I used to be a huge hockey fan in the 70's and 80's and slowly lost interest in the sport. Hard to follow on TV and very watered down league now with to many teams. The trap ruined the game. I'd rather just F around on the internet then watch this boring ass sport. Evertime I look at the scores in the paper they all seem to be 2-1, 3-2.

I love hockey. The biggest problems it has is poor leadership. The commissioner is worthless and there is too many old-guard owners like Bill Wirtz in Chicago. Thank God hockey is strong in the south, because Bettmans leadership has weakened the sport greatly in Canada, Boston, and Chicago.

It is a joke now. I know I would not pay $75 to see Phoenix, Nashville, Florida, Columbus, etc. in Chicago. I'll wait and see the Rangers, Toronto, or Montreal come in. Oh, none of these three teams played in Chicago this year.

You can see the best team in hockey for $24 with game packs in Tampa.

Problem is no one cares about any of the southern teams in the league. Theres a reason they are $24. Lets see how they do when Cup tickets are $150.

The primary reason that I don't really care for hockey is the glamourizing of all the fighting that goes on. Half of the highlights you see on ESPN are showing the fighting. In all the other major sports, fighting results in either an ejection, suspension or both. I could never figure out why the NHL doesn't put in place the same idea. Yes, it is a rough sport and tempers flare but it's no rougher than football. They athletes are talented but for this oldman if I want to watch fighting, I'll watch professional boxing, not a bunch of guys throw off their gloves, spin around in circles on skates, while they slip and slide trying to punch each other. What does that have to do with the sport of hockey? Just this oldman's opinion.

Love the game and love it when people say they can't see the puck. The puck is BLACK the ice is WHITE. I don't see whats hard about that? I guess if you grew up playing and watching it then its easier?!

As for the fighting Ted, it is simply part of the game as we know it. Just like a soccer player getting kicked, rolling around and dying on the field...getting a stretcher delivered to him....then jumping off at the sidelines and doing power sprints lMFAO

The heart of the game has been removed and it only appears in the playoffs. TOO MANY GAMES! TOO MANY TEAMS MAKE THE PLAYOFFS !! And by the time the cup rolls around, it is friggin SUMMER!!!!! Nobody was a bigger hockey fan than I...........but I watch very little now.

ted, respect to ur opinion, perhaps this does keep many from becoming hockey fans. However if you would have seen the Ottawa/Philly game last night & seen the reaction of the Philly crowd when the brawl broke out...I think the deduction might be we need more fighting in the game. The fan's were like rabid animals during the fight, on their feet screaming & yelling...they loved it!!!!!

you have to watch the players more & worry less about focusing on the puck....after a while, the players movements & actions will dictate to you where the puck is.

They need to eliminate the helmets, then maybe the Europeans would not use so much illegal sticking knowing they have no helmets on.

Fatty,
That damn red & blue laser line drove me nuts!!!! Could be the WORST addition to a sporting event in the Millennium!!!!!!
Anyhow, I have no problem with helmets - in fact, anything that promotes "sfaety" is good in my eyes. There is life after sports!
That said, I like a good fight to keep players "honest" and the helmets make no difference. Now had someone grabbed Havlat and taken a few swings at him , maybe he'd think twice about using his stick that way again. A helmet won't deter him...a mask won't deter him....a penalty won't deter him.......but a big fat lump on his melon WILL DETER HIM!!!!!
They have effectively removed MOST of the fighting from hockey over the last 15 years - THAT is the reason that there is so much CHEAP BS on the ice. No fear of the real "repercusssions" that hung over the head of a cheapshot artist in the 70's

In my circle of 20 or so male friends(I'm from Canada), this is the breakdown of the sports they primarly follow:

1 - basesball (everyone one thinks it's toooo boring)

1- NBA (no real interest up here except from a gambling standpoint)

everyone else pretty much follows both hockey and football equally. Hockey rules but lots of NFL and CFL followers .

The fans are conditioned to accept fighting as part of the game. They get rabid because their belief is that there is nothing wrong with it because it is an accepted part of hockey. Similar to "professional wrestling", and I use that word loosely because it is all entertainment, the fans act up and even today's children are copying the antics of the wrestler's practicing at home by jumping off off tables, roofs, etc. There have been many permanently injured copying what they see as accepted behavior. My point is the game accepts it, so the fans accept it. For me, it has nothing to do with the skilled athletic ability of the skaters. They are clearly as talented as any professional in their sport. I enjoy watching the Stanley Cup Playoffs because there is, to some extent, less of this because the players realize that getting a major would hurt their team and could cost them an important game. They play good hard nosed hockey but tend to stay away from the fighting a bit more. For me, that's when it's enjoyable to watch.

100% agreed Ted.
In the regular season there is far more because guys are more inclined to act foolishly when there is less on the line. In the playoffs you usually see guys on their best behaviour because there is so much on the line. If they remove fighting from the game entirely, you will see the cheap injuries, which are often the most damaging, will skyrocket.

the drama is just too far and few between. the puck flys way too fast from the stick to the goal. you watch hockey for 3 hours to see 2-5 goals that take 2-3 seconds total.

after a goal is scored, most networks do a horrible job showing the replay. we get like 1-2 looks at it, so if you grab something from the pantry and return you miss out on a scored goal completely.

great team work and "scary passing" is rewarded about 1 out of 20 times. so much pretty stuff happens but results in nothing much of the time.

a 2 goal lead with a great goalie after the 1st period gives the viewer no reason to watch the last 2 periods.

the players are on skates. the footwork and athleticism and control and power of the players isnt as apparent as in football, basketball, soccer and even baseball.

hockey is a fast game. but it would be cool with playboy playmates wearing helmets and furry bikinis. then the game would be slowed down enough we could actually see things happen. and there would be enough excitement looking at the babes to cover the 2 hours and 59 minutes and 57 seconds of the 3 hours to make up for what makes hockey as lame as it is.
