Tonight.

Swimming

9:00 pm ET

Day 5 Evening Session

Women’s 100m freestyle semifinals
Men’s 100m freestyle final
Men’s 200m individual medley semifinals
Women’s 4x200m freestyle final

U.S. sprinter Nathan Adrian won gold in London in the 100m freestyle by just 0.01 seconds, relegating Australia’s James Magnussen to silver. Magnussen didn’t qualify for the Rio 100m free, but that won’t make Adrian’s defense any easier with Aussie Cam McEvoy in the field. Also, the U.S. women led by Katie Ledecky and Missy Franklin look to keep the streak alive in the 4x200m freestyle relay, where the U.S. has topped the podium at every Olympics since Barcelona ’92.

The U.S. Women's Field Hockey Team Is Headed To The Olympic Quarterfinals.

CpiEE2XUEAAHqgv.jpg

The United States women's field hockey team advanced to the Olympic quarterfinals after defeating Japan 6-1. Melissa Gonzalez scored on a penalty corner 21 seconds into the match to set the tone on a rainy Wednesday evening. Katie Bam scored the first of her three goals four minutes later.

Katie Reinprecht scored late in the second period to make it 3-0 at halftime. Jill Witmer scored for the United States in the third period, and Bam scored twice in the fourth.
The Americans improved to 3-0 and moved to the top of Pool B by moving ahead of Britain in goal differential.

The United States will face India on Thursday and will close pool play with a showdown against Britain on Saturday.

Brooks, Mikulak Unable To Find Olympic Podium In All-Around Battle.

CpiBVnlVYAAmd_N.jpg

RIO DE JANEIRO – Sam Mikulak and Chris Brooks came to Rio to win an Olympic medal, but as one of the fiercest individual men’s all-around battles raged inside Rio Olympic Arena, the two Americans put out their best gymnastics and it just wasn’t enough.
Brooks peaked as high as fifth after four rotations but finished in 14th, while Mikulak surged to a seventh-place finish having at one point been in 19th. The Americans were unable to win a second consecutive all-around medal for Team USA four years after Danell Leyva left the London Games with bronze.

Reigning Olympic all-around champion Kohei Uchimura surged back in a dramatic finish for the top spot, the six-time world champion overcoming Ukraine’s Oleg Verniaiev in the last event, edging him out 92.365 to 92.266. Max Whitlock of Great Britain won the bronze.
Uchimura becomes the first man to repeat as Olympic champion since Sawao Kato, his Japanese countryman, in 1968 and 1972.
It was a steady day for the Americans, who bookended the competition with their weakest event, the pommel horse.

Mikulak started there with a 14.600, while Brooks was forced to finish there, struggling on the handstand of his dismount and scoring a 13.200.
Paul Hamm is the only American man to win the all-around title at the Olympics, having done so in 2004.
That was not in the cards for Mikulak, who had talked of gold medal dreams at Olympic Trials in St. Louis in June, or for Brooks, a 29-year-old who was the people’s choice to make this team having had a career of ups and downs and well-documented challenges.

But the highlights were many for them on an Olympic final day, neither of them making any major mistakes or falling off an apparatus, both of them firing themselves up after particularly strong routines with fist pumps, cries of “Come on!” and points to the American contingent in the crowd, which brought out chants of “U-S-A! U-S-A!” during the competition.

It is the end of the Olympic road for Brooks, while Mikulak will compete in both the floor and high bar finals in the coming days.

The U.S. women's volleyball team became the first team at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games to clinch a spot in the quarterfinal round when it beat Serbia 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-18, 25-19). It was a showdown of the only two remaining unbeaten teams in Pool B; the U.S. improved to 3-0 with the win.
Rachael Adams paced Team USA's efforts with 18 points, including four service aces. Foluke Akinradewo added 16 points with four blocks, and Kim Hill and Jordan Larson contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.

After splitting the first two sets, Hill broke an 8-8 tie in the third set to give the U.S. a lead it would never relinquish. Akinradewo finished off the set scoring four of the final five points. In the fourth set, the U.S. burst out to a 16-10 lead on two opponent errors and an ace by Adams, and the U.S. would go on to win the set by that same margin.

Team USA sits atop Pool B standings and will next play Italy on Aug. 12 at 3 p.m. before wrapping up group play against China on Aug. 14.

U.S. Men's Water Polo Team Takes First Win At 2016 Olympics With 6-3 Victory Over France.

Cph5gC2VYAAOPF3.jpg

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - August 10 - The U.S. Olympic Men's Water Polo Team turned to their defense to earn their first win at the 2016 Olympic Games as they stopped France today 6-3. Josh Samuels (Villa Park, CA/UCLA/NYAC) scored three goals to lead the offense but it was the defense anchored by McQuin Baron's (North Tustin, CA/USC/Regency) 11 saves that set the tone. Team USA held France scoreless for the entire second and third quarter on the way to the win. The United States returns to play on Friday when they meet Montenegro in the second to last group play match at 11:40am/10:40am et/7:40am pt. The match will stream live on NBCOlympics.com and air on NBC at 10:40am et/10:40am pt.

The match started quietly on both sides until France broke through with the first goal of the match at the 2:03 mark on a tally from Mathieu Peisson. John Mann (Newport Beach, CA/California/NYAC) brought the match level with 1:19 to play on a power play goal in close. Tied 1-1 after the first quarter, Team USA broke things open in the second. Jesse Smith (Coronado, CA/Pepperdine/NYAC) hit on a power play with 6:31 to play to give the United States their first lead of the match at 2-1.

Samuels followed with a counter attack goal to make it 3-1 and then found Luca Cupido (Newport Beach, CA/California/Newport WPC) for a redirect and a 4-1 lead. With just 12 seconds to play in the half, Samuels closed the scoring with a penalty putting Team USA up 5-1 at the break.Neither side would find the net in the third quarter as the United States maintained their four goal advantage. The scoreless drought continued until 3:30 remaining in the game when Samuels added his third for a 6-1 lead. France looked to stage a comeback but only mustered two more goals as Team USA earned the 6-3 victory.
The United States went 3/8 on power plays and 1/1 on penalty shots while France was 0/7 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty shot.
Team USA is now 1-2-0 in Group B action with two more games to play in pool play against Montenegro and Italy. Only the top four teams in each six team group will advance to the quarterfinals.

Quotes
Tony Azevedo - "In 2012 we were were 3-0 and and all of the sudden we fell apart. It was a good two wake up calls for us, today we came out with a win but a solid win. Offensively we weren't there but we did our strength which is defnese, counter attack, we stayed united and played as a team. That's what I wanted and what the team wanted and that's gonna get us going to the next game"
Josh Samuels - "I think the energy (on defense was the difference), that was our focus, that was part of our gameplan, the last two games our energy was not all the way up. Today we focused on field blocking, counter attack and it put some pressure on them."
