A vote on drilling? Pelosi says, "Use your imagination."

The price of gasoline has hit everyone hard, and now it's time for Congress to act. No, I'm not talking about a "big government" solution... the Congress sticking its nose where it doesn't belong and trying to "blame" someone or something for the ups and downs of capitalism. I'm talking about Congress simply realizing that the laws of supply and demand are at work, and to help bring prices down, Americans need more supply. And we need it now!
Despite the calls from the majority of Americans to increase drilling, which would increase supply and decrease our dependency on hostile Middle Eastern governments, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has sent Congress home for the summer. She is refusing to vote on energy legislation and would rather turn a deaf ear to the voices of the American people. She is not doing her job, and we need a change. You can help...
In an
interview this weekend with George Stephanopoulos, Pelosi continued to evade questions about why she won't allow a vote on more domestic drilling. She spoke nonsense to the point where even Stephanopoulos got frustrated. At one point, the exchange went like this:
STEPHANOPOULOS: But why not allow votes on all that? When you came in as Speaker you promised in your commitment book "A New Direction for America," let me show our viewers, you said that "Bills should generally come to the floor under a procedure that allows open, full, fair debate consisting of full amendment process that grants the Minority the right to offer its alternatives." If they want to offer a drilling proposal, why can't they have a vote?
PELOSI: They'll have to use their imagination as to how they can get a vote and then they may get a vote.
Use their imagination? This is the speaker of the House! We need action, not left-wing babble. It's time for President Bush to call a special session of Congress and put Pelosi back to work.
Before I get to our call for action, I'd like to pass along some simple facts and figures that help paint the real picture of oil and gas prices. As I mentioned earlier, the liberals in Congress are quick to assign "blame" when it comes to a situation affecting Americans. By doing so, they can say that they will help "solve" the problem. Their solution, however, is to bring in more government controls, stifle free enterprise, and take away the power of the people.
Supply and demand works! The liberals just need to see it. As gas prices rose from $2 per gallon, there was some mild grumbling across the country. Did people change their habits? No. Did they start rising up in protest? No. Did the auto industry step up and make changes? No. None of this happened because despite the modest moans and groans, the supply/demand situation had not reached a critical mass.
Now, as gas prices hover at $4 per gallon, what is happening? People are up in arms. They have exceeded their price point, and are demanding action. What's happening? The auto makers are responding with more fuel efficient vehicles. There are more efforts at developing and producing for the market electric and alternative fuel vehicles. And, there is a demand by the public for more drilling in the United States. All of this has come about with no government input. It is simply the market at work. And it's working.
For the liberals, the villain they point to is "big oil" -- the evil oil companies with their obscene profits. The plan for the liberals is to actually tax the profits of the oil companies because they deem the companies are making too much. Now, if that doesn't strike you as the most un-American thing to do, then you've been living in France for too long.
Let's look at the classic lemonade stand example. The main expense, of course, is the supply of lemons. There are other costs involved, but let's assume those are relatively constant. After I factor in all the costs, I then determine the selling prices to make a profit on each glass sold. Now, what happens when word spreads and people start realizing they want the lemonade more than a Diet Coke. The demand goes up. The lemon growers decide to raise the prices dramatically. So, the price of a glass of lemonade goes up because it costs more to purchase lemons. As it turns out, people are willing to drink and drink the lemonade, so the demand keeps increasing, and I am making record profits simply because I'm selling more lemonade.

The same things apply to the gas situation and "big oil." I am a fan of sports cars, so when I travel, I often pick up a magazine such as Car and Driver. In this month's issue, the Editor-in-Chief Csaba Csere, wrote an interesting article pointing out some of the facts and figures that the liberals conveniently fail to mention.
A barrel of crude oil contains 42 gallons and currently costs (at time of publishing) about $130. That means the raw material (think lemons) costs $3.10 a gallon. For finding the oil, getting it out of the ground, transporting it to a refinery, turning it into gasoline, and distributing that gasoline, ExxonMobil cleared about 58 cents per gallon in 2007, based on figures in its annual report. Of that 58 cents, Exxon paid about 25 cents in federal income tax. The feds also collected 18.4 cents of excise tax per gallon. Meanwhile, the state of Michigan collects 19.875 cents per gallon of "excise and environmental" taxes, along with 24 cents of sales tax (at $4 per gallon). So, ExxonMobil nets 33 cents per gallon, while our federal and state governments take 87 cents per gallon.
So, who profits more from high oil prices? Big oil or big government?
Which leads us to our current situation. To help increase supply, America needs to drill for oil at home, and we need to do it now! Relying on hostile governments for our oil supply does not make any sense, and yet that is exactly what Nancy Pelosi would have us do.
There is now an effort underway by congressional Republicans to bring Congress back into session so that a vote could be on an energy bill. Congressman Mike Pence (R-IN) sent a asking him to convene a special session of Congress.
Today the Democrat majority of Congress adjourned for a five-week vacation without taking a vote on bipartisan measures that would lessen our dependence on foreign oil by allowing more domestic drilling on the Outer Continental Shelf.
"The American people won't get a vacation from high gasoline prices, so Congress shouldn't take a vacation until we vote to lessen our dependence on foreign oil.
"Since the Speaker has decided not to keep the House in session to allow this vote, I renew my call for President Bush to convene an immediate energy special session of Congress. Under Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution, the President has the power 'on extraordinary occasions' to convene the Congress.
House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH)
issued a statement on Sunday saying that House Republicans "will be back on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives again Monday to continue the unprecedented protest that began last Friday, when dozens of Republicans joined hundreds of American citizens on the House floor to protest Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-CA) decision to send Congress home for the rest of the summer without a vote on legislation to lower gas prices and move America toward energy independence."
We need a real debate on this issue, and we need Congress to act according to the will of the American people. Please contact President Bush today and urge him to call a special session. If Nancy Pelosi and the far left prefer to do nothing, then it is up to President Bush to force their hand.
