Wednesday Bonus Play 8:15 PM MLB

(925) BOSTON RED SOX at (926) ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

Take: (925) BOSTON RED SOX +120

The Red Sox are in play out the string mode for the rest of this season. That’s a tough deal for a team that is the reigning World Series champ. But unlike last season, when almost everything broke just right for the Red Sox, it’s been a Murphy’s Law type of campaign this time around.

I don’t see much chance that Boston will forge a winning record over the final two months of the season. They just aren’t a good baseball team right now, and it’s very clear that the internal process right now is focused on getting the team back to contender status in 2015.

Consequently, this is a Red Sox team where there will have to be something compelling to make them bet worthy. I think we have such a scenario tonight as they duel the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. It’s kind of a hello and goodbye at the same time for Joe Kelly. Kelly was moved to Boston in the John Lackey deal last week. Now he goes back home for one more start, only this time as a member of the visiting squad.

I have to think Kelly will want this win about as badly as he’s ever wanted one. Players generally don’t like getting traded, and I can’t imagine Kelly was thrilled to have to trade in the uniform of the only organization he’s played for. So this is a payback spot for Kelly, as you know he’s going to want to send a message to his former squad. It sure doesn’t that Kelly has pitched well for the most part in this ballpark.

Shelby Miller will throw for the Redbirds, and it’s anyone’s guess as to which Miller appears on the mound tonight. The charts would favor the not so good Miller, as overall this has been a very difficult season for the righty. But Miller has also had some games where he’s been able to locate his stuff, and when his command is good, so are his results.

Neither of these teams is doing much with the sticks, so chances are this is going to come down to the arms. That’s actually a good thing for the Red Sox, as they appear almost incapable of winning any shootouts right now. I made this number Cardinals -120, but that’s strictly off the data. Add in what I feel is a favorable situation for Kelly, and I’ll make a case there’s enough value here to justify backing the Red Sox for one night.

MLB (921) HOUSTON ASTROS VS (922) PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES 7:05 PM EST

Take: (921) HOUSTON ASTROS

Reason: Your free pick for Wednesday, August 6th, 2014, comes in baseball as the Astros and Phillies meet in Philadelphia. Houston is playing hard and playing well, having a nice run the last six days. The Astros are 38-17 in their last 55 interleague games as a favorite of -110 to -150. Houston starter Brad Peacock faces a terrible Philadelphia offense, 23rd in runs scored, 27th in on base percentage and 28th in slugging. The Phillies are 9-26 in their last 35 interleague games, 4-10 in their last 14 home games. Philadelphia is 1-2 in the last three starts made by David Buchanan (4.40 ERA). Houston may have a losing record overall, but the Phillies are 2-7 in their last 9 interleague home games vs. a team with a losing record. Play Houston.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Los Angeles Angels

1* Bonus Play on the LA Angels -144

As the battle of LA shifts to the Angels’ ballpark, I think the value is with the Halos tonight. The Dodgers will go with struggling starter Dan Haren (8-9, 4.76 ERA); Haren was shelled on Friday, surrendering six earned runs to the Cubs in just 4 1/3’s innings. Loser of five in a row, he's seen his ERA go through the roof after starting off the season nicely. Note that against the Angels Haren is a poor 3-6 life-time with a 3.75 ERA in 11 games started; and note that on the road, Haren is 4-6 with a pedestrian 5.40 ERA this year. The Angels counter with Matt Shoemaker (9-3, 4.07 ERA) who has won two straight starts and four of five overall. Note that Shoemaker has excelled at Angel stadium this season in posting a 5-2 record with a 2.84 ERA. LA is 38-19 on home field this year and is playing well lately, helped by a very strong bullpen. And that’s bad news for the Dodgers who are 0-3 as the underdog in the +125 to +150 range this season. Consider taking the Angels.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Los Angeles Angels

Free #MLB play on the Los Angeles Angels -146

The Halos have to be happy with a split after facing Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw at Chavez Ravine the last two nights. They head back to Anaheim with what looks like a more favorable match-up in starting pitching Wednesday.
Dan Haren will toe the slab for the visitors, and he's been just brutal for more than a month. Haren (8-9, 4.76 ERA) was torched for seven runs on eight hits over just 4 1/ innings in a home loss to the Cubs his last time out. He's lost five straight, and he has an ERA over 10.00 during that span.
The Halos hand the ball to Matt Shoemaker, who has been decent in recent starts. Shoemaker (9-3, 4.09 ERA) has won back to back starts, allowing three runs on 11 hits through 12 innings in wins over Tampa and Detroit. His numbers in Anaheim are quite impressive, going 5-2 with a 2.84 ERA in 11 appearances. He will likely have plenty of margin for error opposite the struggling Haren tonight.

Kansas City Royals vs. Arizona Diamondbacks

Bonus Play Kansas City Royals -125

The Royals are quietly making a run at the wild card spot in the AL. They’ve won 10 of their last 13 and won 12-2 against the D’Backs yesterday. Offense has been the biggest struggle for this team all year long but they’ve put up 39 hits in their last 3 games. They’ve also been playing well on the road, so with the D’Backs having absolutely no home field advantage, this one sets up as a good “spot.” KC’s offense most likely won’t stay hot for a long period, but with the way they are hitting right now this team is definitely worth riding.

Pitching is one of the strong points of the Royals as a collective unit. Yordano Ventura is back to his dominant form after allowing only 1 earned run last start against the Twins. He’s put together a string of good starts and this is the first time that Arizona will have seen him, a sure advantage. The hard throwing flamethrower is dominant when his command is on, and things seem to be clicking for him right now.

The overrated Josh Collmenter takes the hill for the Snakes. Collmenter is a guy who throws straight as a line with low velocity. He’s been up and down the last couple of weeks, putting together a few quality outings with some poor ones. He’s not the worst pitcher in the world, but a significant advantage is directed towards Ventura. The Royals also have an offensive advantage with the way they are currently swinging the sticks. Throw in the fact that the D’Backs best player, Paul Goldschmidt, is on the shelf, and this price seems to be cheap. Take the Royals.

Detroit Tigers vs. New York Yankees

FREE PICK New York Yankees +120

Detroit and New York have split one run games on Monday and Tuesday. The Tigers go with Justin Verlander and the team is just 13-10 in his starts. His ERA is 4.66 this year and he has been hittable. The Yankees have a decent hitting lineup with experience as Jeter, Ellsbury, Beltran, McCan and Suzuki have all been all-stars. The Tigers are a great team but this game is at Yankee Stadium and the home team is still in the race for the playoffs.

Boston Red Sox vs. St. Louis Cardinals

Bonus Play Boston Red Sox +125

I'm recommending a play on the Red Sox on Wednesday night. It's a battle of former Cardinal teammates tonight with Boston's newly acquired hurler Joe Kelly taking on ex-mate, Shelby Miller. Kelly owns terrific marks at Busch Stadium and now faces a St. Louis lineup averaging just 3.47 rpg since the all-star break. I believe his old lineup will be "just what the doctor ordered" for Kelly to get back on track. And while the Cardinals are on a 0-5 slide when Miller toes the home rubber, the Sox have won four straight as an IL underdog and they're on a 42-18 run on the IL road against right-handed starters. Shelby Miller has looked shaky in five of his last six home starts and back-to-back wins on the road against the Padres and Cubs are not "buy signs" as far as I'm concerned. Yoenis Cespedes finally looked comfortable in last night's game, producing a 3-hit contest and he could be an offensive difference maker in this one. I'm backing the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.

Chicago Cubs vs. Colorado Rockies

Wednesday MLB Bonus Play Take #907 Chicago Cubs -112 over Colorado Rockies (Wednesday, 8:40pm EST)

The season can’t end soon enough for the Colorado Rockies. Injuries have ravished this team throughout 2014, but that’s not the only problem. The Rockies are 21-51 over their last 72 games, which is far and away the worst mark in the majors since early May. The going got tough and this team just decided to give up. They still have a decent roster despite the injuries, but the team chemistry is lacking and these guys appear to just be collecting their paychecks. With nearly two months still remaining in the regular season, the Rockies are going to continue to be a team worthy of fading. They’ll take on the Chicago Cubs, who are on the other end of the spectrum. They aren’t going anywhere this season, but they’re starting to bring up some of their young minor league talent and that is likely to spark the team. Highly-touted Javier Baez is the latest call-up and he’s a top-10 rated prospect in all of the baseball. The Cubs ace Jake Arrieta gets the ball in this matchup and he’s been one of the best pitchers in the NL this season. With a 2.11 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 16 starts, he’s certainly flying under the radar a bit. He’ll face a Colorado lineup that is missing Troy Tulowitzki and Michael Cuddyer, and Carlos Gonzalez is also banged up. The Rockies counter with Jordan Lyles on the hill. Lyles is making his first start off of the disabled list, where he has shelved for two months with a hand injury. Lyles has good numbers on the 2014 campaign, but it’s difficult to ask much of him in his first start back. The Rockies bullpen hasn’t been pretty recently, so the Cubs should be able to do some damage here. And with Arrieta going, this one could be over quickly. Take Chicago as our Bonus Play selection.

Cleveland Indians vs. Cincinnati Reds

Wednesday 5* MLB Bonus Play Cleveland Indians -102

Danny Salazar has not exactly set the world on fire this season. More often than not he has been good but he just doesn’t work deep into game the way you would like.

Still he has not given up more than 3ER in any of his last 7 starts and I like him being able to navigate a Reds lineup with no DH and no Joey Votto and no Brandon Phillips. Mat Latos goes for the Reds and he is more than capable but his home ERA balloons up to 4.74.

Good Luck, Razor Ray

Boston Red Sox vs. St. Louis Cardinals

FREE PREMIUM GAME WINNER

BOSTON RED SOX +143

Today's free winner is the Boston Red Sox. We are laying the money on this under dog for the outright win. The Red Sox are 4-2 against the Cardinals over the last 3 seasons. The Cardinals will start Miller who is 3-5 at home this year. The Red Sox will counter with Kelly, who knows this team very well. Kelly just got traded from the Cardinals to the Red Sox, and I love games like this. I'm expecting Kelly to get some revenge, and pull the outright win. The Red Sox are the better team, and shouldn't be laying this much juice. I talked to my Wiseguy buddies in New York, and we are on the same page. Lay the money, and get paid.... Thank You
