J, I don't disagree, nor am I unaware of how even incremental increases in price will have an unbeatable ripple effect on all our economy.
I just believe the negative ripples will be shortlived.
Now let me clarify. "Short-lived" in the context of our country's entire history.
I bet it takes a good 2-5 years before we see significant gains being produced by Americans moving away from a petroleum based society to that of an alternative. And that's just seeing the initial gains. Those will be occurring even as many of the negative ripples are still prominent and even as many aspects of our world seem to be 'suffering' while the much needed paradigm shift begins rolling inexorably forward.
Then in years 5-10 more advantages to the alternatives bear fruit and the negative ripples effect continues to dilute as smart American (and other countries as well) know-how leads us to embrace the smarter alternatives while also finding ways to continue benefitting from petroleum, even as it is costing 2-3 times what we currently view as "high".
In years 11-20, the shift will gain huge momementum as more and more creativity helps not only the U.S. but also the rest of the world move away from a petroleum based society to a WIDE range of alternatives.
Evolution is not without it's painful aspects.
I just have a lot of confidence in myself and my fellow man to do just that - evolve for the better, gas prices be damned.
