Yeah, I can't wait to visit Austin. My sister is in the process of moving there. I was thinking it would be hard for me to relocate since the locals would have a better chance of getting a job over a transplant like myself.

I see Dell has been hiring for months so I could get a job there listening to people bitch over the phone about their computers for $25,000/year. Other than that I haven't seen much in my line of work.

What is it you like about Austin so much?

Let's See:

- Climate
- The chicks - I'm married, but when I was single - it was paradise
100,000 college students in the area
- Cost of Living - no state income tax, real estate fairly priced
- The music scene - Live Music Capitol
- The economy - Seems to be holding up strong compared to the
rest of the country
- The people - I grew up in New England, and found Texans to be
some of the nicest people on earth
- The Culture - Austin is an eclectic place, whatever you are into,
you can find it here
- The sports - While we don't have a "major league" team, we are
an hour from the Spurs, UT Texas has fantastic football, basketball
programs. We also have the Austin Toros of the NBDL. We are
2.5 hours to Dallas, if you want to see NBA, MBL, NFL... 3 hours
to Houston, if you want to see one of their teams.
- We are 3 hours from the coast if you want to go to the beach
- We are 5 hours from Mexico, if you want an adventure there
- There are plenty of lakes nearby if you are into: boating, swimming...

negatives:
- I miss the mountains

Zit, I'm in Iowa, -17 fucking degrees here...visited Austin for the first time a few months back and loved it...been trying to get a job down there ever since. What industries are doing the best? The jobs are kind of scarce according to the job sites...cant even get a call back for what I have applied for.

I think the problem is that Austin has a massive college student
population, and everyone that comes here to go to school that
is not from here wants to stay. So, there is always a lot of
competition for the jobs here.

That and the fact that there have been some layoffs due to the
economy, so those people are also vying for any open positions.

I happened to talk to someone today who is a recruiter for the
Austin high tech scene, and he said that there are open jobs
here, but there is tough competition for them.

What area are you in?

I love college girls!

Seriously though, I'll probably visit in April or May for a few days. One of my friends used to live there. I'm going to try to convince him to meet me down there to party.

I know you mentioned that you miss the mountains but don't they have rolling hills there? How about the heat in the summer?

Austin is on the eastern edge of the "hill country". Great place.

Hotter than hell in the summer, to escape the heat you could try El Paso, Lubbock or Amarillo. But the last 2 can get very cold but it dosent last.

As far as the economy, I dont know anyone losing their job but there is not much hiring either.
