A poor showing sets the trend for the season. Can teams overcome a poor Week 1 showing? Possibly, but few do. Most people will say that Ohio State did last season, but their loss came in week 2. Last years Power 5 Conference Week 1 losers included:
1. Arkansas, who lost to Auburn and had to rally at the end of the season to finish with a 7-6 record.
2. Clemson, who never recovered from a 24 point beating at Georgia and went on to a 9-3 record.
3. Colorado, who lost to rival Colorado State and finished the year at 2-12.
4. Miami, who lost to Louisville and finished a disappointing 6-7.
5. Northwestern, a 31-24 loser to Cal. The Cat's finished 5-7.
6. Oklahoma State, who lost to Florida State in week 1 and rallied to finish 7-6.
7. South Carolina, who lost to Texas A&M in week 1 and ended up at 7-6, the worst finish in years for them.
8. Vanderbilt, a 37-7 loser to Temple in week 1 on their way to a 3-9 season.
9. Virginia, a loser to UCLA in week 1 en route to as 5-7 season.
10. Wake Forest, who lost to UL Monroe and finished at 3-9.
11. Washington State, who lost to Rutgers and finished at 3-9.
12. West Virginia, a loser to Alabama, finished at 7-6.
So out of these 12 Power 5 teams, only one ends up with a record better than 7-6, and 7 end up under .500. Most Power 5 teams schedule cream puffs to open the season, so there are not a lot of teams on this list, but the ones who made it, certainly did not have banner years.
