Has to be Mo Vaughn. I don't think he is playing this year. Dreifort has to be up there. 12 Mil for a middle reliever! Not being critical of him.

General, it is stopping. I don't think we will see another 20 million a year contract for many years.

The fact that Manny Ramirez was put on waivers and no team would take him (and his salary) is a good indication of that.

The money Vlad Guerrero (14 mil a year) and Miguel Tejada (12 mil a year) got this year also shows that salaries may have peaked for a while. We may see a one year deal approaching that much if one of very select few players (ie. Randy Johnson, Barry Bonds) sign short term deals but I think gone are the days of the long-term 20 mil a year deal (at least for some time).

I love when Yankee fans argue how good Derek Jeters is the and they bring up his 4 rings..well I guess that makes Steve Kerr the best basketball player in the NBA...Jeter is a product of his environment! put Buddy Biancalana on that team and he would have 4 rings too!

Next Post wil be "he is a winner"...put Jeter on any other team in baseball and lets see how many rings he would have!

Swami- in all seriousness I don`t hate the Yankees at all...I think the players NY has are some of the better guys in baseball...I am not wild about George though, and I am very disgusted at how the players union has destroyed the greatest game of all time...

Let me ask you a question Swami, remember the play Jeter made against Oakland where he rushed over to the 1st baseline and cut the ball off, then wheeled and threw out Giambi?
I have always wondered why all the fuss over that play? I think the ball would have arrived and got Giambi even if Jeter never cut it off,lol..I could be wrong, but I always thought this...BTW I love Jeter he is a great player...A great clutch player, I just think he`s a bit overpaid...

If Jeter doesn't cut off the throw, Giambi is safe and the play isn't close. As I recall the throw was quite a bit off-line, way past the first base line, and it took a Jeter catch and "flip" to get the ball to Jorge and to the point where there could be a play at the plate.

The play was SICK....just another example of the guy being "clutch" and "having a nose for the ball." To this day, I have no IDEA what the hell he was even doing there.

It sickens me, even as a Yankee fan, how much airtime this guy gets but FRANKLY he gets shit done even though he isn't the best from a pure statistical standpoint.

Regarding him being overpaid, I wouldn't pay him that much but seeing the guy play every day I understand why George does.

BTW, Giambi should have slid.

Not too many knowledgable Yankee fans point to the number of rings.

No doubt the guy was surrounded by talent but he is a MAJOR reason why those teams won championships. I'm a numbers guy myself but Jeter is "clutch." I attribute it to the fact that he is more focused when he recognizes that the team needs a play and if it comes to him he has the resolve not to miss the opportunity to contribute.

To even THINK that Kerr and Jeter are SIMILAR from a talent or contribution standpoint is just plain foolish. A better comparison would be Scottie Pippen.

I have to agree with The Swami here, that play that Jeter made was pure baseball serendipity. If Jeter does'nt make the play, Giambi scores, and its a different series.

Jacoby Ellsbury comes to mind. He makes something North of 20 M, didn't play a single game last year, only had one good year in his career is now about 36 or so and projects to be a 5th or 6th outfielder if he plays at all this season. Giancarlo Stanton has to put up MVP numbers to earn his pay not just better than average

A lot of terrible baseball contracts. Most baseball GMs have no idea what they're doing. Only a few get it

Looks like they are starting to get it. Nobody wants to sign Machado or Harper for 10 years and 300 M +. None of those huge contracts ever work out for the club. A-Rod, Cano, Ellsbury for starters and there are plenty more. I really can't think of one that ever really worked out well for the club . Maybe David Ortiz with Boston he was good right to the end of his career, not sure if he had one of those lifer contracts ?
