Mississippi State over Texas Tech by 3
Ok, before a dig into the archives, a few necessary numbers: Liberty Bowl
dogs are 4-1 ATS in the last fi ve games, and the Big 12 is a surprising 8-3
ATS versus the So-Called Superior SEC in the last 11 bowl games. (Just
wait until Texas and Oklahoma leave the Big 12). Mississippi State is 1-4
ATS when a bowl favorite, and bowl favorites of 2 or more points, when
coming off an SU favorite loss, are 2-9 ATS. We have made fun of the
Cowbells’ least favorite pastime, running the ball, and it’s appalling, just
65 yards per game. Bowl favorites who can’t reach the Century Club on
the ground don’t often succeed, going 11-13-1 SU and 7-18 ATS against
foes who do. Now the cool stuff. Mike Leach was fi red from Texas Tech
after a 2009 controversy involving player Adam James, who claimed
Leach locked him into an electrical closet for hours after James suffered
a concussion. James is the son of formerly infl uential broadcaster Craig
James, and the story blew up nationally. (BTW what the hell ever
happened to Craig James?) Leach was fi red for cause, so no exit money.
He sued, he lost. Does Leach strike you as a guy who forgets something
like that? Even though 12 years have passed, and Leach continued to
work, fi rst at Washington State and now in StarkVegas, don’t believe
for one minute Leach won’t bathe loudly in a hot tub of vengeance in
Memphis, singing Jimmy Buffett tunes.
