Darryl,
Most Syndicates will bang an opening line to move it as the public sees it they will folow where the money is going! This is why a line will move gradually! Then on game day they load up late the other way! Only on opening lines can a large syndicate influence the public!
OK, thanks jls for the info....one more q...when do most syndicates pounce? I ask this because different books give opening lines at different times. Is it usually Monday morning for the games the following weekend, or earlier? Or is it earlier for week 1 only? Just wondering...I'm trying to get a feel for what's really going on. Thanks.
If more then 1 out of every four games did not fall within 10 points of the spread, then It was probably a pretty good day for the books(a lot of 10and 6 point teasers blown). Seattle,Pitt,San Fran,Houston,Denver,NYg,Buff,Minn,Atl.
Darryl,
If you see a line move 1.5 to 3 pts. within the first day or two its not the 100$ player moving the line??Perfect example Miami Dolphins opened very early at 10. Within 2 days was 11.5 with a week 12, within 2weeks 13 - 14. MAJOR MONEY was dumped on Miami to move the line 4 points! All the betters that loaded up at 14 to make it drop to 13.5 were on the right side! With all the action going late Large sums of money might not be viible at crunch time but on an opening line it is very visible!

Darryl,
Usually the betting public will cause line changes. But be aware of syndicates that spread tons of money around all week to move a line one way then bet double the amount the other way on game day!

Maybe we should get that guy Rob Gillespie from BoDog to write one of his articles about how much "the house" won this week. It seemed like once a month or so last year he wrote about how much "the house" would win each week and on which games.
how to determine if the books had a good week.......
question: how did the books do over the weekend?
possible answers by book
1. we got killed....means they made a small profit
2. we didnt do nuthin....means they had a good
week
3. it was ok.....means they won huge
4. we had a pretty decent week.......means they have to hire more help to count the $100 bills...........
Thanks for the explanation and I can see the reasoning there. If I think about it I can imagine that sort of thing happening, but what does the syndicate do if the public pushes the line back down to where it came from? Or do they usually avoid such situations because they are able to predict what the public will do?
And do you know of any places on the web where I could see the original opening line (like the 10 you mentioned) on game day, say, so that when I'm placing a bet I know the historical line movement?
Darryl,
9 out of 10 times the public will follow the line change and bet with the movement! Imperial Palace in Vegas and a couple places here on the RX posted Miami-10 or 10.5 as an opening line. Bout 3 weeks ago! not evey game moves like this you have to watch the opening lines on Sunday evening and see them on Tuesday to see the movement! Alot of times the oves are the right way to go! Me I call my local guy and ask him which game has the highest action and go the other way, bet with the books! Made a lot of money that way!

The Houston-Miami line opened at 14 and closed at 13.5. Doesn't that indicate that more money was bet on Houston than Miami by the players? If the answer is not necessarily, then how does one find out which side got more action?

Even with this MOVE, the PUBLIC was all over the DOLPHINS..........Over ALL Sat and Sun was HUGE for the BOOKS IMO.......
it seems people put way too much stock in "one" game...ie miami/houston......or whatever game you think the public either loaded op on and won or lost..............
remember these words....."ONE GAME DOESNT MAKE A WEEK".......as far as the book is concerned.....an old saying that was/is commonly used amongst credit shops.......
translation........the whole world and god included can bet one side and win............and it wont mean diddly doo-doo
Hey Dimeplayersonly,
I was only trying to explain to Darryl bout syndicate betting and used Miami as an example!!! Back in the late 70's or early 80's Syndicate betting was huge. Now with so many millions being bet now its tough to move a line! How did you make out this past Sunday, lose like MOST people!!
Thanks jls for sharing all that info. I'm inclined to bet the same way ie. against the public. But to do that I need to be able to figure out which side the public is on. I went into last Sunday with this in mind but I lost big because I was wrong about which teams the public liked. I got the hard part right, but the easy part wrong. I guess I have to start watching the lines earlier. Thanks again.
jls626...............i wasnt referring to your reply specifically, alot of people do assume that one game will make or break the book.........generally not the case...
