Telephone access, service via the phone as well as email.
Listening to the customer, instead of talking.
Being polite, sounds simple but so few are able to manage it.
Understanding what customer service is and speaking and understanding English.
Ability to write comprehensive emails.

SDS Manager/ Barry Clark:

If SDS offers 10 cent lines in baseball, and SportsBettingTrivia offers 20 cent lines in baseball with the possibility of getting an extra 5 cents if you get the trivia answer right, why wouldn't everyone simply play with SDS (at least for baseball)??

If I am understanding this correctly, the BEST possible line you could get at SportsBettingTrivia would be the same as the line at SDS, and if you answer the trivia question wrong, you'll get a worse line than SDS.

Am I missing something ? Does the Trivia shoppe offer a better bonus or some other incentive ?

I like the way this thread is flowing. I see a lot of insight and I hope some books are taking notes. Some books talk a good game but many fall short and sometimes don't even know it themselves.

If clerks don't give a shit about their jobs, that's managements fault for keeping them on the payroll.

There really is no good excuse for bad service.

If management doesn't give a shit, that's another story, and the book will suffer accordingly.

Service doens't have to be necessarily related to a pay check.... As long as you have your employees motivated service will be good and will continue to improve.
It's actually up to management to find a way to motivate their staff... they can do it by paying higher salaries than average, but I find more efficient and cheap other ways to boot motivation in your employees.

I agree, the cheapest way. Is Management setting an example of hard work and honesty. The riff raff will hate management and go away all alone. The good clerks stick around, many times with a fair salary, not outstanding but fair. The environment the head of department creates and the cs orientation which they may display during work hours is enough to trascend to the rest of the department. It's up to the head to think...

Give me polite and courteous under all circumstances. I do not care if its a front, just act if necessary. Do not act like i should know. Pretend im new & dumb. Professionalism is a must and pleasant demeanor is critical IMO.
