their first season in the NBA.

Milwaukee went 56-26 in Jabbar’s rookie year, losing the Eastern Conference final, then went 66-16 the next year and won their only NBA title. Bucks averaged 60.8 wins in Jabbar’s first five seasons; they traded him to the Lakers after a 38-44 season in 1974-75.

Here’s the thing; I think Kareem is the best basketball player ever, but because he played before ESPN existed and because he drifted out of the public eye after he retired, people forget just how dominant a player he was, in high school, college and the NBA.

11) Braves’ star 1B Freddie Freeman had elbow surgery this week, with three fragments taken out of his sore arm, explaining why he struggled late in the season.

10) New York 4, Houston 1— This was the first game in postseason history where both teams scored in the first inning but then didn’t score the rest of the game.

James Paxton allowed 31 first inning runs this year, the most in the majors.

9) Sacramento Kings offered guard Buddy Hield $90M for four years, which he termed “an insult”; turns out he would be less insulted with a 4-year, $110M offer.

The NBA is really profitable, so they won’t miss my $200, but I’m going to pass on the NBA package on DirecTV this season, for the first time in a long time.

I mean, if Hield in indeed insulted by making $22.5M a year, so be it, but keep it to yourself; that kind of attitude, plus guys taking games off when they’re not hurt, turns my stomach.

If that makes me the old man bitching at kids on his lawn, then thats fine, too.

8) Over the last 20 years, former NFL running back Warrick Dunn has donated 173 homes nationwide, thanks to Warrick Dunn Charities as part of its “Home for the Holidays” initiative, which helps single-parent families achieve homeownership. Good for him.

7) Marshall 36, Florida Atlantic 31— Thundering Herd scored TD with 0:36 left to win a wild game in Boca Raton; Knox had 22 carries for 190 yards, 2 TD’s for 4-3 Marshall.

6) Not sure why FOX has John Smoltz as its #1 baseball analyst: he seems to like golf better than baseball. I have four guys here who would be a better choice than Smoltz:
— Ron Darling— Mets’ TV analyst has postseason TV experience.
— Mark Sweeney— Padres’ TV analyst. Younger guy, very smart.
— David Cone— Bronx TV analyst, is smart/funny and would be great on a national stage.
— Bob Brenly— I’m partial to former managers as TV analysts; Brenly is very good.

5) Zion Williamson (knee) has a sore knee, is expected to miss the first few weeks of the NBA season, which has to scare the hell out of Pelicans’ coaches/fans. Williamson sat out a decent amount of Duke’s season LY, which is a bright red flag.

4) Why do some college football teams put the players’ numbers on the side of their helmets? Looks dumb; much prefer having the team’s logo on both sides of the helmet, number on back.

3) Turns out that CC Sabathia threw the last three pitches of his career with a partially separated left shoulder. 251 regular season wins, 10 in playoffs; Sabathia will be in Cooperstown someday.

2) Luxor Casino in Las Vegas extended comedian Carrot Top’s contract for five years, good news for people who like to laugh while on vacation. Carrot Top’s dad worked for NASA, he was an actual rocket scientist.

1) Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook came in the mail Friday, always a good day; this means that college basketball is right around the corner.

Hughes beats Hughes, Devs edge Canucks
October 19, 2019
By The Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Tyson Jost had three goals, Pavel Francouz made 44 saves, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-2 Saturday night to remain the only NHL team without a regulation loss this season.

Colorado's 7-0-1 start is the second-longest opening point streak in franchise history, behind only the 9-0-2 start in 2000-01.

Jost completed his first career hat trick with a pair of goals coming 2:49 apart early in the second period.

Colorado also got goals from Gabriel Landeskog, Nazem Kadri and Mikko Rantanen. Colin Wilson had three assists.

Yanni Gourde and Victor Hedman scored for the Lightning, who returned home after a 3-2-1 road trip. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 17 shots.

DEVILS 1, CANUCKS 0

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Jack Hughes scored his first career goal in his first NHL game against his older brother Quinn Hughes, helping the Devils top the Canucks.

Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 25 shots in his third career shutout, sending New Jersey to its second straight victory after starting the season with six straight losses.

Jack Hughes, 18, played in his eighth NHL game after he was selected by New Jersey with the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft. Quinn Hughes, 20, was a first-round selection by Vancouver in 2018.

There were approximately 80 Hughes family members and friends on hand for their first NHL matchup.

Thatcher Demko made 23 saves for Vancouver.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 3, PENGUINS 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 29 shots against his former team, leading the Golden Knights to the road win.

Fleury recorded his 445th win, tying Terry Sawchuck for seventh on the NHL career list. Fleury, who made his second career start for Vegas against the Penguins in Pittsburgh, also registered his 57th career shutout.

The Golden Knights won for the fourth time in five games. Paul Stastny scored his fourth of the season, a power-play goal in the second period, and William Karlsson and Mark Stone added empty-netters in the final 90 seconds.

Tristan Jarry made 21 saves for Pittsburgh, which had won five in a row.

MAPLE LEAFS 4, BRUINS 3, OT

TORONTO (AP) - Morgan Rielly scored his second goal of the game on a deflection of Mitch Marner's shot 3:54 into overtime, giving Toronto the victory.

Alexander Kerfoot and Dmytro Timashov also scored for the Maple Leafs, and Marner had two assists. Frederik Andersen stopped 42 shots.

David Pastrnak had a goal and an assist, and Jake DeBrusk and Danton Heinen also scored for the Bruins. Jaroslav Halak finished with 25 saves.

STARS 4, FLYERS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Roope Hintz, Esa Lindell and Corey Perry scored to help Dallas snap a five-game losing streak.

Ben Bishop stopped 38 shots for the slow-starting Stars, who improved to just 2-7-1. The Stars only took 16 shots against a listless Flyers team playing their first home game in 10 days.

Sean Couturier scored for Philadelphia, and Carter Hart made just 12 saves.

PANTHERS 3, PREDATORS 2, SO

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Vincent Trocheck scored the deciding goal in the shootout to give Florida the road win.

Denis Malgin and Brett Connolly scored in regulation for Florida, which has won two of three. The Panthers have gone to overtime in four of their eight games this season.

Florida's Sam Montembeault made 25 saves and denied all three Nashville shooters in the shootout.

Roman Josi and Kyle Turris scored for Nashville, which has lost three of four. Ryan Ellis had two assists for the Predators, who played their first overtime game of the season.

ISLANDERS 3, BLUE JACKETS 2, OT

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Brock Nelson scored 33 seconds into overtime, lifting the Islanders to their fourth straight win.

Nelson beat Joonas Korpisalo from the slot off a feed from Nick Leddy.

Columbus' Boone Jenner tied the score late in the second period when he pounced on a puck that fell out of New York goalie Thomas Greiss' glove after a shot by Dean Kukan. The third period was scoreless.

Mathew Barzal and Michael Dal Colle also scored for the Islanders. Greiss had 34 saves.

Seth Jones scored and Korpisalo finished with 31 saves as Columbus lost in overtime for the second consecutive night.

St. Louis dropped its fourth straight game. Jaden Schwartz and David Perron scored for the Stanley Cup champions, and Jake Allen made 20 saves in his first home start since Jan. 8.

COYOTES 5, SENATORS 2

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Conor Garland had a goal and an assist, Antti Raanta stopped 34 shots and the surging Coyotes outlasted the Senators.

Kyle Capobianco posted his first NHL goal for the Coyotes, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson also scored in the first period. Carl Soderberg added a goal in the third period and Lawson Crouse had an empty-netter for Arizona, which has 20 goals during a five-game points streak.

Raanta, who was injured most of last season, earned his first win since last Nov. 2 against Carolina.

The Senators made a late push, pulling within two goals after Vladislav Namestnikov and Chris Tierney scored in the third period. Craig Anderson stopped 23 shots.

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a football Saturday…….

13) Texas 50, Kansas 48— Les Miles is going to build a winner in Lawrence; this was the first game as offensive coordinator for Brent Dearmon, who was a head coach at the NAIA level LY.

Texas kicked a 33-yard FG at the gun to win this game, but good things are ahead for Kansas.

12) Oregon 35, Washington 31— Huskies led 28-14 with 9:00 left in third quarter, but Oregon rallied back for the win, scoring winning TD with 5:10 left. Fun game to watch.

11) Illinois 24, Wisconsin 23— Badgers hadn’t trailed in any game this season until kid from Illinois made a 39-yard FG at the gun. This is the biggest pointspread upset so far this year.

10) Oklahoma 52, West Virginia 14— Austin Kendall is WVU’s quarterback:
— As a freshman in 2016, threw 16 passes as a backup QB for Oklahoma.
— Red-shirted the 2017 season.
— Last year, he threw four passes as a backup QB for the Sooners.

Kendall graduated from Oklahoma in three years; he is working on two Masters’ degrees. When he decided to go to West Virginia, the Sooners tried to block the transfer, because WVU is a big X rival of the Sooners, but they eventually relented.

9) Florida Atlantic coach Lane Kiffin posted a pic on Twitter showing three officials walking on the field, all using seeing eye dogs. Thats going to be an expensive tweet.

8) Florida 38, South Carolina 27— Gators’ QB Trask, who didn’t start for his high school team, threw for 200 yards, four TD’s as Florida improves to 7-1 on a rainy day in Columbia.

7) Upsets of the Week:
— Illinois (+30.5) 24, Wisconsin 23
— Vanderbilt (+21) 21, Missouri 14
— Georgia Tech (+18) 28, Miami 21 (OT)
— Oregon State (+10.5) 21, California 17
— Eastern Michigan (+10) 34, Western Michigan 27
— Baylor (+8) 45, Oklahoma State 27

6) Baylor 45, Oklahoma State 27— Matt Rhule went 28-23 coaching Temple (20-7 the last two years); he is 15-17 at Baylor, but 7-0 this year- the guy can coach.

5) Georgia Tech 28, Miami 21 OT— Yellow Jackets scored a defensive TD, scored on a fake punt and blocked a 25-yard FG near the end of regulation. Hurricanes missed three FG’s in all, all of them 34 yards or shorter.

Miami desperately needs to recruit a kicker, or find a soccer player on campus who can fill the void; they’ve missed six FG’s of 34 or less yards this season, plus two PAT’s.

4) Ohio U 45, Kent State 38— Game was 24-all at half; Golden Flashes (20-1) cashed in at SouthPoint Casino in Las Vegas, scoring the first TD of the day. Yes, you can bet on that.

Ohio U had a great onside kick in this game; their kicker just drilled the ball straight ahead, it hit the Kent State player 1o yards away in the helmet, popped in the air, and #81 on Ohio caught it.

3) Virginia Tech 43, North Carolina 41 OT— Starting in the 5th overtime, teams alternate 2-point conversion tries to decide the winner; I think this was the first time it actually happened.

2) Appalachian State 52, UL-Monroe 7— 6-0 Mountaineers are ranked #24 in country, with a win at North Carolina. Not often a Sun Belt team gets ranked nationally.

1) Louisiana Tech 45, Southern Mississippi 30— Total on this game was 58.5; always helps the over when the opening kickoff gets run back for a TD. Tech is 5-1 vs I-A opponents, averaging 45 ppg.
