I have spoken to a few mailmen, they say eliminating Saturday delivery would be a nightmare.

No Saturday delivery will not be a nightmare. They are trying to get people to retire. A second round of 'early-outs' just became available after hardly anyone took it the first time. If they did away with Saturday delivery, even less people will retire early as that is the main thing that mailman do not like about their job. No mail on say Tuesday, would be the f----ing nightmare. I have been a carrier for 23 1/2 years. It is a hard job,
and most of the time you work your ass off. Battling the weather is not f----ing easy. The job has changed a lot. When I first started, you spent an average of about 4 hours sorting the mail, then 4 hours delivering it on the street. Now, the letters are sorted by machine, so you spend about 1 1/2
hours sorting mail and 6 1/2 on the street. It may not seem like much, but if you work OT that's about 8 hours on the street. Which in 90 degree heat is f---ing hard. I personally, like the job, but it's not for everybody. I would say about 80 % of the people I work with hate it.
A BIG, BIG problem for the Post Office has always been that they do not hire supervisors and managers outside the PO. They 'promote' from within and evryone either starts out as a carrier or a clerk. And if you are a complete f--k up, and can't put one foot in front of the other, they make you a supervisor. You can imagine what kind of problems that would cause. The place just wasn't managed right.

My father retired a few years back with over 40 plus years as a letter carrier. He would always mention how great the post office was in the 60's and 70's. He would complain about the lazy ass women who worked there and about how the supervisors were too scared to get on anyone because they were afraid of having a grievance filed against them.

I have quite a few stories about the post office but those who work there know some of the real reasons why the place has gone downhill over the past 20 plus years now.

Cries of racism and sexism would arise and they don't want to deal with that.

Im one of them....I think it WOULD be a nightmare...Personally, Id love it...I hate working Saturdays....most of my friends are watching sports in the day, college football and basketball, while Im at work...it sucks....IF and its a big IF...we come out of this recession and mail volume picks back up....Im not saying we couldnt do it 5 days a week, but there would have to be TONS of changes to our routes, buyouts and not to mention, you we would probably lose more business to UPS and FedEx if they were to deliver on Saturdays....people shop for convenience and price....not having an option on Saturday would probably make us lose money...but thats for the guru's of management to figure out....after all, they are the ones making the big bucks...Im just a lowly carrier making my 50,000 a year...I dont have that input....but if they want to goto 5 days, I would probably end up working 10 hrs a day...which is fine with me...a nightmare would be if they didnt deliver on Tuesday as opposed to Saturday....THAT would be stupid not to deliver to businesses on a weekday....

My Brother......

I agree with EVERYTHING you said EXCEPT the promoting within.....maybe its different in Ohio.....the problem here, is just the opposite....they hire managers that just graduated from college and they are ALL about numbers....they have no idea how to do our jobs...they just see numbers the computer spits out....Now I got idiots telling me how to do my job that they have NEVER done....thats the stuff that pisses me off....all they do is look at you dumbfounded with their sheet of paper and they tell you, well...it says you should be only 8 hrs today...why? Cuz that computer says so? I tell them, here you do it in 8 hrs....then I will......they have no answer....they are just worried about making their numbers and getting their bonuses.....I wish they WOULD promote within...like I said, they just dont do it around here....for whatever reason....when I was younger I tried management...I HATED it....how can I tell someone to do something that I KNOW is wrong and feel good about myself? I was like thanks, but Im going back to carrying...ok, Im done with my rant again!

My brother Drew,
Man, that is wild. Sounds like they do things differently where you are. They don't hire people from the outside here at all. Same old shit though,
they go by that computer printout and they don't budge. I love it when you deliver through snowstorms and it's always, 'oh, it shouldn't take you any longer'....and evryone's like wtf???
