Cooking Lentils

You’ll need 1 cup of dried lentils, 1 ½ cups of water or broth/stock, an onion, garlic, herbs (optional), salt, and a cooking pot.
  1. Pour 1 ½ cups of water or broth into a pot and boil it in medium to high heat.
  2. Add the cup of lentils when the water boils. You may add onions, garlic cloves, and fresh herbs if you like. Do not add salt while cooking, as this tends to harden the lentils. Any acidic ingredients like lemon juice, vinegar or tomatoes must also be added after cooking.
  3. Boil in medium to high heat for 3-5 minutes then reduce to a simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  4. The cooking time for lentils varies depending on the type. To make sure that you do not overcook the lentils, start tasting after 15-20 minutes. It should be tender but not mushy. Cook for another 5 minutes if you want it to be a bit more tender.
  5. Plate and serve. Enjoy!
Tips in Cooking Lentils

  • Older types of lentils will cook for a longer period of time than fresher ones. If buying ones which are packed, check any the cooking instructions included with it.
  • The ratio for cooking lentils is 1 ½ cup liquid per 1 cup lentils. Adding too much liquid will result in a soggy dish.
  • You may use any kind of broth/stock you want - vegetable, chicken, or beef stock.
  • There are different types of lentils, with different cooking times. Make sure that when you cook lentils, you do not cook different types in one pot
Says each dif type of lentil varies the cooking time.

what a bunch of fucken bull shit. typical as to why your sinking fast. total racist and didnt do a lick of real work in all the years she collected a large check, now she's just looking for much more free money for NO Fucken work. lazy bitch

WASHINGTON -- The woman who was forced to quit the Agriculture Department after a video misrepresented her message on discrimination has refused an offer to return to work at the USDA, saying she needs a break.

Shirley Sherrod, who was at the center of a firestorm over a tape that was edited to suggest that she had once declined to assist a farmer because he was white, may take a consulting job with the Agriculture Department when recommendations on how to encourage outreach and advocacy at USDA are complete.

Sherrod said she was tempted to take the offer in the civil rights office but ultimately declined.

"I've enjoyed my work at the USDA. I did enjoy that work and want to see that work continue. I just don't think at this point I can do this," she said.

"It doesn't mean I'm not interested in that work, because I certainly am. I was working on many of those issues before coming to work in government," she said, adding that she hopes to work on many of these issues in the future.

Sherrod had been the Georgia state director for rural development, having been a longtime organizer of a farm cooperative.

"That doesn't fit what she needs, what she wants and what she deserves," Vilsack said.

Noting that she hopes new systems will reduce instances of discrimination, Sherrod said, "I don't want to be the one to test it."

Vilsack said he takes complete responsibility for forcing Sherrod to resign in the hours after a tape of her addressing a Georgia NAACP Freedom Fund banquet was released by conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart. But he denied that he spoke to anyone at the White House before his aide, Deputy Undersecretary Cheryl Cook, told Sherrod to hand in her resignation.

"I disappointed the president, I disappointed this administration, I disappointed the country, I disappointed Shirley. I have to live with that," Vilsack said.

"Her comments were taken totally and completely out of context ... and the main message was entirely consistent with what we're trying to do," he said.

Nobody has the balls to hold her accountable, just sweep it underneath the carpet and hope it goes away.
