ya much less than orginally anticipated...figure around 8million going into friday...the pinny # looks like a dead under....the wwts is up for debate...really need to see this movie do around 6.5-7m on friday to have any shot...thats a 45-55% increase over wednesdays opener...

lots of unknowns...did many know it even opened on wednesday....yahoo reviews been solid with B+ average...hopefully those who saw it spread the word...Im gonna need solid WOM to hit my over at wwts i know that much....this doesnt strike me as the type of movie people rush out to see...hopefully thats going for me as well...

really have no clue right as other than the hollywood will win and the pinny under will most likely win...

wsexs number will be very interesting. its pretty safe to say anyone who had the 3-day under at 28.5 or 27.5 has won. Could wtcs dissapointing performance potentially help the other openers, or is this apples and oranges?

well some good news for us OVER bettors is WTC got bumped to 2957 from 2803 an increase of 154 theatres...ill take what i can get at this point and i was hoping for a bump...that and ive been watching the football game on fox and ive seen some commercials for WTC...nice eye opener for the 20/30/40's year olds who are sitting home watching it...

World Trade Center (Paramount) / 2,957

i got this off a board....just one persons opinion

If you look at the slaes for yesterday, East Coast was Strong while the south and part of the central are was below average. West Coast sales were average per NF. I think this is a hard film to call at this point. Anything could happen. Weekend could see average sales or jump up. So far it's getting good WOM and paramount ( I think it's them) said today higher than expected numbers of people walking out of the film say they will recommend it to someone. Good signs so far.

need 6763K per to hit the 20million...thats only 350 more than Flight93...if this movie cant do those type of #'s with the names its got backing it...with the good reviews and the heroic tale...and the lack of direct competition for the genre...than i guess i dont deserve to win....

Terror Plot Could Affect New Stone Film
By GARY GENTILE
AP
LOS ANGELES (Aug. 10) - Following the news early Thursday of a terrorist plot to blow up in-flight passenger airplanes, executives at Paramount Pictures considered scaling back advertising for the new Oliver Stone film, "World Trade Center," which opened nationwide Wednesday.

Ultimately, with executives and other analysts unable to predict how moviegoers, unsettled by the news events, will be affected, the studio decided not to change its in-place marketing plans.

"The events of yesterday and today make this story even more poignant," Don Harris, executive vice president of distribution at Paramount, a unit of Viacom Inc., said Thursday. "But I don't know whether it helps or hurts."

Stone's film recounts the harrowing tale of two Port Authority police officers caught under the rubble of the twin towers, which fell after being hit by two passenger planes on Sept. 11, 2001.

The film earned $4.4 million at the box office Wednesday, exceeding Paramount's expectations for the emotionally charged film.

Box office analysts say the current news events could raise awareness of the film, which could boost ticket sales.

"`World Trade Center' was never designed to be escapist entertainment anyway, so I'm not sure people will shy away from it given these real-life events," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations. "How much more relevant could this movie be right now?"

But the film's subject matter might not be the only thing on moviegoers' minds. In the days after the Sept. 11 attacks, out of concern for their safety, people stayed away from large public gatherings. Box-office receipts did pick up in subsequent weekends.

With the federal government raising the threat level and continued focus on the plot by news shows, people could again decide to stick close to home this weekend.

"I give the audience a lot of credit," Dergarabedian said. "By and large we still feel very safe on our own soil going to the movie theater."

Wednesday's audience for the film, which stars Nicolas Cage , was evenly split among men and women, young and old, Paramount said. A higher-than-normal percentage of moviegoers told exit-poll researchers they would recommend the film to friends.

"It performed significantly ahead of our expectations," Harris said.

Par strikes terror at B.O.

Will recent events ward off auds?

By BEN FRITZ

As if opening a movie about 9/11 just a month before its fifth anniversary isn't tricky enough, Paramount, which bowed "World Trade Center" on Wednesday, now faces the dicey dilemma of a real terrorist situation.

Of course, no one knows whether public concern about the foiled plot to blow up airplanes flying between the U.K. and U.S. will affect auds' willingness to see the Oliver Stone-helmed film, which Par has been marketing with an extremely sensitive touch.

In an unprecedented move for a serious drama, Par opened "WTC" on Wednesday and did $4.4 million. While that's low for a Wednesday bow, there really aren't any comparable films, since virtually all other Wednesday openers have been tentpoles or came before a holiday frame.

But based on solid tracking and the Wednesday perf, most expect the pic, which is playing 2,957 theaters, to cume high 20s or low 30s by Sunday. It will likely come in No. 2 for the weekend behind the second frame of "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby."

"This movie's performance is about the long haul and how many people will tell their friends they have to go see it," Rob Moore, Par prexy of distribution, marketing and operations, said of the decision to open the pic on a Wednesday. "That's why we wanted to get people talking about it early, even if it means we took some money out of the weekend."

He noted that, per tracking, 80% of opening-night auds said they would "definitely recommend" the pic, which Paramount is hoping will translate into a long run at the B.O.

Surprisingly, 60% were female and 40% were under 25. Moore noted that teenage girls turned out particularly well, nearly matching the number of men over 25.

By contrast, Universal's 9/11 pic "United 93" drew an overwhelmingly adult aud that was almost evenly split between genders. "World Trade Center" is generating about twice as much interest in pre-release tracking as "United 93," which bowed to $11.5 million.

Among other openers, Disney's dance drama "Step Up" is tracking best, almost entirely on the strength of teen girls. Pic opens at 2,467 playdates and should gross low or mid-teens.

Sony and Revolution's family superhero comedy "Zoom," which bows at 2,501, is tracking poorly and looks unlikely to even break into the teens.

The Weinstein Co. is hoping that horror pic "Pulse," which is going out under the Dimension label, will break out beyond the core young male aud showing up in tracking. Pic opens at 2,323 and will likely do high single digits or low teens.

"Talladega Nights" barely beat "World Trade Center" on Wednesday, grossing $4.5 million, and should drop about 50% this weekend, putting it around $24 million. That makes the comedy the presumptive No. 1 unless "World Trade Center" does particularly well.
