Bonus Play Wednesday

JAZZ at PISTONS 7:35 PM

Take: JAZZ -1.5

The Detroit Pistons came roaring out of the NBA starting gate with a convincing road win against Atlanta. The Motowners were in command most of the way and while it’s only one game, those who believe Stan Van Gundy has this team pointed in the right direction can pat themselves on the back.

Utah is one of the teams I’m somewhat high on for the new season. The Jazz will have to get it down without Dante Exum, who’s out for the season. But everyone else that matters is back.

I’m banking on the Jazz picking up where they left off late last season. Utah was very impressive down the stretch, posting a 19-10 record after the All-Star break, and also putting up the best defensive stats in the league. That commitment from a team that had no shot at all to make the playoffs spoke volumes about the commitment on the part of the players. Now that they’re starting with a clean slate, I’m looking for the Jazz to be all about the intensity necessary to compete in the rugged Western Conference.

The Pistons have a bit of a scheduling disadvantage here. It’s not huge as weary legs don’t figure to be an issue for any team this early in the season. But I’d still rather have the rested team vs. the one that played the prior night. Add in the fact the number is cheap because the game is at Detroit, and I see a reasonably advantageous situation for the visitors. I’ll try the Jazz minus the small spot for tonight’s free play.

(727) MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES VS (728) LOS ANGELES LAKERS

Take: Over the total

Reason: Your Bonus Play for Wednesday, October 28, 2015 is a total in the NBA as Minnesota heads to the Staples Center out West to play the Lakers in Los Angeles. Minnesota has talent on offense and likes to run with Ricky Rubio, Kevin Martin and former No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins. Thy add 2014-15 Euroleague MVP Nemanja Bjelica, a 6-10 "point forward". Minnesota is on a 5-2 run over the total on the road and the over is 4-1 in the Timberwolves last 5 games playing on 3 or more days rest. Lakers coach Byron Scott doesn't care much for defense and has more offensive talent to work with than defensive forces. Roy Hibbert was dumped by the Pacers for next to nothing, and now he's trying to revive his career in a contract season. LA is on a 4-1 run over the total, including 24-8-2 over the total playing on 3 or more days rest. Play Minnesota/LA Lakers over the total.

Philadelphia 76ers vs Boston Celtics

Bonus Play Boston Celtics

The 76ers opened last season with 17 straight losses. They could exceed that figure this season. Yep, the 76ers are that bad again. Worse, the 76ers are already in tank mode.
Philadelphia coach Brett Brown all but admitted his top early priority isn't game planning, but getting his young team to study and learn more. Nobody in the 76ers' rotation is older than 24.
The 76ers are one of the most banged-up teams in the NBA. They could have just nine healthy bodies depending on the status of Nik Stauskas, who is a game-time decision.
Out are Robert Covington and Tony Wroten - two of Philadelphia's four best players - along with Kendall Marshall and Carl Landry. Joel Embiid is sidelined indefinitely, too. Stauskas, a shooting guard, would be rusty even if he plays having missed preseason.
Having that many players out would be rough on any team, but it's especially bad for the 76ers, whose bench is one of the least talented in the league.
The Celtics are well-coached. They also play hard for Brad Stevens. They aren't going to take the 76ers lightly with their next two games being at home against Toronto on Friday and San Antonio on Sunday.
The Celtics swept the 76ers last season winning four games by an average of 14.7 points. All of the victories were by 11 or more points.
Boston should be improved even more this season. The Celtics have more experience, too, with the additions of big men David Lee and Amir Johnson.
The Celtics also have greatly upgraded their depth. They are one of the deepest teams in the NBA with many of their starters interchangeable from their bench players. So the 76ers always will be at a disadvantage even during garbage time.
The Celtics won all but one of their preseason games. They ranked No. 2 in efficiency. The 76ers were 28th in efficiency during preseason. The two teams met this past Friday in Manchester, N.H. and the Celtics won, 81-65.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs Memphis Grizzlies

Bonus Play Memphis Grizzlies

I'm recommending a play on the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night. The Cavaliers were much better at the end of last night's 97-95 loss in Chicago than they were in the opening quarter, when they scored just 17 points. But wins are not as important as divvying up minutes right now, according to their coach. That's a change for David Blatt and he showed last night it was more than preseason talk. Blatt recently said that rest, recovery, and limiting minutes was the plan for the regular season. Last night the Cavs used 11 players by the end of the second quarter and not a single player saw more than 37 minutes of action for the game. The Cavaliers whipped the Grizzlies in both meetings last season, which will help motivate Memphis out of the blocks, in my opinion. The Cavs also won't have Kyrie Irving or Iman Shumpert, who're both out indefinitely. Meanwhile, Memphis didn't have Zach Randolph for one of last year's two meetings. I like the additions made by Memphis in the off-season, getting a little tougher and a little deeper, and I do believe the new faces will make a big contribution tonight. With Blatt going deep down his bench and with the Grizzlies pumped to get out of the blocks with a bang, I'm recommending a play on Memphis minus the points. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.
