Why does Michael Phelps have purple spots on his back?

CpWAnsdUIAAAYI7.jpg

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — After the American men's 4x100-meter relay team won gold, Michael Phelps reached down to help anchorman Nathan Adrian out of the pool.
While he did it, millions of Americans watching at home saw several purple dots on his back and shoulder.
Some kind of new tattoo? Did he take a nap on a bed of tennis balls?

No, the circles are the result of cupping, a therapy technique that athletes use to help their muscles recover and perform at their best. It involves a therapist heating small glass cups, then placing them on the skin and pulling them from the body to loosen and relax the muscles.

Some experts are skeptical of the treatment's effectiveness, but Phelps has been using it regularly for a while. And the 31-year-old, swimming in his fifth Olympics, delivered on Sunday night.
With infant son Boomer watching from the second deck, the American superstar summoned a performance for the ages to propel Team USA to gold — the 19th of Phelps' career.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- The United States claimed its second straight win against a top-three team in women's field hockey, beating No. 3 Australia 2-1 on Monday.
Michelle Vittese and Caitlin van Sickle scored for the Americans, who defeated No. 2 Argentina 2-1 in their Olympic opener on Saturday.
United States goalie Jackie Briggs had six saves and had four saves on the four penalty corners she faced. The crowd chanted, "Jackie! Jackie!" after the match.

The fifth-ranked Americans, who lead Pool B with six points, moved closer to qualifying for the quarterfinals. The top four teams in each six-team pool advance.
The Americans dealt a major blow to Australia. The Hockeyroos dropped their opener to Britain 2-1 on Saturday and now have no points with three pool play matches remaining.

American fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad is out in the quarterfinal round of women's sabre fencing after France's Cecelia Berder rallied for a 15-12 win Monday in Rio. Muhammad, the first US Olympian to compete in a hijab, still has the team competition left later his week. Midway through the match she seemed to have an issue with the scoring, which is always highly subjective, #rio2016.

At the peak of Corcovado Mountain Christ the Redeemer stands watch. The 38 metre tall Art Deco masterpiece with a wingspan of nearly 20 metres was proposed by the Catholic Church in 1922, began being built in 1926 and was then finished in 1931.

In the background is the continent’s most revered football stadium – the Maracana – the home of two World Cup Finals.

Rio de Janeiro celebrated its 450[SUP]th[/SUP] anniversary in 2015 having been founded by Portuguese explorer Estacio de Sa in 1565, when he first set foot onto Brazil here:

and closing ceremonies and the football finals where the host nation will be chasing a fairy-tale finish which the Womens Soccer Team is handling well so far unlike the Brazilian Mens Soccer Team which has played to 2 (Two) 0-0 Draws, failing to score even one goal yet with one of those 0-0 Draws coming vs. South Africa (Iran the other one, Iran is pretty decent at Soccer) and continuing their latest run of playing well below expectations.

Which extends back to at least the last World Cup.

This level of Mens Soccer Ineptitude is not a thing that Brazilians are familiar with, welcome or want to have continue and especially not on Home Soil with the entire world watching
