No way you DQ the #1 seed, one of the biggest name in tennis, over this...

It is all PC - Me Too - liberal bullshit, the gal over acted and they were afraid of the lefty feminists swarming on the situation, protests, social media, interviews...

For the best. It would have been a fake major because Federer and Nadal refused to play. Now one of the young guys can get a hollow major as none of the big 3 really had a say tennis wise.

+1 our society has become totally devoid of common sense and understanding of atypical situations and the ability to adapt to them. this was a pathetically inept decision.

I disagree, tennis his been following the rules in instances like this for decades. They booted John McEnroe from a major for swearing 30 years ago.

[ I do agree though that are society has become pussified, I just don't think this is a good example of it ]

Mcenroes act was intentional but this act was accidental. major difference, in my opinion.

True... but the rule doesn't differentiate between intention and non-intention. This instance was pretty clear that Novak didn't mean to do it, because he wasn't even looking
in that direction, but I can see cases where it's not really clear if it is intentional or not. What do you do in that case? It's a tough situation, and tragic for Novak,
but he's a seasoned pro, he should have known better.

Its too bad as i was watching when it happened and his reaction right away was "oh shit, i'm so sorry" and it looked like he meant it. He didnt do any intentional harm.

The DQ thing sucked but the ATP had to set a precedent

Sucks

If it missed her, he's probably not disqualified.

Also if the woman didn't overreact, he might not be disqualified too. So they're essentially conceding that whether someone is or is not disqualified depends on bad luck of it hitting them, and also of them being weak and acting like they've been shot by a sniper.

No one said it is how someone should behave. Still makes a mockery of the event to actually disqualify someone for it.

:>(
It would probably hurt(for a minute or two) anyone coming in that fast including you
No one would expect it to be hit right in the epiglottis and the thyroid cartilage which both are connected to your trachea
She did overreact but then again it probably hurt

Such BS. If it was a male nothing would have happened at all, she freaked out. She should never be close to any sporting events ffs, what do you expect. Imagine if it was a black female BLM would be protesting the rest of the matches..haha

It's in the rulebook, you can't recklessly drill the ball at the line judge, even if you're not meaning to hit them.

Agree. That decision was cut and dry and the correct one. It has nothing to do with politics. And he should have been disqualified whether he hit someone or not. You don't do that and he needs to take personal responsibility for his actions. Here's a thought...control your temper.

Fined $267k and lost all ranking points gained in the tournament.

I would have to take a look but i don't think that will affect his #1 ranking since Nadal obviously decided not to play the US Open. I don't think anyone else could catch him.

“This whole situation has left me really sad and empty. I checked on the lines person and the tournament told me that thank God she is feeling OK,” he wrote. “I’m extremely sorry to have caused her such stress. So unintended. So wrong. … As for the disqualification, I need to go back within and work on my disappointment and turn this all into a lesson for my growth and evolution as a player and human being. I apologise to the @usopen tournament and everyone associated for my behaviour.”
