What to Watch: Rio Olympic Games Day 6.

Day 6 in Rio marks the return of golf to the Olympic Games after a 112-year absense. Watch to see if PGA Tour pros Bubba Watson (USA), Henrik Stenson (SWE) and Rickie Fowler (USA), the top three qualifiers for the Olympics, can carve up Rio's brand new championship course. Also, men's rugby will award gold, silver and bronze in the inaugual Olympic rugby sevens competition.

Across town, Simone Biles is expected to compete for her first individual Olympic medal in the women's all-around competition, while Kayla Harrison hopes to repeat her gold-medal-winning experience from London for the U.S. in judo. Swimming fans will look forward to the final of the men's 200m individual medley, where Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte could go head-to-head one last time, after Phelps edged out Lochte for gold at the last Olympic Games.

Nathan Adrian misses defending 100m freestyle gold, grabs bronze.

Teenager Kyle Chalmers of Australia captured Olympic gold in the 100m freestyle, one of the premier events on the Olympic calendar, in a time of 47.58 on Wednesday night. It's the first Australian gold in this event since Michael Wenden in Mexico City in 1968.
Belgium’s Pieter Timmers took the silver in 47.80 while defending Olympic champion Nathan Adrian was 0.05 seconds back to earn the bronze. Chalmers, 18, was well back at the turn but charged home over the final 50m to take the gold.

"I was next to a couple of guys who come home really fast. In a pool this small, there’s no getting away from that," Adrian told media after the race. "I feel great about getting another medal, man. No doubt. To be able to look at the side of the block and see that there’s lights there. It’s what you work for. It would be great to have gold, but in this day and age in the 100m freestyle’s maybe the most fickle event out there."

The world record, 46.91, was set at the 2009 World Championships at the height of the now-illegal rubberized supersuit era by Brazil’s Cesar Cielo; he did not qualify to race in front of a home crowd in any event at the 2016 Olympics.
Fellow American Caeleb Dressel – whose parents and family made it down to Rio thanks to a secret, surprise GoFundMe campaign set up by the Dressel's siblings – finished sixth at 48.02. Dressel was part of the 4x100m freestyle relay that won gold alongside Michael Phelps, Adrian and Ryan Held.

Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte in league of their own after 200m individual medley semifinal.

Michael Phelps won his 21st career Olympic gold medal on Tuesday night, aided by Ryan Lochte in the 4x200m freestyle relay. By also winning gold, Lochte became the second most-decorated male Olympic swimmer of all-time.
But Wednesday, it was all about individual credentials at stake. Phelps and Lochte went head-to-head in their 200m individual medley semifinal.
Phelps came away with the victory, clocking one minute, 55.78 seconds to post the fastest time across both semifinals. Lochte raced to 1:56.28.

Both men will advance to Thursday night’s final, about a second ahead of the rest of the field. Joining them in the final will be Brazil’s Thiago Pereira, who won a silver medal in the 400m IM at the 2012 London Olympics and 400m IM gold medalist Kosuke Hagino of Japan.
"The history him and I have had with one another is something special and something I’ve never had with another competitor of mine," Lochte said of Phelps after the semifinal. "We’ve been racing for the last 12 years and having one more battle tomorrow. It will be fun. I consider that Ryan and I have probably grown closer together as friends this year than we have in the past. We have one more time to hop in the pool and duke it out."

Kerri Walsh Jennings, April Ross advance to the Round of 16.

CplENxvUkAE1xBR.jpg

Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross beat Switzerland's Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Verge-Depre 21-13, 22-24, 15-12 to win their pool and advance to the Round of 16.
The U.S. women appeared dominant in the first set but the Swiss rallied back in the second. The teams tied at 4-4. Switzerland took the lead at 5-4 after a successful block against April Ross. The point lead switched again in the U.S. women's favor after a successful block by Ross. Forrer/Verge-Depre took a single point lead going 11-10 into the first technical timeout of the second set. The Swiss managed to pull away to win the second set 24-22, forcing a decisive third set. The loss marked Walsh Jennings' second dropped set of her Olympic career.

Forrer/Verge-Depre led into the third set but Walsh Jennings/Ross responded to tie at 4-4. A long serve from Ross gave the Swiss a one-point lead and a cutshot that Ross was unable to save put the score at 6-4 in Forrer/Verge-Depre's favor. A successful block from Walsh Jennings tied the score again at 6-6. The U.S. took the lead at 8-7 . After a hard line shot from the Swiss, followed by an ace, Forrer/Verge-Depre took the lead at 9-8. After a medical timeout, the U.S. women bounced back, tying at 10-10 before pulling away for the win.
The U.S. women will automatically advance to the Round of 16 while the Swiss women will have to wait for pool play to end to find out if they qualify for a last chance lucky loser match. Walsh Jennings/Ross went 3-0 in group play, beating out Australia, China and Switzerland.

The elimination round will begin Aug. 12 at 10 a.m. ET.
