What's gotten lost in this discussion is that bookie posted his racist comments BEFORE he was ever provoked by me. Sure, I made it worse by pissing him off, but his initial racist remarks in that thread were completely unprovoked. Not that being provoked makes being racist any more understandable or tolerable.
I don't remember bookie being a prick in the past. And he seemed to have cooled off well before the decision to ban him was made. I'd probably just put him on post review for three months (anyone who's been on PR before can attest that it's a bitch), which is a significant enough amount of time for him to realize that it's not worth it to post his racist-ass crap, even if he does feel that way. Also email him and make it clear that if he posts anything even remotely racist again, that he'll be banned for good.
If I was running this place, anyone who posted anything racist in nature would immediately be banned for good. But I don't. And a precedent for situations like this has been set (see BEANTOWNJIM and burn_in_hell_atta, neither of whom have been banned despite repeatedly violating the racism policy), so it seems unfair that bookie would receive such a harsh punishment while the aforementioned racists keep their posting privileges.
I disagree with some of these guys who say no action should be taken. If racism truly isn't tolerated here, more than a slap on the wrist is necessary to get the point home. Why not use this situation to establish a firm precedent? Any racism = 3 month post review, 2nd offense = lifetime ban. I really feel that anyone who has to deal with post review for an extended period of time will realize how much it sucks and how it's just not worth it to post that crap.
But anyway, to summarize, I think a 3-month post review is appropriate, with a warning that any future racism will result in a lifetime ban, no questions asked. To ban him for good just seems too harsh considering the previous precedent for this type of stuff.
Anyway, that's just my opinion. You're the head moderator, so the decision is yours.
Actually I was basing my decision on a report a post that demanded that I got Bookie out of here. Perhaps 90 days post review for both Bookie and Skinsraj28 is the more fairer choice, I am sure the rest of the mods would agree with me.
I will email him tomorrow and discuss if he cares to continue posting on post review for 3 months. I am leaving for Las Vegas Wednesday morning so this issue may not get resolved as quickly as everyone would like, I will still be monortoing my email in Las vegas though..
