WINNERS: Winnipeg Jets
The consensus in Sunrise is that the Jets had the best draft, top to bottom, of any team. The Jets had Kyle Connor fall into their laps at No. 17, and Jack Roslovic was a strong pick at No. 25. Erik Foley, at No. 78, could be one of those latter round picks we marvel at some years from now. Seven forwards, and four straight Americans to start for GM Kevin Cheveldayoff.

Kings just dumped Richards contract and now have about 6.5 mill in cap space. I think they're going to make one more big move now.

He was in the AHL all last season, and he did have to clear waivers, so not that big of a surprise to me. He's still gonna get paid.

“The Los Angeles Kings today have exercised the team’s right to terminate the contract of Mike Richards for a material breach of the requirements of his Standard Player’s Contract. We are not prepared to provide any more detail or to discuss the underlying grounds for the contract termination at this time.”
This seems like something neither Richards, nor his reps nor the NHLPA would be amenable to, depending on why the Kings decided to do this. Richards’ 12-year $69 million contract was supposed to run through 2019-20. LA acquired Richards in the summer of 2011. He won two Stanley Cups with the team, but never seemed to play to his prior level with Philadelphia where he was the team's captain. His highest point total with the Kings was 44.

I wonder if this has anything to do with Stoll's coke bust? I believe that Martin Jones and Richard's were both with Stoll when it went down. Stoll's not being resigned and Martin Jones got traded to the Bruins.

I'm wondering the same thing. Lombardi's has a reputation for being loyal to his players, so I hope whatever it is, is serious. He even gave Richards a second chance already last season when LA could have bought him out without taking a hit.

When Lombardi gave Richards a second chance last season part of the deal was that Richard stay here and work out in the off season. I'm hoping that's not the border issue, cause that would be petty, but how shitty of a thing would it be for Richards to do after getting a second chance?

The NHL already signed off on it so I'm guessing that what ever it is was pretty cut and dry. Kings were near to having a deal with the Oilers to take Richards too, but Lombardi stopped the negotiations when he became aware of whatever it was.

An interesting fact is that this news came to the Kings organization, the same day that Stoll got his plea deal.
