Switzerland's Fabian Cancellara wins the men's time trial with Tour de France champ Chris Froome third. Cancellara was second oldest rider in the race. at age 35. Throw in Kristin Armstrong's gold at age 42 in the women's race and it was a good day for older riders.
Michael Phelps will swim the heats and semifinals of the 200 IM, which Phelps has won at the past three Olympics. Katie Ledecky is expected to anchor the 4x200m free relay, which the U.S. has won at four of five Olympics.
Having already won gold in the 100 backstroke American Ryan Murphy has his sights set on doubling up with the 200 back. Murphy (1:56.29) swam the fourth-fastest time in Wednesday afternoon's preliminary heats of the event. Teammate Jacob Pebley (1:56.44) was fifth. Semifinals are scheduled for Wednesday night. Russian Evgeny Rylov had the top prelim time, 1:55.02.
