The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced Monday that it opened an investigation into the recent Democratic National Committee leaks on WikiLeaks.
The FBI is hoping to figure out the “nature and scope” of the leaks, saying “a compromise of this nature is something we take very seriously.”
“The FBI is investigating a cyber intrusion involving the DNC and are working to determine the nature and scope of the matter. A compromise of this nature is something we take very seriously, and the FBI will continue to investigate and hold accountable those who pose a threat in cyberspace.”
More than 19,000 emails from Democratic officials were leaked Friday in advance of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The leaks show several DNC officials planning strategies to take down former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. Officials questioned his commitment to his Jewish faith and his supporters, among other things.
Democrat officials believe the hack came from Russia, with DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz calling the breach a “serious incident.”
