like I said in your newbee friend's case he will get raped but the raping will be less if he sticks to solid play and plays pretty much premium hands for a bit and tries very little bluffing

cool- what do you consider a 'premium hand'?

I would not attempt to play as a brand newbee anything like for example

in pocket pairs unless you get in for cheap or checked to in the big blind

anything under pocket 7's and in non made hands I would stick to A/9 or better no A /rag

if you have suited connectors like 10/J , 10/Q J/Q k/Q play them also just my opinion good luck

Pick a type of poker:
holdem, stud, draw, razz, etc
Pick the style:
online, live
Treat the amount like a unit. You never want to risk more than two percent of your bankroll on one session.
Whatever style and game you choose try to master it before moving on to another.
I would add there are three main parts to poker:
Starting Hands
Poker Math
Reading Opponents
Study them as much as you can and in that order.
My biggest weakness is reading opponents. I think the best advice that worked for me was play to my personality. I'm more of an introvert so I play tight poker. GL!

The importance of position can't be understated - you play more hands in late position than you would in early position (first 3 seats at full table) as it gives you a chance to see how other people act before you have to make your decision. If checked to, you get to decide to end the round or make a bet.

When playing live::

Don't stare at the flop as it comes out.
Look at the other players when betting or the action is on them.
Make all your bets the same way (throw them out, or line them up neatly)
Look at your hole cards ONCE, memorize them, should never have to re-check them.
Where sunglasses.
Keep pre-flop raises at a standard. 3x the big blind, or 4x the BB. I wouldn't recommend raising different amounts for different hands unless you are playing a very loose table.
Don't talk too much, or at all during hands, ever.
Never show your cards after you win an uncontested pot.

These are all goofy. Don't talk at the table? That doesn't make you less of a poker player.

The way i read this its a guy and his friend trying to learn. I would try to find 2 or 3 other guys at least 1 of which is a decent player and play a home game 1 or 2 times a week. If you walk into a casino with NO experiance they will spot it early and you'll go broke quickly...
Playing the free games on the .net sites will also give you some experiance....
Experiance is the key...If u go to the casino and bring say $300 and lose it in an hour ( not a hard thing to do) you will prolly sour on poker right off the bat...and if u sit there and wait on AA before u play you wont have very much fun either.

Poker Training sites are also the big thing now...You can sign up at real poker training .com for $9.95 a month and they have some pretty good beginner thru expert videos and such that will get u started on the right track.

Poker is a lil like Golf. If u practice a bad swing everyday all u will do is get a better bad swing...You need to be practicing the correct swing before you can get better at it...

Not talking during hands you play isn't a goofy tip in the least.

You honestly think it makes a difference whether you talk or not at the poker table? How do you figure that?

Hey, I got a very hot tip I just learned at this forum called the RX. If you don't talk at the poker table you'll actually be a better player. Good grief.

1 position
2 position
3 position.

in position you can play any 2 cards.

I talk at the table all the time.

Don't fall in love with suited cards.

Starting out I would sit down and just watch the first few rounds. Unless you have have a very good hand. Try to play mid to low pairs as cheap as possible.

If you have the best hand after the flop bet it. Don"t slow play anything.
