I beat the races, but only because I'm VERY selective.
I've all but given up on midweek races. The cheaper horses that run then are just too inconsistent to have any confidence in.
I mostly bet on stakes races that attract a greater share of "dead money" in which top contenders are overbet, creating overlays on overlooked horses that are on the improve (but often have misleading PPs or a few recent losses that gets the masses to look for "better" horses). I also rarely bet at less than 10-1, unless I really like a horse in a short field (but my rule of thumb is to never take odds that are less than the number of horses in a race...so I'll take 8-1 in a six-horse field, but not 8-1 in a 10-horse field).
Of course, this does lead to long stretches of losses, too, but I come out ahead in the long run when the longshots come in (and if you're betting quality horses, they do outrun their odds in big races)...but certainly not making enough to quit my day job
