Kroger gets approval for home Covid-19 test kit
Kroger Co. has received Food and Drug Administration emergency use authorization for its Covid-19 home testing kit.
The Kroger Health Covid-19 Test Home Collection Kit will first be used starting this week by frontline workers at Cincinnati-based Kroger (NYSE: KR), the nation’s largest operator of traditional supermarkets. Those tests will be based on medical need.
Kroger Health, the company’s health care division, will quickly expand the coronavirus test kits’ availability to other companies and organizations in the coming weeks. It has a goal of processing up to 60,000 tests a week by the end of July.
Tests will initially be available only to people who are with contracted employers and organizations. Tests might become available directly to consumers in the future, a Kroger spokesperson said.
The testing kit will initially be available in Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio, Tennessee, Utah and Virginia. It will add other states in the coming weeks. Kroger has 2,757 stores in 35 states across the country.
Kroger Health expects to have confirmed test results within 72 hours in most cases. It’s teaming with Covington-based Gravity Diagnostics, a full-service clinical laboratory, to process test results.
There’s no cost for the test for eligible patients who meet criteria for likely Covid-19 exposure or infection.
"There is a low probability of the test producing a false positive or false negative," a Kroger official said when asked about the test's accuracy.
Kroger officials say the test combines the safety and convenience of testing at home with the medical expertise of telehealth consultations. That should improve the quality of the collection process.
“Over the past few months, Kroger Health has been providing Americans with access to COVID-19 testing through community test sites across the country,” Colleen Lindholz, president of Kroger Health, said in a news release. “However, we’ve observed some individuals do not have access to transportation or live near these community testing locations. To help ease this burden and provide greater accessibility, we will be offering a home testing solution to our associates first followed by other companies and organizations.”
Patients go to a website to answer screening questions. If they qualify, a health care professional issues a prescription and the home testing kit is shipped to their home within 24 to 48 hours.
