It is a copout to immediately compare the Sanders platform to Cuba/Venezuela government. When people do that, they miss the point that the type of socialism that he advocates is the Nordic country model.
However, there are numerous flaws with thinking you can export that political system to the US.
The US is a melting pot, the Nordic countries have mostly homogeneous populations that share the same cultural values, hard work and same religion. There is more of a shared sacrifice in general. You can't export that form of government without exporting culture and all their laws. Different governments work in different places.
They don't have close to the immigration issues we do, people don't live like slobs, college isn't a 4 year country club, healthcare system doesn't produce the innovations that our system does, etc
I could go on and on, but it is a fairy tale to think you could bring that here. And their success isn't based on that anyway, the strong safety net is a byproduct of other reasons. Most of the growth in those countries happened before implementing those social programs. Not to mention they don't defend half the world.
It works with small populations of the right kinda people, but I don't think it is feasible here.

In Venezuela, nobody can afford a hamburger. In Norway, nobody can afford a Honda. Same shit, different scale. Middle class Americans live like kings compared to their Scandinavian counterparts.

And yes, those countries are far from perfect and the influence of "social democrats" in government in those places has been declining. Whether they are nice places to live or not, it isn't because of socialism.
