Preview: Astros (86-76) at Royals (95-67)

Game: 5
Venue: Ewing M. Kauffman Stadium
Date: October 14, 2015 8:07 PM EDT

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) The Royals traded away three top prospects to acquire Johnny Cueto for the playoffs, even though his winning pedigree has been established almost entirely in the regular season.

He'll have an opportunity to change that Wednesday night.

The right-hander with the creative cadre of deliveries will take the mound for Kansas City in Game 5 of the AL Division Series against the Astros. The Royals forced the decider at Kauffman Stadium by rallying from a four-run deficit in the eighth inning Monday at Houston.

The Astros will counter with Collin McHugh, who threw a gem in winning the series opener.

'Obviously this is the deciding game,' Cueto said through a translator after the Royals worked out Tuesday afternoon. 'We either win and stay or you go home.'

Cueto has long been considered one of the game's dynamic pitchers, his herky-jerky style often giving hitters fits. He was an All-Star a year ago with Cincinnati, and finished second in Cy Young voting in the National League, a big reason the Royals were so keen to get him.

But when it comes to the playoffs, things have been a struggle. Cueto is 0-2 with a 5.52 ERA in four postseason starts, including a pedestrian outing in Game 2 against Houston.

While he retired 12 of the final 14 hitters he faced, Cueto also gave up four runs on seven hits and three walks in just six innings. It took the Kansas City hitters and some solid innings from his bullpen to get no decision in a 5-4 victory that evened the series.

Cueto acknowledged his looming free agency has been on his mind, but he also said there are no excuses if he fails to live up to expectations on Wednesday night.

'The fact of the matter is, I have to focus on pitching here and performing for this club and this organization,' he said. 'Thank God, the most important thing is I feel good. I feel healthy. And that gives me an opportunity to have success.'

The Royals have won nine of their past 10 elimination games, and now have momentum on their side. Their rousing comeback to force the series back to Kansas City drew comparisons to their comeback against Oakland in last year's wild-card game, when they dug out of a similar four-run hole in the eighth inning against Jon Lester and the A's.

The young, almost naive bunch of guys in the Kansas City clubhouse kept riding that momentum all the way to Game 7 of the World Series, where they finally lost to San Francisco.

'One thing this team does very well, every game we play, we just go out and play our game,' Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer said. 'We stick to our game, no matter the situation.'

The situation right now? Solving a pitcher who shut them down less than a week ago.

McHugh allowed two runs - both on homers by Kendrys Morales - and six hits over six innings against the Royals in Game 1, shrugging off a 49-minute rain delay in the process. With a vicious slider and unflappable confidence, he calmly took care of a potent Kansas City lineup.

That placid demeanor was still there Tuesday, 24 hours from the biggest start of his career.

'I don't know how I come off to other people,' McHugh said. 'It's always interesting. I have to ask my wife a lot how I look to other people. She usually gives me honest feedback.'

While he may not be as recognizable as Cueto, the right-hander who bounced through the Mets and Rockies systems before landing in Houston has been every bit as tough. He won 19 games during the regular season, and has won his last six decisions overall.

In fact, when Houston manager A.J. Hinch was asked whether he could use star pitcher Dallas Keuchel on three days' rest in relief, he replied: 'Not if McHugh pitches the whole game.'

Clearly, the Astros aren't lacking any confidence after their Game 4 meltdown.

While they would have preferred not having to board a plane back to Kansas City, they seemed to be taking it in stride, laughing and joking their way through a light workout.

'I know pouting and being negative and dwelling on the past is not going not help us,' Hinch said. 'We're in Game 5 of the division series with a chance to control our own destiny. It can't get any better than that.'

Astros call on McHugh on Game 5
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

Collin McHugh gets the start for the Houston Astros with their postseason fate on the line Wednesday in Game 5 of the American League Division Series against the Kansas City Royals.

McHugh went 19-7 during the regular season. He has not absorbed a loss since Aug. 20, and he was the winning pitcher against the Royals in Game 2.

"McHugh is going to start Game 5, so he'll be ready to go," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. "I'll have everyone available in Game 5 that you would expect. Including (Scott) Kazmir."

The Royals will counter with their key midseason acquisition, right-hander Johnny Cueto, who is 2-6 since Aug. 15, not including his loss in Game 2.

However, Cueto will have the home crowd on his side as well as the knowledge that his team is feeling awfully good after the Monday comeback.

"Hopefully we can just keep this riding into Game 5," said Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer, who broke out his postseason slump with two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs on Monday.

Hinch expects his team to rebound from Monday's disappointment, and he is happy there is an off day Tuesday, which may give his young team time to recover.

"We have just as good a chance to win Game 5 as the Royals," he said. "And we're going to hop on a plane, go work out tomorrow, and we're going to show up ready to play in Game 5. It's going to be an electric atmosphere in Kauffman Stadium.

"But it's big-boy sport. We'll adjust, and we will be ready to play."

Hinch said he does not need a rousing pep talk to get his team ready.

"They don't need to be told that this was a tough loss. They don't need to be told that Game 5's a big game," he said. "We will show up with our personality. We're going to give it everything we have to continue the season, as is the club across the way."

Hosmer knows his team has momentum on its side, but that only goes so far.

"The way that Houston's playing right now, these guys are playing lights-out ball," Hosmer said. "They're a young, energetic team."

ALDS Doubleheader Betting Preview: Rangers at Blue Jays, Astros at Royals

Texas Rangers at Toronto Blue Jays (-181, 8.0)

The Toronto Blue Jays did not fare well in their first two home playoff games in 22 years, but their success on the road is giving them another chance. The Blue Jays will have homefield advantage when they host the Texas Rangers in a decisive Game 5 of the American League Division Series on Wednesday.

The Rangers went into Toronto and shocked the Blue Jays with wins in the first two games of the series but could not take care of business at home and now need to come up with a third win on the road. “Look, we're still playing, we're still playing. We've got another game to play,” Texas manager Jeff Banister told reporters. “… There's no quit in this ballclub. No quit in any one of those players in that locker room.” The Blue Jays’ surge over the last two games coincided directly with a return of the power that highlighted the offense during the regular season, beginning with Troy Tulowitzki’s key homer in Game 3 and continuing with three more blasts in Monday’s 8-4 triumph in Game 4. “You know, we've been good at home all year,” Toronto manager John Gibbons told reporters. “We didn't get those two games there, we didn't play particularly well necessarily, but that's where we're best.”

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers LH Cole Hamels (0-0, 2.57 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Marcus Stroman (0-0, 3.86)

Hamels was acquired at the trade deadline with the hope that he would pitch in some big moments for the team, and the former World Series MVP will get a second chance to earn his first postseason win for Texas. Hamels allowed four runs (two earned) over seven innings in Game 2 without factoring in the decision and has not lost since Aug. 7. The California native surrendered two or fewer earned runs in four of his last five starts going back to the regular season.

Game 1 starter David Price was forced into relief duty in Game 4 and threw 50 pitches, leaving Game 5 for Stroman to start. The 24-year-old went up against Hamels in Game 2 and was charged with four runs (three earned) and five hits in seven frames but was also held out of the decision in a game that lasted 14 innings. Stroman has yet to lose in 2015 and allowed six or fewer hits in each of his five starts since coming back from a knee injury.

Houston Astros at Kansas City Royals (-131, 7.5)

The Houston Astros had the American League Division Series wrapped up before melting down late in Game 4 and now have to head back out on the road. The Kansas City Royals will try to carry over the momentum that saw them score seven runs in the final two innings on Monday when they host Wednesday’s decisive Game 5.

The Astros took a 6-2 lead into the eighth inning on Monday before an error by rookie shortstop Carlos Correa and a string of hits contributed to a five-run frame as the Royals took the lead. “The thing about this club is that they don't quit,” Kansas City manager Ned Yost told reporters. “They don't. And after giving up three runs there in the bottom of the seventh, they came in on fire. Again, like they do. ‘Come on, let's go, good at-bats, let's start it moving.’” Houston plans on having just about every pitcher available for Game 5 except for Game 4 starter Lance McCullers, and feels confident about its ability to bounce back. “We have just as good a chance to win Game 5 as the Royals,” Astros manager A.J. Hinch told reporters. “And we're going to hop on a plane, go work out (Tuesday), and we're going to show up ready to play in Game 5.”

TV: 8:07 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Collin McHugh (1-0, 3.00 ERA) vs. Royals RH Johnny Cueto (0-0, 6.00)

McHugh grabbed the win in Game 1 while allowing two runs and four hits in six innings. The 28-year-old yielded a pair of solo home runs to Kendrys Morales in the contest but had little trouble with the rest of the Kansas City lineup despite having to sit through a rain delay in the second inning that lasted nearly an hour. McHugh is 7-0 in his last eight starts and allowed two or fewer earned runs in five of those outings.

Cueto has not been everything for which the Royals hoped since being acquired from the Cincinnati Reds prior to the trade deadline and was reached for four runs on seven hits and three walks in six innings without factoring in the decision in Game 2. The Dominican Republic native and impending free agent allowed opponents a .307 batting average in 13 regular-season starts with Kansas City and put his team in an early hole in Game 2 by allowing all four runs in the first three innings. Cueto is 0-2 with a 5.52 ERA in four career postseason starts.

'Decisive Game-5'

Blue Jays on the endangered spicies list after dropping the the first two games of this best-of-five series north of the border strormed back with a pair of victories in Texas forcing a decisive Game-5 Wednesday afternoon at the Rogers Center. Marcus Stroman carrying a 4-0 record, 1.67 ERA over five starts (4-1 TSR) toes the rubber for John Gibbons' crew. Rangers countering with left-hander Cole Hamels (13-8, 3.65 ERA) sets up a pitching rematch of the Game-2 which Rangers won in fourteen innings.

In that contest neither pitcher factored in the decision with Stroman tossing seven innings of 4 run ball on 5 hits with 2 BB, 5 K while Hamels chucked 7 innings of 4 runs with no walks, 6 strikes. Blue Jays rediscovering their power stroke in Texas smacking 21 hits, 4 jacks 13 runs are -$1.80 to -$2.00 faves in their own park.

Bonus Play Wednesday

ASTROS (McHugh) @ ROYALS (Cueto) 8:05 PM

Take: ASTROS F5 +115

The Houston Astros were in great shape to close out the defending AL champion Royals on Monday. Up 6-2 in the eighth inning, the governor of Texas was already tweeting congratulations. That was a big mistake, as everyone should know it’s not over till it’s over.

Now the Astros are in the unenviable position of having to rebound from a demoralizing loss, and they’ll have to do so on enemy turf. That’s not going to be easy, especially against a team like the Royals who simply have no quit in them whatsoever.

However, I don’t expect this Houston team to simply roll over and submit. They’re a very talented young squad and the fact they’ve had 48 or so hours to get it together should be a plus.

I give Collin McHugh an edge over Johnny Cueto on the mound. McHugh has just kept winning all season. Cueto might well be one of the best pitchers in the game, but he sure hasn’t been close to that since joining the Royals. Cueto has been very hittable, and while it’s small sample to be sure, let’s just say his rep as a big game pitcher is not the best.

The Houston offense has been productive throughout this set. They’ve scored at least four runs in each of the four previous games, and they’ve had the lead in each battle as well. I don’t see why that won’t be the case again today. If Cueto suddenly relocates his top shelf stuff and blows them away, so be it. I simply don’t believe that’s likely.

Nevertheless, I only want to play the first half prop in this game. If this is close late, it’s advantage KC on two big counts. One is that the team simply does not get discouraged when playing from behind. They’ve rallied too many times over the past two post-seasons to ever be considered toast.

Secondly, there’s the specter of Wade Davis pitching two innings if necessary. Simply stated, Wade Davis is the best relief pitcher in baseball right now. So in effect, the Astros have to get ahead early to have much of a shot late. I don’t have confidence in the Houston bullpen at this point, and I can tell you that if the Royals are down one or two runs late, they might well warrant consideration as a live action play.

So my take here will be on the early portion of this monster game. I believe the Astros will again manage to get a lead as they have in each of the prior games played and I like the idea of grabbing a little plus money with the Houston side to win the first five innings option.

(933) HOUSTON ASTROS VS (934) KANSAS CITY ROYALS

Take: Over the total

Reason: Your Bonus Play for Wednesday, October 14th, 2015 is in the MLB contest between the Astros and the Royals in Kansas City. Houston has power on offense, a great home run hitting team. Starter Collin McHugh has been great at home (12-3) but has a 4.05 ERA on the road. Kansas City can beat you with speed on the base paths and power. Starter Johnny Cueto has been an enigma since coming to the AL, not knowing the league or the hitters and it has thrown him off his game. Cueto gave up four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five over six innings against the Astros on Friday in Game 2 of the ALDS. He did not factor in the decision in the Royals' 5-4 win. Cueto dug the Royals an early hole, allowing Houston to score in each of the first three innings. He has allowed 4, 1, 3, 3, 2, 7, 5, 4, 6 and 6 runs his last 10 starts. Play the Astros/Royals Over the total.
