NLDS Game 5 Betting Preview: Dodgers at Nationals by covers

Los Angeles Dodgers at Washington Nationals (-155, 7)

Series tied 2-2

Max Scherzer has problems keeping the ball inside the ballpark and the Washington Nationals are hoping that won't be an issue in Thursday's decisive Game 5 of the National League Division Series against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers. Scherzer served up a career-worst 31 homers in the regular season and was taken deep by Corey Seager and Justin Turner in Los Angeles' 4-3 victory in Game 1.

Scherzer is aware the Nationals have never won a playoff series since relocating from Montreal and he didn't sidestep away from the importance. "This will probably be the biggest start of my career," Scherzer told reporters. "I've said that a few times in my life, but I think this will be it. You're going to get the absolute best out of everybody on both teams." The Dodgers are looking to reach the NL Championship Series for the second time in four seasons and are expected to turn to veteran left-hander Rich Hill. Los Angeles first baseman Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run shot in Tuesday's 6-5 victory - his only homer and RBIs in the series.

TV: 8:08 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

WEATHER REPORT: Conditions at Nationals Park will be clear and cool (game-time temperatures in the low 60's). There is a 10 percent chance of a shower rolling through early in the evening and the humidity level will be at 80 percent.

WHAT SHARPS SAY: "The Dodgers used their ace, Clayton Kershaw, on just three days rest in Game 4. Now Los Angeles will have to use Rich Hill on three days rest in Game 5. Meanwhile, the Nationals saved their ace Max Scherzer for Game 5 which means he is pitching on five days of rest. While Scherzer will be fresh, the Dodgers have been a much stronger offensive team versus right-handed pitchers this season, averaging 5.0 runs per nine innings with a .261 batting average, compared to just 3.5 runs and .210 versus LHP."

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Rich Hill (12-5, 2.12 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Max Scherzer (20-7, 2.96)

Hill is expected to start the contest but manager Dave Roberts asserted that 20-year-old rookie Julio Urias is also part of the Game 5 pitching plan. "I think that we talked about Rich as an option, obviously, but so is Julio and how we want to strategize to win Game 5," Roberts said at a press conference. "We're going to talk through it but it's nice now that we didn't have to go to Julio (in Game 4), so he's certainly an option." Hill lasted just 4 1/3 innings while losing Game 2, and he gave up four runs and six hits while striking out seven.

Scherzer allowed four runs and five hits in six innings while losing against Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw in Game 1. The NL Cy Young award candidate expects another raucous atmosphere with the NLCS berth awaiting the winner. "If it's anything like Game 1, it's going to be such a thrill," Scherzer said. "Game 1 was unbelievable there in D.C. The fans were just going nuts from the first pitch. So the fact that it's going to be Game 5, I mean, our fans really brought it in Game 1, so I can only imagine the atmosphere going into Game 5."

TRENDS:

* Dodgers are 2-8 in their last 10 playoff road games.
* Dodgers are 0-4 in Hill's last 4 starts.
* Nationals are 6-0 in their last 6 games following a loss.
* Nationals are 5-0 in Scherzer's last 5 starts following a team loss in their previous game.
* Under is 5-1-1 in Hill's last 7 starts overall.
* Over is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings.
* Over is 8-2 in Kellogg's last 10 games behind home plate.

TONIGHT'S MEMBERS REPORT

Here we go my friends.....

5k LA Dodgers +123

7k LA Dodgers +1.5 -178

7k LA Dodgers Over 7 +113

Despite the Dodgers starting Rich Hill on short rest, my simulations have L.A. winning this decisive game and , making the +123 an automatic take. Max Scherzer is far from unhittable in the postseason (3.93 ERA) and the Nationals, who have never won a playoff series, should not be favored by this much.

Friday MLB Power Baseball Results (0-2) -$10,500

MLB Playoffs (18-11) 62% +$42,550

Here are my results my friends....

5k Toronto
+126 (Lost 1-2)

Kluber conceded seven runs in ten innings against Toronto this season, and he now owns a weak 5.34 ERA in his career against the Blue Jays, so I would not feel comfortable siding with him. Plus, the Blue Jays trio of Donaldson, Bautista and Encarnacion are hitting a combined .300 with 11 RBI’s in 40 at bats against Kluber, so I am confident they can push across some runs. Also, Estrada has been incredible as of late, conceding only three runs over his last 27.1 innings pitched, and he is very difficult pitcher to hit when he is in a groove like this, and overall this Blue Jays team seems to have the Postseason magic and I am confident they take game one.

5k Toronto Over
7.5 -110 (Lost 3 Runs)

Game 1 of the ALCS pits Cleveland's Corey Kluber against Toronto's Marco Estrada. While Kluber threw seven shutout innings against Boston last round and Estrada also shined, allowing one run over 8 1/3 innings vs. Texas, my simulations show this total to be too low. The Over is 6-2-1 in the Indians' last nine games against right-handed starters.

Saturday MLB Power Baseball Results (2-2) -2,400 . MLB Playoffs (20-13) 60% +$40,150

Cubs destroy the Dodgers and my hope for the UNDER was lost as the home run derby goes off in the late innings.... see you all Sunday my friends....

5k Toronto -123 (Lost 1-2)

3k Toronto Under
8.5 +100 (Blowout Winner 3 Runs)

I can’t trust Tomlin against a team he has had some trouble against throughout his career and this season, posting a weak 5.53 ERA in 27.2 innings career innings pitched. Happ on the other hand has been outstanding against the Indians, posting a solid 2.86 career ERA in 28.1 innings of work. The Indians lineup is only hitting a combined .232 with zero homers and six RBI’s in 112 at bats against Happ, so he should be effective again in this match up. I can’t see the Blue Jays bats silenced again in this one and they should get the win and send the series back to Toronto tied one game apiece.

5k Chicago Under 7.5 +102 (Winner 12 Runs)

5k Chicago -1.5
+115 (Easy Blowout Winner 8-4)

Los Angeles was dreadful against left-handed pitching this season, hitting a collective .214 as a team. While Lester is the lone lefty starter in the Cubs rotation, he’s starting this one. Joe Maddon has quality lefties in the bullpen that he can go to in Mike Montgomery, Travis Wood and the fireball throwing Chapman. Kenley Jansen, the good Dodgers closer, likely won’t be available for this one after throwing a career high 51 pitches in 2.1 innings in Game 5 against Washington. Maeda struggled down the stretch and that continued in his Game 3 start against Washington. Playing at home with a dominant lefty on the mound, gives the Cubs the edge in the opener. The Cubs have stayed Under the total in 10 of his last 11 starts and they've won 13 of his last 15. I don't expect the Dodgers to score much against Lester. Let's go with the Game staying Under.

Sunday MLB Playoff Baseball (1-1) +$0 . MLB Playoffs (21-14) 60% +$40,150

No money won, no money lost......

7k Chicago +113 (Lost 1-0)

7k Chicago +1.5 -155 (Winner 0-1)

Kershaw is tremendous and is an elite pitcher arguably in a class of his own. He’s also thrown a ton of pitches in the divisional round and missed two months with a back issue. Factor in his less than stellar postseason record and it makes things a little more even. Hendricks was terrific at Wrigley Field this season and established himself as a dark horse Cy Young candidate. The Cubs have a deep lineup and they have plenty of lefty arms to use out of the bullpen to negate the Dodgers’ advantage in platoon situations. It’s close, but the Cubs have enough to get the win here, especially if Kershaw has his outing shortened by long at-bats.

Chicago is:

Cubs are 4-1 in their last 5 vs. National League West
Cubs are 4-1 in their last 5 vs. a team with a winning record
Cubs are 4-1 in their last 5 Sunday games

Los Angeles is:
Dodgers are 2-7 in their last 9 League Championship games
Dodgers are 1-4 in their last 5 Sunday games
Dodgers are 0-8 in their last 8 League Championship road games

THIS WAS MONDAY'S REPORT:

Monday October 17th MLB Playoff Baseball . MLB Playoffs (21-14) 60% +$40,150

You all know I don't like to give out big favorites and tonight I'm going to break that rule! Here we go my friends....

7k Toronto Over 8.5 -105

Indians starter Trevor Bauer will be trying to overcome a non-baseball injury on his throwing hand, and he was tagged for three earned runs on six hits in his only other postseason start. Marcus Stroman has been inconsistent for Toronto, and has a 4.59 ERA at home this year. Look for the lineups to get going in Game 3 and send the score Over the posted total.

7k Toronto -167

7k Toronto -1.5 +118

Bauer has had some trouble with the Blue Jays, conceding 13 runs in 18.2 career innings against Toronto throughout his career, so I expect the Blue Jays to come out swinging and get some early runs against him. Also, Stroman has looked great against the Indians, allowing only two runs in 14 innings pitched against them this season. Plus, the Indians lineup has only driven in a combined three runs with zero homers in 78 at bats against Stroman, so I am confident he can limit the Indians offense. This series is far from over, the Blue Jays are back at home, and I am confident they can deliver with a big win. I would even consider taking the Blue Jays on the run line (-1.5) to get more value as I think their offense will break out in this contest.

Toronto is:
5-1 in their last 6 Postseason home games.

4-1 in Stroman’s last 5 home starts against a team with a winning record.

5-1 in Stroman’s last 6 starts after the Blue Jays allow two runs or less in their previous game.
