Bonus Play Wednesday

541 ARIZONA STATE at 542 UNLV 10:00 M

Take: UNLV -5

This is what I’d call a very big game for UNLV. They have a huge road test coming up at Arizona, but the reality is that’s going to be a very tough game to win. Therefore, it’s really incumbent upon the Runnin’ Rebels to make sure they come away with a victory tonight against ASU.

Dave Rice needs to get the Rebels to the NCAA Tournament this season, or else the chances of his returning as head coach for another season will at least be in jeopardy. UNLV is not the favorite to win the Mountain West, so their route to the Dance is very likely via the at-large route. That makes winning these non-league games of paramount importance.

UNLV has a couple of nice wins under their belts, as they got past an okay Indiana team as well as a solid Oregon entry. That win against the Ducks was a really good one. But near misses against UCLA and Wichita State won’t do them any good, and with a probable loss at Arizona coming up, they absolutely need to approach tonight’s game with a must-win attitude.

It’s not a bad matchup at all for the Rebs. They should enjoy a size advantage in the paint and they’re at least as athletic as the Sun Devils. For what it’s worth, even though many of the names and faces have changed, UNLV might well have played its single worst 20 minutes of the entire Rice regime last season at ASU. The Rebels were beyond dismal in a disastrous 40-18 second half smashing absorbed courtesy of the Sun Devils.

The UNLV free throw shooting is always a concern so it would behoove the Rebels to put as much distance as they can between themselves and Arizona State if they have the opportunity. The number is not cheap in terms of the overall power ratings of these two teams. But I’m going to ask for UNLV to come up big tonight and I’ll side with the Rebels to come through with an important win this evening.

(705) HOUSTON ROCKETS VS (706) SACRAMENTO KINGS

Take: Over the total

Reason: Your Bonus Play for Tuesday, December 15, 2015 is in the NBA scheduled contest between the Houston Rockets and the Kings in Sacramento. The Houston Rockets have plenty of offensive talent and are the No. 7 seed in the West turning things around. They reached .500 on Saturday night with an easy 126-97 win over the Los Angeles Lakers behind 30 points from James Harden. The Rockets are 5-0-1 over the total against a team with a losing straight up record. They are also 5-1 over the total playing on no days rest and face a dysfunctional Sacramento squad that is 29th in points allowed, 25th in field goal shooting defense. Sacramento is well rested, 4-1 over the total playing on 3 or more days rest. When these teams meet the over is 4-0, including 15-6 over the total in the last 21 meetings in Sacramento. Play Houston/Sacramento Over the total.

Suns vs Warriors

5* NBA Free Pick Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors had their amazing winning streak come to an as the Milwaukee Bucks handed them a 108-95 defeat Saturday. That game marked the end of a nasty two week road trip which saw the Dubs play seven consecutive road-games, and they've now had three days of rest home in Cali. They're 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games playing on three or more days rest and 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 games overall. The Phoenix Suns have just three wins through their last nine game and lost 104-94 at Dallas Monday. They're 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games playing on one day of rest and 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games overall. The Suns allowed a season-high 135 points in a 19-point home defeat to the Warriors on Nov. 27, and I think they'll be the victim of another big Warriors performance tonight.

Blazers vs Thunder

5* Free Pick Oklahoma City Thunder

The Trail Blazers are off a 105-101 win against the Pelicans, but they're likely to struggle at road at Oklahoma City tonight. They're 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up win and only 2-9-1 ATS in their last 12 road games vs. a team with a winning home record. The Thunder have a 11-3 home-record and off 5 straight wins overall. Kevin Durant had 31 points in Sunday's 104-98 OT win over Utah and point guard Russell Westbrook is averaging 24 points over his last three games. The Trail Blazers are 2-5 ATS in the last 7 meetings in Oklahoma City.

Suns vs. Warriors

Bonus Play Under

I'm recommending a play on the Under between the Suns & Warriors on Wednesday night. Golden State returns home from their lengthy 7-game road trip that ended with their first loss of the season following a 24-0 start. Before the loss, the Warriors had played to the Over in seven straight games. But this number opened with a higher total than all but one of their previous 25 games this season. The last time the Warriors played to a total of 220 or more, (this one opened 220), they finished with a low scoring 103-94 win over Sacramento. And while GST whipped Phoenix 135-116 on November 27, tonight's total opened two baskets higher than the closing total in that contest. The Suns are not too hot on the defensive end, but they have also grown inconsistent on the offensive end of late, scoring 96 points or less in three of their last last six games. Brandon Knight has been about as hot and cold as it gets. Finally, going back to last season, when Golden State is off a SU loss, they usually turn it up on the defensive end. The Warriors are 5-0 to the Under off their last five SU losses and 8-2 to the Under the last 10 times. The Warriors held those 10 opponents to just 93.5 ppg. I expect more of the same. I'm recommending a play on the Under between the Suns & Warriors on Wednesday. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.
