here you guys go again. trying to compare a guy that maybe 1 or 2 of you have ever seen play to the best player in 2009. Out of curiousity. How do any of you know how good Joe Dimaggio was. You've never seen him play. All you've heard are stories from your parents, baseball historians and looked at his stats on the internet. And for the record Albert Pujols will destroy almost every one of Joe's stats by the time he is done. Hell right now he is only 8 HR's short of Dimaggio with 2000 less at bats. In the next 3 years he will have 150 more HR's than Dimaggio, more 2B, more runs scored, more RBI's, a higher slugging %, a higher on base %, and Pujols will still have less at bats.

All your figures are correct but DiMaggio's first 7 years before the war are compare equally to Pulhous 1st 7 years and at this stage thats all you
can compare. Though Pulhous will pass Joe D. in almost every catagory as you suggest factor in the 3 years DiMaggio missed in his prime & it isn't far fetched to suggest up to this point in Albert's career, they are 1 & 1A as far as #5's go.

Also remember in DiMaggio's 7th year the average teams HR's per game was .44 in Pulhous it was 1.02, big difference inconditions favoring Pulhous RBI, SLG. PCT, & HR totals.

I'll take Bench. Much harder position to play, and he played it in an era with better (and faster) players. Outfielders with good stats are dime a dozen.

Pujols is on the juice.

Why is it Williams by a mile. Pulojs is the best of his generation. Also, you know it goes to show the stats back in the day were a joke. Everybody was hitting .330, but today guys don't do that anymore. In the day of the specialists, it is much more difficult.

Check your stats before making outlandish claims i.e:

NL BA 15 yrs 1992-2006 .361

AL BA 15 yrs 1946-1960 .346, only twice did anyone win the title w/an avg over .360

The highest AL BA during that period was .388 by Teddy BG in 1957. And 1 .369 again by Ted in 48.

During the period 92-2007 in the NL, there was a 370, 394, 368, 372, 363, 379, 372, 370, & 362. 9 times as opposed tp 2.

I picked those time periods @ random, any other stats to back your claim?

Don't forget the 4+ yrs missed serving his country. In 1957 approaching 40 he led the league w/.388.

Yes, he's THE greatest hitter of all time. Ruth a close 2nd. Albert is also a great hitter, but he's no Teddy, but then no one is.@):)

Oh & BTW

I DID see Ted & Joe D play. As for # 5, as much as admired Joe, I have to give the edge to Bench. Position played, every all time team picked usually has him as the C. Joe lost an awful lot to injuries & time in the service tho. He's an imortal.:toast:
The best all around player I ever saw in person was Willie M. How bout those 50's in CF, Joe, Mickey, Willie & Duke.@):)

Heath didn't quite live up to expectations so as a #5 he ranks poorly but I do like him as a blue-dog democrat!
