The Colorado Rockies showed character in the series opener and look to strengthen their hold on a wild-card spot in the National League when they host the New York Mets on Wednesday for the middle contest of their three-game set. Colorado began its six-game homestand with a see-saw battle on Tuesday that resulted in a walk-off victory thanks to Nolan Arenado's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The heroics by Arenado, who finished with four RBIs to raise his major league-leading total to 95, helped give the Rockies a one-half game lead over Arizona for the first wild card. Carlos Gonzalez carries a 10-game hitting streak into Wednesday's contest after forging a 4-4 tie with an RBI single in the eighth inning of the opener. New York fell to 3-5 on its 10-game road trip with Monday's setback but got a look at one of its top prospects in Amed Rosario. The 21-year-old Dominican was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas and went 1-for-4 while starting at shortstop in his major-league debut.
TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Colorado)
PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Chris Flexen (0-1, 9.00 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Tyler Chatwood (6-11, 4.78)
Flexen made his major-league debut on Thursday at San Diego but lasted only three innings. The 23-year-old Californian took the loss after surrendering four runs - three earned - on five hits and four walks. Flexen has split the season between Single-A St. Lucie and Double-A Binghamton, going a combined 6-1 with two complete games, one shutout and a 1.76 ERA in 10 starts.
Chatwood is coming off his first relief appearance of the season, a one-inning effort at St. Louis last Wednesday in which he yielded one run on one hit and a pair of walks. The 27-year-old, who also hails from the Golden State, has suffered four losses over six starts since last winning on June 8 against the Cubs in Chicago. Chatwood looks to avenge a setback in New York on July 15 - his first in four career decisions - in which he surrendered four runs on one hit - a homer - and three walks while retiring just one batter before exiting with a strained right calf.
WALK-OFFS
1. Rockies C Jonathan Lucroy, who was acquired from Texas on Sunday, was slated to make his team debut and bat eighth on Monday but was scratched due to a stomach illness.
2. In addition to Rosario, New York recalled RHP Chasen Bradford from Las Vegas and optioned SS Matt Reynolds to the 51s while sending OF Juan Lagares to Binghamton for a rehab assignment.
3. Colorado optioned C Tony Wolters, who posted a .248 average with 14 RBIs in 67 games this season, to Triple-A Albuquerque and released RHP Jordan Lyles after he went 0-2 with a 6.94 ERA in 33 relief appearances.
PREDICTION: Rockies 11, Mets 6
