If not for all the Trump hoopla the audience is probably like 1/3rd to 1/4th of what it was. A thursday night in the middle of the summer and it did rankings on par with the NBA finals and world series.

The first debate in 2012 got about 20% of the audience last night.

August is usually the worst TV ratings month of the year.

Of course Trump drove viewership. Presidential debates don't do higher rankings than premium live sporting events. If he can keep driving ratings to republican debates it could give the other candidates a lot of free exposure.
