I do a good bit for local charities of various sorts, because I believe that acting locally is the most sensible thing to do.

I also support Heifer International because it addresses some very serious problems in the Third World, but does so with the aim of teaching self-reliance rather than simply flooding the area with cash and moving on.

I also support the Armed Forces Relief Trust, which provides financial and other aid to the families of active-duty military personnel.

And, once every 18-24 months I shear off a foot or two of hair and give it to Locks of Love, and organisation which crafts and donates hairpieces to children undergoing chemo- or radiotherapy treatment.

I donate to Make a Wish Foundation and www.Excellerfund.org. I love to bet on the ponies, and feel I should give something back to the horses that are facing slaughter if not rescued. It is just unbelievable to me that champion horses such as Exceller and Ferdinand met their deaths in slaughter houses!

The funny thing is, I got a thank you card from this little girl in 2001, including a picture of her with her hairpiece, which was touching and all ... but I can't help but wonder how she/mommy/etc. would feel if they actually saw the beast from which that wig was made.

I donate to St. Judes and Rileys Hospital for children. Spend a day in one of these places and if you have a heart, you will break.

Read about how DEADLY this disease is and how it effects millions of children.
My daughter, Alexis Marie, is 21 years old and has had this disease since her 2nd birthday.
Four injections every single day...four blood checks every single day. FOREVER..FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE.
Alexis Marie is just one person. Millions of young people MUST do this DAILY.
It's starting to take its toll. Eye surgery!

Please read about this DEADLY disease.

once again i find myself agreeing with lander. my nephew who turned 6, 5 days before xmas was diagnosed with JDF at 14 MONTHS OLD! unlike lander - my nephew has a "pump" into his butt that helps - and doesn't need to get shots. but like lander - my nephew has to have his blood checked numerous times a day. he just started 1st grade this past september. my sister can't go get a job because EVERY school day she has to drop him off at school - then come back later and take his blood - then come back later and pick him up. he goes thru mood swings based on his sugar level, too. my cousin got married in august and my nephew was in the wedding party - but because he had been running around all day - when the reception came around - he was really irritable - and couldn't go to the reception. i love the little guy to death and would do just about anything for him. the whole family donates to JDF because of him.

what lander also left out is that a great many people with diabetes end up losing a limb of some sort - usually a leg has to get amputated later in life.
