Why would the average citizen need to own an AR-15?

From a rational perspective it defies logic that individuals are permitted to possess an AR15 or similar type weapon - if someone tries to break into my house and i fire a 9 mm at them they are running - 8 days a week - this is not a 5 hour fire fight in Kabul where the bigger fire power will win out

Nobody has provided a legitimate reason to needing one, just wanting one. I think the Internet helps create these mental health issues but the problem has been unaddressed for so long I don’t think changes can catch up quick enough.
I gave one, but in a nutshell, to defend against people who would want to take my property, rights, and freedom.

So, over the course of two pages here at the RX, we've established nobody "needs" one. They just like to "have" them?

I gave multiple reasons, home defense and making sure people don't take my freedom, rights, and property.

There's a reason no one has invaded this country since the revolution.

But let's be real about it. You don't "need" an AR-15 for home defense right? A simple handgun or shotgun does just fine. Making sure people don't take your freedom, rights and property? What does that mean?

Again, AR-15s are the best for home defense. They have magazines you can load very quickly and have very little recoil compared to a shotgun, so they're ideal for smaller people. Last night I timed myself trying to load an empty shotgun and an empty AR with a preloaded magazine. It took :48 seconds to load my shotgun with 6 shells, :12 seconds to load my AR with a 30 round preloaded mag.

I can load an M9 in about 3 seconds. I simply insert the magazine and that gives me 15 rounds. I think if I need more than 15 rounds for home defense, there may be a problem.

I could probably get :03 seconds if I didn't time myself starting from lying in bed. Criminals tend to travel in packs, and you're realistically going to need 2-3 well placed shots per attacker, so 8-12 bullets if you're dealing with 4 bad guys. The problem is those bullets need to be well placed, and it's entirely possible you miss altogether. I've been at the gun range and seen people accidentally fire while into the ground while getting their gun out of the holster, stand 10-15 feet from the paper target and miss the paper entirely, stand 10-15 feet away and miss the human shaped silhouette entirely, and this is where there's no threat. If you're mentally and physically tired and your adrenaline is pumping, you won't be the best shot, especially dealing with multiple moving targets.

Hunting, and home security are nice to have, but they aren't what the 2nd amendment is about.

Help me understand. I'm not trying to fan flames but one thing doesn't make sense to me. To begin with i'm not a gun owner although I do plan to buy a hand gun in the near future for protection

Why would someone need an AR-15 rifle? I can understand stocking your home with a 9MM, or .45 and even a shot gun for protection If you hunt then even a few rifles works.

But why would someone need to have an assault rifle?

We should only be allowed to have things we "need"?
