Almost everywhere you look, the left is in ruins. Of the 27 countries of the European Union, only a handful have left-of-center parties leading government coalitions. The primary left-of-center party in the European Parliament now has just 136 seats in a 720-seat chamber. Even in countries that have been able to stem the rise of right-wing populism, such as Poland, it is the center-right that is thriving, not the left. And in the United States, of course, the breadth of Donald Trump's victory -- nearly 90 percent of U.S. counties moved right -- suggests that it is very much part of this trend.
The crisis of democratic government then, is actually a crisis of progressive government. People seem to feel that they have been taxed, regulated, bossed around and intimidated by left-of-center politicians for decades -- but the results are bad and have been getting worse.
New York, where I live, and Florida, where I often visit, provide an interesting contrast.
They have comparable populations -- New York with about 20 million people, Florida with 23 million. But New York state's budget is more than double that of Florida ($239 billion vs. roughly $116 billion). New York City, which is a little more than three times the size of Miami-Dade County, has a budget of more than $100 billion, which is nearly 10 times that of Miami-Dade. New York City's spending grew from 2012 to 2019 by 40 percent, four times the rate of inflation. Does any New Yorker feel that they got 40 percent better services during that time?

Online progressives and leftists attacked humanitarian activists Bono and chef Jose Andres for accepting the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Joe Biden on Saturday, claiming the pair were endorsing genocide.
Bono, the world-famous Irish frontman to the rock band U2, and Jose Andres, a Spain-born chef who has risen to prominence for his charity work with his World Central Kitchen program, were two of the 19 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor attainable in America, on Saturday.
While both celebrities have previously been on the receiving end of liberal praise for their charity and compassion, pro-Palestinian activists on X ripped them for appearing with President Biden amid what the activists claim is a presidency that has supported a genocide propagated by Israel.
“Biden is giving the award because Bono is the only Irish Catholic who doesn’t care at all about the Palestinians,” Jeet Heer, writer at the left-wing magazine The Nation, said on X.
Many of Bono’s own countrymen signaled their disdain for his actions.
“Irish rock star Bono shows 15 months of managing to ignore the Gaza Genocide really pays off,” one Irish blogger wrote.

Port strike averted — and the union credits Trump
The union’s statement, which did not mention President Joe Biden, serves as a last-minute embarrassment for the outgoing Democrat, who repeatedly called himself labor’s best friend.
In a separate statement, the head of the dockworkers union, Harold Daggett, heaped praise on Trump for helping smooth the way for a deal, saying Trump — who had criticized industry’s automation plans — “gets full credit.” He cited the president-elect’s public support for the labor group after a meeting late last year.
“President Trump’s bold stance helped prevent a second coast wide strike at ports from Maine to Texas,” Daggett, the head of the International Longshoremen’s Association, said
Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director P.J. Lechleitner said in an interview that President Joe Biden should “absolutely” have acted sooner to tighten border security to reduce the flow of migrants into the United States.
Lechleitner, who became acting director in July 2023 and is preparing to leave the job this week before the new administration brings in its own appointee, told NBC News on Wednesday that the number of incoming migrants meant his agency had to give staff to help Customs and Border Protection, leaving ICE unable “to do our own core mission adequately.”
