What's the worst sports injury you've seen in person?

Interesting few of them:

1) Baseball in 6th grade - guy hits a double in the gap, outfielder throws home (guy coming home from 2nd on the hit), hits kid in the face and breaks his jaw - was my friend, had to drink through a straw for a month or so

2) Hockey - guy on my team gets checked and grabs his arm and yells. Comes over to bench and lifts up jersey and bone sticking out (looked like the scene from The Fly)

3) Football - guy running full speed and dives for a pass and hits shoulder on a small tree, looked/sounded awful

I was pitching and this guy ripped a shot to the shortstop, who was an excellent fielder, who was ready to take it on one hop, but the ball smashed off some debris on the shit field we are on and smashed the guy in the face.

He fell like a ton of bricks and the coaches came running out onto the field. He got up after a minute or two, and I’ll never forget this moment, he looked at me, smiled and his front six teeth were gone with pieces of four of them suspended in his mouth being held up by his braces.

Worst injury I had playing was during a football game. I was playing special teams, covering a kickoff. I was going full speed towards the kick returner and got taken out by a blocker, who I never even saw. The next thing I remember was more than a quarter later. Apparently, I walked off the field and had several conversations with coaches and teammates. I don’t remember any of it. They knew I was hurt, so I didn’t go back in, but later said I seemed out of it, but was holding a conversation and making sense.


My friend said it looked like my lower body kept running while my upper body just stopped. On top of the hit, the back of my head bounced off the field. The worst of it was days later. I would get incredibly dizzy if I stood up to quickly and had vomited a few times when I looked directly at a bright light.

Worst injury I saw was sometime in the early 90’s at an Eagles game against Chicago. The game was at the shit hole Vet and Bears WR Wendell Davis was running wide open down the field and just buckled, it looked like he stepped on landmine or something and both legs just turned to mush. Later, they said his cleats got caught in a seam in the turf. He blew everything out in both knees. I think that ended his career as well.

Saw a Joe Theisman leg break at my brothers football game many years ago

When Go For Wand broke her leg at the Breeder's Cup. I actually heard her leg snap. 50,000 people groaned simultaneously. I sad day indeed.
