i can see now that all i had to do to avoid this thread being banished to the rubber room was to put "ot" at the beginning of the title.

Actually, it depends but it really doesn't matter much. If you want to keep food warmer/cooking longer after you take the package out of the oven, put the shiny side in. If you want food to cook slower in the oven then put the shiny side out, all other things being equal.

But the differences in cooking/keeping warm would hardly be measurable so it doesn't matter. It only matters if you are dealing with fine tolerances like that of launching a rocket to Mars.....at home, it doesn't matter, I'm sure. tulsa

<!-- start content -->Tin foil or tinfoil is a thin leaf made of tin.
Commonly, it is a misnomer for aluminium foil, as tin foil was commercially available before the aluminium counterpart, and some people continue to refer to the new product by the name of the old one.
Tin foil is stiffer than aluminium foil. It tends to give a slight tin taste to food wrapped in it, which is major reason why it has largely been supplanted by aluminium and other materials for wrapping food.
The first audio recordings on phonograph cylinders were made on tin foil.

Aluminium foil's heat conductive qualities make it a common accessory in hookah smoking: a sheet of perforated aluminum foil is frequently placed between the coal and the tobacco, allowing the tobacco to be heated without coming into direct contact with the burning coal.

all of this is from wiki

It is used for wrapping food in order to preserve it, for example when storing leftover food in a refrigerator (where it serves the additional purpose of preventing odour exchange), when taking sandwiches on a journey, or when selling some kinds of take-away or fast food. Mexican restaurants in the United States, for example, typically provide take-away burritos wrapped in aluminium foil. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, tin foil was in common use; aluminium foil largely supplanted it, but some people long continued to call aluminium foil by the name of its tin counterpart (perhaps due to its being shorter to say).
