First, I think 'take over the world' may be a little dramatic at this point, although you can't really argue that the US completely dominates in almost every arena: military, economy, cultural influence, non-governmental institutions, etc. Countries who are not likely targets for military aggression will instead be pressured into economic and cultural submission. [Also, I think their 'domination' began at the end of WWII, or the day the first bomb was dropped in Japan. It was a matter of ending the reign of the Soviets that may have prevented a 'takeover' from happening sooner.]
Maybe looking at the situation through Canadian eyes has me paranoid, but I just don't know how anyone could realistically deny that the US forges controller/controllee relationships with even its closest allies. Frankly, I'm surprised that you are shocked by my initial claim.
