Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a football Saturday…….

13) First of all, many thanks to Lamarr, Gregg, my friend Bobby and all the nice people at the MGM Grand sportsbook for an excellent day full of football and food.

MGM Grand sportsbook is a good place; comfortable chairs, big screens, and lot of good food options very nearby (deli, pizza, plus very good hamburgers).

12) South Carolina 20, Georgia 17 OT— This game scrambles the national title picture; Dawgs turned ball over four times (-4), missed a 42-yard FG on the last play of the game.

The loss hurts Notre Dame as much as Georgia, seeing how the Fighting Irish lost in Athens.

11) Oklahoma 34, Texas 27— Game was only 10-3 at halftime; Sooners outgained Texas 511-252, but they were -2 in turnovers. Hurts ran the ball (17 carries/131 yards) better than he threw it (16-28/235 yards), but he is now 32-2 as a college starter.

10) UNLV 34, Vanderbilt 10— Mountain West finishes with a 9-10 SU record against Power 5 conferences this year, despite being an underdog in 18 of the 19 games.

9) Northern Illinois 39, Ohio U 36— Bobcats led 21-10 at halftime, but NIU kicked a 37-yard FG with 0:33 left to post the upset win.

8) Louisville 62, Wake Forest 59— Demon Deacons scored 28 points in the 4th quarter, the most points an ACC team has ever scored in the 4th quarter of a loss.

7) Upsets of the Week:
— Bowling Green (+25) 20, Toledo 7
— South Carolina (+24) 20, Georgia 17 OT
— UNLV (+15) 34, Vanderbilt 10
— Northern Illinois (+7) 39, Ohio U 36
— Louisville (+6.5) 62, Wake Forest 59
— Tennessee (+6.5) 20, Mississippi State 10
— Georgia State (+6.5) 31, Coastal Carolina 21

6) Iowa State 38, West Virginia 14— Next time a big-$$ school hires a new coach (USC, UCLA?) they should hire Iowa State’s Matt Campbell; very good coach.

5) Baylor 33, Texas Tech 30 OT— Bears are 6-0; they tied this game on the last play of regulation. Now the schedule gets a lot harder; they still have to play Oklahoma State, TCU, Oklahoma and Texas. They’re already eligible for a bowl game.

4) Temple 30, Memphis 28— First loss for the 5-1 Tigers, who rallied back from down 23-7 to within 30-28 with 9:58, but that was as close as they got. Total yardage was 492-456 Memphis, but the Tigers turned the ball over four times (-2).

3) Minnesota 34, Nebraska 7— Golden Gophers are 6-0 for the first time since 2003, figure to be ranked in the top 25 next week for the first time in five years; they ran the ball for 322 yards on a 37-degree day and converted 8-13 third down plays.

2) Penn State 17, Iowa 12— Hawkeyes lost 10-3 at Michigan last week; they have serious issues on offense. PSU converted 10-19 on third down, QB Clifford ran ball 16 times for 52 yards, mostly on some of the important third down plays.

6-0 Nittany Lions host Michigan and College GameDay next week.

1) Wisconsin 38, Michigan State 7— If Notre Dame had Wisconsin’s resume, they’d be #1 in the country right now; Badgers have outscored opponents 255-29 with four shutouts, with decisive wins over Michigan and Michigan State- they visit Ohio State October 26.

Aston-Reese has 2 goals and assist, Penguins beat Jets 7-2
October 13, 2019
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) Injuries to some key players has forced the Pittsburgh Penguins to play a simpler game, and it's working out quite well for them.

Zach Aston-Reese, Sam Lafferty and Jake Guentzel each had two goals to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 7-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday night.

Dominik Simon also scored and Aston-Reese also had an assist for the Penguins. Tristan Jarry stopped 27 shots.

''We talk a lot about being hard to play against,'' Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said. ''It starts with your own puck possession, the decisions you make, the line changes, when you change. You put your teammates in good positions because you change at the right time. The tracking on the puck and the back pressure on the puck so you have numbers back.

''For me this is the definition of being hard to play against and it's a recipe for success, regardless of who's in your lineup.''

Forwards Nick Bjugstad, Alex Galchenyuk, Evgeni Malkin and Bryan Rust are all on Pittsburgh's injured reserve list but the Penguins improved their record to 4-2-0 with their second win on the road this week.

''We've got different guys stepping up and we've got guys coming out of the lineup,'' Guentzel said. ''So it just kind of happens like that and when you lose star power like that you've just got to be simple and we're getting better at it.''

Mathieu Perreault and Mark Scheifele had goals for the Jets, and Laurent Brossoit finished with 21 saves.

Jarry, playing his first game as a starter in three weeks, shook off a lucky goal from Perreault that gave the Jets a 1-0 lead in the first period. Perreault's centering pass from behind the net bounced off a defender's stick and in.

''It's obviously something you can't control, it's something that just happens, part of the game, a weird bounce and you just have to get back and focus on what you need to do,'' Jarry said.

Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice thought the turning point was a tripping penalty in the first period that gave Pittsburgh it's second goal, followed just 41 seconds later by a third.

''We take a penalty we don't like, and then we're down 3-1,'' he said. ''We were in a fairly tight game. Not a heavy advantage to either team shot wise or chance wise. That's where I thought it turned for us.''

He also believes the Jets' power play needs work after they made good on just one of six chances.

''Well we're not clicking right,'' Maurice said. ''We don't have the zone time and we're kind of out of sorts a little bit. When we get to positions that pucks get knocked down or we're not coming up with it, we're not in a particularly good place to defend it. We're working on it.''

Both teams were playing back-to-back games and lacked zip in the first period but Jets forward Blake Wheeler didn't blame it on fatigue.

''It was right there,'' he said of their chance to win the game. ''The start was good. Through the second period, it was good. We get the power-play goal and we're down by a goal. Puck bounced the wrong way tonight.''

The home crowd's celebration after Perreault's goal was short-lived as Aston-Reese tied it up a few minutes later when, as he was falling to the ice in front of the Winnipeg net, he slipped a loose rebound past Brossoit at 4:09 for his first goal of the season.

Guentzel scored on a power play at 7:50 of the second to give the Penguins the lead and then, just 41 seconds later, a puck bounced behind the net and back out right in front of Lafferty, who slammed it in to make it 3-1.

Scheifele narrowed it by backhanding a rebound past Jarry on a power play at the 10-minute mark but Simon restored the two-goal lead with 3 1/2 minutes left as his shot pinballed through traffic before ending up in the Jets' net. It was also his first of the season.

The Jets seemed to find more steam at the start of the third after coach Paul Maurice made some line changes but couldn't turn things around, striking out on their fourth power play.

Instead, Lafferty scored again at 9:32 when his shot glanced off Winnipeg defenseman Anthony Bittetto's skate. Then Guentzel beat Brossoit for his second of the game and fourth of the season at with 8:20 left to make it 6-2.

Aston-Reese scored his second of the game short-handed on a breakaway just 7 seconds into a Winnipeg power play with 5:14 remaining.

NOTES: Winnipeg finished with a 29-28 advantage on shots on goal. ... The Jets had less trouble on their first meeting this season with the Penguins, walking away from PPG Paints Arena with a 4-1 win last Tuesday. ... Patrik Laine picked up an assist on Scheifele's goal but he couldn't score despite one great chance right in front of Jarry that went high.

Penguins: Host Colorado on Wednesday night.

Stastny gets 2 power-play goals, Vegas beats Kings 5-2
October 13, 2019
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

LOS ANGELES (AP) Paul Stastny scored twice on the power play, Max Pacioretty added a power-play goal and the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Los Angeles Kings 5-2 on Sunday night.

Reilly Smith and Mark Stone also scored, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 36 saves as the Golden Knights swept their first set of back-to-back games.

Vegas was 3 for 3 on the power play after starting the season 3 for 17 with the man-advantage.

Jonathan Quick allowed five goals on 36 shots for the Kings. Quick has allowed 19 goals on 92 shots in his three appearances this season. He has allowed at least five goals in five of his last seven starts.

Stastny redirected Pacioretty's pass between Quick's legs to put the Golden Knights up 3-1 at 14:51 of the second period. He made it 4-1 with a one-timer on a feed from Jonathan Marchessault 2:09 later. It was Stastny's second career game with two power-play goals, and he finished with four points.

Dustin Brown pulled the Kings within 4-2 at 4:24 of the third period, but Stone pushed the lead back to three goals by scoring 17 seconds later.

Vegas went in front 1-0 at 5:42 of the first period on Smith's fourth goal of the season. Smith scored on a wrist shot from the left circle, with William Karlsson providing his sixth assist through five games.

Pacioretty scored on the power play at 6:59 to make it 2-0, scoring from the right dot after being given too much space by the Kings. But Los Angeles cut the deficit to 2-1 on Austin Wagner's first goal of the season 50 seconds later.

NOTES: Fleury played in his 804th game, passing Harry Lumley and moving into 15th place in career appearances by an NHL goalie. ... Vegas coach Gerard Gallant won his 250th NHL game. ... Golden Knights D Shea Theodore had two assists.

UP NEXT

Golden Knights: Host the Nashville Predators on Tuesday to open a two-game homestand.

Tuesday’s 6-pack

Interesting college football games on this week’s card:

— Florida State @ Wake Forest (-2)

— NC State (-2.5) @ Boston College

— Oregon (-3) @ Washington

— Arizona @ USC (-9)

— Florida (-5) @ South Carolina

— Baylor @ Oklahoma State (-3.5)

Quote of the Day
“To achieve great things, two things are needed; a plan, and not quite enough time.”
Leonard Bernstein

Tuesday’s quiz
Where did Aaron Rodgers play his college football?

Monday’s quiz
Luxor is the Las Vegas casino that is shaped like a pyramid.

Sunday’s quiz
Mike Leach was the football coach at Texas Tech before moving to Washington State.

********************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) Watching the Rams’ ugly performance in Sunday’s loss to San Francisco, it dawned on me that I should research how other teams have done the year after losing the Super Bowl.

From 2001-08, only one of eight Super Bowl losers made the playoffs again the next year, but from 2009-18, nine of ten teams did make the playoffs, even going 6-3 SU in their first playoff game that second season. Only one of those teams (NE 2018) got back to the Super Bowl.

We’ve talked a lot here about how competitive the NFL is, and lot of small things have to go in your favor for a team to have success; I’m guessing the schedule makers are also less forgiving to the conference champs. Success is fragile, that much we know.

12) I’ll say this; enjoy success while you can. Detroit Lions won three NFL titles in the 50’s, but have never made it to a Super Bowl, and haven’t won a playoff game since 1991.

11) If I was an NFL coach and my 3rd-string QB was making his first NFL start, I’d want my Hall of Fame QB (who is currently hurt) to go on that road trip, to help mentor the rookie QB.

But Ben Roethlisberger didn’t go to LA this weekend; coach Tomlin simply said “Injured players don’t make road trips”

10) San Diego is the 8th-largest city in America; why did the Chargers leave there? It makes no sense to me; what happens if they don’t sell a decent amount of tickets in the new LA dome next year? Can they go back to San Diego?

Can’t be much fun for the Charger players, when fans at their “home” games are mostly rooting for the other team.

9) Underdogs went 9-3 ATS Sunday; gambling is difficult.

8) Jay Gruden said over the weekend that coaches without final say over his team’s roster have to manage different staff and roster dynamics; “That’s the hardest part of coaching in the National Football League, in my opinion.”

That from a guy who just got fired, so he would know.

7) Back when I was in college 40 or so years ago, I got mononucleosis and was off the grid for 2-3 weeks; can’t remember how much weight I lost, but I do remember that I was 168 scrawny pounds when I went back to school, having probably lost around 20 pounds. Many moons ago, and if you know me, there was no problem regaining all that weight.

Was surprised to read that Sam Darnold only lost three or four pounds during his bout with mono. Protein shakes must do the trick; he played really well against Dallas Sunday.

6) One thing the NFL need to fix is how over-officiated their games are; former refs are TV stars now, pass interference instant replay is a joke (they almost never overturn a PI call/non-call), there is a flag thrown on most every kick return. Stop throwing so many flags!!!!

One thing bugs me a lot; stop calling taunting penalties!!! Or if you call them, just throw a flag, call it on both sides as a warning for guys to STFU, and move on. Coaches will tell guys to shut up and the game can go on. No one pays to watch the officials.

When Carson Wentz blew his knee out two years ago, it happened on a drive that should’ve ended three plays earlier, but the ref called a taunting penalty on a DB after a failed third down play. Eagles would’ve kicked a FG had the taunting penalty not been called, and Wentz wouldn’t have gotten hurt.

5) Quarterbacks and guys who run with/catch the ball get all the credit, but if your offensive line isn’t strong, your offense has no chance, especially if the QB isn’t mobile. When an OL struggles, people are quick to point fingers, but they’re reluctant to give credit in the good times.

4) Couple of quick NFL trends:
— Chiefs covered 11 of their last 13 AFC West road games.
— Last 12 times Tennessee failed to cover consecutive games, they went 11-1 ATS in the third game.

3) NFL TV ratings are up 6% so far this season.

2) Philip Rivers’ career record against the spread:
— As a favorite: 64-71-3
— As an underdog or pick ‘em: 41-31-3

1) Packers 23, Lions 22
— Detroit got inside Packers’ 10-yard line on first three drives, scored 13 points.
— Lions are 2-2-1 despite a +6 turnover ratio.
— Loss ends Detroit’s 4-game series win streak.

— Green Bay won despite a minus-3 turnover ratio (0-3).
— Packers outgained Detroit 447-229, but scored only 13 points on four red zone drives.
— Lions lost despite a 12-yard advantage in field position.

Carolina 5-1-0 past six games overall Arizona Under 4-0 past four games
Colorado 5-0-0 past five games overall Los Angeles Over 5-0 past five games

New Jersey 0-4-2 past six games overall Nashville Over 5-0 past five games

West Coast Fair

The Carolina Hurricanes opened the season with a 5-0-0 record in their first five games for the first time in franchise history. They won their fifth game by a 5-2 score against the New York Islanders this past Friday, but fell 3-2 at home in the second end of a back-to-back against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Now, they'll head out on the road for an early-season west-coast swing.

If you ever wondered why it seems the Hurricanes are always on a lengthy road trip to begin the season, it's due to the North Carolina State Fair. PNC Arena and Carter-Finley Stadium, where N.C. State football plays, are right next to the state fairgrounds. The parking for the state fair uses the lots for Carter-Finley and PNC Arena, so the Hurricanes are on the road in the middle of October every season. They head to Los Angeles on Tuesday, San Jose on Wednesday and Anaheim on Friday before traveling to Columbus on Oct. 24 after six days off. Their next home game isn't until Oct. 26, a matinee battle against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Looking Ahead

Tuesday, Oct. 15

Tampa Bay at Montreal: The Lightning head to Bell Centre as slight road favories. They are ice-cold, going 0-5 over the past five as a road favorite, including a stunning loss at Ottawa over the weekend. The home team has come away with victories in four of the past five meetings in this series, with the 'under' cashing in four of the past five. That's a stark contrast to what's been happening for Montreal overall, as the 'over' is 4-0-1 in their five games overall, including 1-0-1 in two home outings. In fact, the Canadiens are averaging 4.3 goals per game while yielding 4.3 goals per outing.

Arizona at Winnipeg: The Coyotes and Jets meet in Winnipeg. The 'under' has connected in all four games for Arizona so far, as they have scratched out seven goals while allowing a total of seven. Four of the goals scored came in their win against Vegas on Oct. 10, so it's been mostly a power outage for the Coyotes on offense. In their two road games the Coyotes are 0-1-1, losing at Anaheim on Oct. 3 and Colorado on Oct. 12. The Jets started out on the road, splitting four games in the New York City area, and one game at Pittsburgh. They are coming off a 7-2 beatdown at the hands of the Penguins, as G Laurent Brossoit took one for the team. G Connor Hellebuyck will be in between the pipes against the 'Yotes.

Philadelphia at Calgary: The Flyers are on the second of a their three-game western Canada swing after falling 3-2 in Vancouver in a shootout on Saturday. The Flames have yet to hit their stride offensively, scoring three or fewer goals in all six games so far, while coughing up three or more goals in four of their six affairs. They're back home for the first time since Oct. 8, as they look to treat the home fans to a better result than the 4-3 overtime loss they saw against Los Angeles in the Saddledome last time out. The 'over' has connected in five of the past seven meetings in this series.

Wednesday, Oct. 16

Toronto at Washington: The road team has connected in five of the past seven meetings in this series, so Toronto has that going for them. However, they have won just six of the past 20 in this series. Alex Ovechkin and the Caps just seem to have their number, and the favorite has connected in 20 of the past 28 in this series. They might be catching the Capitals in a good spot, however, as they have dropped four of the past five, including two in regulation and two in overtime. The last time out Washington was doubled up by Colorado on Monday by a 6-3 score. The 'over' is 3-1 in the past four for the Caps.

Buffalo at Anaheim: The Sabres head out to 'The Pond' to battle the Ducks. Buffalo will be looking to snap a four-game skid against Pacific Division foes. Anaheim has been solid when favored, winning four in a row. However, facing the Eastern Conference hasn't been kind to them lately, going 6-15 in the past 21. The road team has won five of the past six meetings in this series, too, while the 'dog has barked in four of the past five meetings. That might mean it's a good idea to fade Anaheim, with Buffalo a solid value on the road.

Thursday, Oct. 17

N.Y. Rangers at New Jersey: The Devils are looking to avenge a 6-4 loss in Newark against the Panthers, 6-4. They'll face a familiar foe in the Rangers. The Blueshirts won three of the four regular-season meetings in this series last year, although New Jersey won 4-2 in the last meeting on April 1, no foolin'. The home team has won six of the past seven in this series between NYC Metro rivals. The Rangers have been so-so in their three games to date. However, the power play has been clicking, hitting at a 33.3 percent clip to rank fourth during the early going. The penalty kill ranks 13th at 83.3 percent.

Nashville at Arizona: The Predators skate into the desert to face the Coyotes, and Arizona actually won this season series 2-1 in 2018-19. The Preds avoided the season sweep with a 5-2 win in the Music City last Feb. 5, but Arizona won 3-0 in Nashville on Nov. 29 and 2-1 at home on Nov. 15 in the only meeting in the Valley of the Sun. The Coyotes have actually won five of the past six against the Predators in Glendale dating back to the 2014-15 when the Predators swept the three-game season series. Nashville has struggled early on, ranking 25th on the power play at 16.2 percent while going 18th on the penalty kill at 80.8 percent.
