I would say Celtic Bill Russell might be on this list for he REFUSES to sign. i know that when he had an AMEX card he had an agreement with them that signing his slip with an "X" would have been good enough - and he also signed his per diem slip from the team that way, too. the less signatures there are out there of someone - the more they are worth so he has to be very high on the list.

i would also say autographs from "Cassius Clay" have to be worth a lot since he is now Muhammad Ali and his signature isn't as good as it used to be.

Wayne Gretzky autographed hockey stick.

Got it from a charity softball tourny when he was still in Edmonton. Both the stick and the autograph were free.

Too bad I broke the stick playing street hockey cause it was the only one I had left. Man was I into that game. What a dumb fu(k I was.

I think some good ones to have are: Stan Musual, John Wooden, Tom Seaver, Red Auerbach, Hank Aaron, Yogi Berra. Underrated HOF FB players like Blanda, Baugh, Namath.

Perhaps the hardest ones are Mike Marshall (the pitcher) and Bill Russell (Celtics).

The Jesse Owens' autographed track shoes from Munich 1936 might be worth something if it existed.

LOL Nanuk. Gretzky's the kind of guy that if your kid went up to him with a stick and jersey, he'd sign it no probs. It's a-holes like Jim Kelly, Pavel Bure and Bonds that makes turns kids off sports.

A story I read elsewhere with Pops Stargell however restored some faith.
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR> This night was "Willie Stargell night". You know, they honor him with a plaque, speech, and stuff just before the game. He's on the field just before they begin and some kid calls him over to sign a ball. He goes to the stands signs the ball and immediately 50-75 kids swamp him for autographs. After about a couple of minutes with game time fast approaching the guy to do the ceremony comes over and says "We have to get started Willie or the game will start late. Willie turns to the guy while still signing and says "We aren't starting until I'm through here. None of us would be here without them. The game can wait."<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Logan.
Willie Stargell story I have one....it was 1979 game 6 World Series....i had a ball signed by Dave Parker, Frank and Brooks Robinson and Willie comes walking up to take BP, I was really nervous, there in front of me was the 1979 NL MVP Willie Stargell, I had already gotten Brooks and Frank and I wanted Willie on the ball...So i just asked him, lol, Willie`s reply something like this " does anyone ask how I`m doing?" "They all just want my signature"

so he signs my ball 'STARGELL" no Willie

? I still have the ball 24 years later

Sounds like maybe he a fight with Mrs Stargell. At least he didn't try to run you over a la Bure.

J-man, living in your state, you MUST have Cal's autograph. Is he as nice as he seems? Nothing worse than a two faced jock who's all luvyduvy when the cameras are rolling but a complete tool when it's just the fans.

From covers....
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR> Got one for you on Jm Kelly. a kid walks up to him and asks him politely if he could autograph his rookie card. Kelly takes the card (in mint centered condition), autographs it and then proceeded to crease the card. The kid watched in horror as Kelly gave back the now worthless card and says, "here, now you can't sell it!" End of story? No. The same kid sees Kelly drinking at the hotel beachside bar with his back facing the beach. He immediately pulls out a basball and drills Kelly squarely in the back and runs away as Kelly turns in pain and yells "you ****ing kid I'm going to kill you". The kid turns and yells "how doesit feel asshole?" <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Well if it's a player that's STILL alive I would have to say:

Yogi Berra

There's no living player that's played with as many greats as YOGI and has influence the game as much as Yogi. http://www.yogi-berra.com

Yogi's Yogi-isms are everywhere, and most guys don't even know they are qouting Yogi.

Yogi's most famous is:

"It ain't over 'til it's over "

And I dedicate this Yogi-ism to our friend Lander:

"If the world were perfect, it wouldn't be"

Not to mention Hanna/Barbara's cartoon that got it's name from the ball player...Yogi Bear

I don`t collect autographs...I believe Cal is genuinely nice yes. In fact his mother lives across the street from mine in Aberdeen , Clover street , I won`t give the exact address, lol. Its very funny though to look across the street and imagine Cal once played in that yard ....I see Cal`s brother Billy around Harford Co. every now and then, and always see his mom, obviously....I believe the Ripken`s are the way they are because of their parents, they just want to be normal people...And his dad Rip Sr(RIP). was a good guy.
