The Judge is a hand gun that shoots .410 shotgun shells and .45 cal bullets. It's hard to beat for night stands. With that being said, if you want a gun you both can shoot occasionally, or if needed at home for self defense, then a revolver is gonna be hard to beat.

Go back to the range, rent 4-5 guns you think you like (Here it's $5 a gun, and if you buy, they'll give you credit for the amount of the rent. The 4 or 5 I've listed would be a great place to start). See which one you like the best, and what feels best to both of you. I would think a compact, or even subcompact, and a revolver will feel best if both are going to handle and shoot. I hope you find what you're looking for, and more importantly, feel safe and secure with it.

You can pick up a cheap shotgun and it wont freak your fiance out to shoot. Best defense against intruders. A revolver would be second best if the intention is for self defense. My girlfriend just didnt feel comfortable with the smith and wesson 9mm and just wants a revolver so she can just point and shoot. I am thinking 38 cal for the stopping power and really like the smith and wesson body guard model with built in laser site. Renting at the range is a great idea so you can find out what is best for you and your finance.

For the house specifically a good shotgun is the way to go. you can pick up a Maverick 88 for under $200 which is almost the same thing as a mossberg 500.
If you're intent on a handgun that is fun to shoot that you plan on taking to the range frequently then I'd go with a 9mm cause the ammo is cheaper. I personally have a Glock 19 in my nightstand and a shotgun within arms reach of the bed.
It also depends of the price range you're looking at. you'll find the glocks, kahr's, springfields, sigs are going to be more on the higher end, and for good reason, they are all great guns that are reliable.
If you want a good reliable gun you can pick up for like $300 then Ruger is pretty solid.
Personally, I live in florida where I spend 95% of my time in flip flops and board shorts so on a daily basis I usually carry around a Ruger LCP because its reliable and super small, light and concealable.

A few people already mentioned --- when selecting a gun, think about the ammo.

The more common the ammo, the cheaper it will be (and easier to find).

Also, on the off-chance of Doomsday/Zombie/Red Dawn scenario --- it would suck if you're looking around for goofy/obscure ammo.

I own a Taurus Judge. Excellent self-defense gun and certainly it would be a carjackers worst nightmare.

Damn. How old are you?

I'm not a big gun man even through I own five firearms. Jesus, I shot my
first 410 shotgun when I was five years old and I still have that gun.

Since Obama, I have purchased some potent firepower.

I love my Glock. But if you aren't familiar with guns just know that there's not a true safety on a Glock.

dont pull the trigger unless you want it to go bang......thats your safety. you can throw a loaded glock (live round in chamber) across the room, in the street, or from a moving car and it will not fire. Agree with most of what Matt says except for the Taurus. I would not trust a Taurus with my life its a poorly made firearm. If you want the a judge like weapon buy the S&W Governor. Shoots the 45 long colt or 410 and its an American made Smith and Wesson not a Brazilian made Taurus.

Haha, I actually don't like the Taurus brand either, and do not recommend it. I guess I was using the Judge as an example of the shotgun shells in a revolver, and highly recommend your mentioned Governor over the Judge.

hey mattymatt how does it work ordering a gun through that website?

Their shipping cost is included in the price. They would ship it to an authorized FFL Dealer (pawn shop or your range), and they will charge you a fee (normally $15-$30). The FFL Dealer will call your background check in, and you should walk with your pistol then and there. May take 1-2 days hold sometimes tops, though.

Which one do you think you like best?

I was interested in the first two you linked, might lean towards a 3 sight just because thats all we have shot. I think ill go with some of my more experienced friends a few more times before making my first purchase, just to get some more practice in with different guns to form a better opinion
