Preview: Padres at Pirates

GAME: San Diego Padres (39-46) at Pittsburgh Pirates (48-34)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 07 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
LINE: 136, -147 TOTAL: 6.5

The Pittsburgh Pirates have lost 14 consecutive home series to the San Diego Padres but can end that streak with a victory Tuesday in the second of a three-game series. A walk-off single by third baseman Pedro Álvarez in the ninth inning was the difference in Monday's 2-1 win in the series opener, Pittsburgh's third straight victory overall and eighth in 10 games.

Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen, who earned his fifth straight All-Star selection Monday, is riding a 13-game hitting streak to match his career high established in 2009. "I’m happy I was able to be able to make the All-Star team, especially after the start that I had," said McCutchen, who was batting .225 on May 19. Offense continues to be a nightmare for the Padres, who have scored three runs during their three-game skid and been limited to two runs of fewer in six of their last seven contests to drop a season-worst seven games below .500. Tyson Ross attempts to level the series for San Diego when he opposes Pittsburgh left-hander Francisco Liriano.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN San Diego, ROOT (Pittsburgh)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Tyson Ross (5-7, 3.63 ERA) vs. Pirates LH Franciso Liriano (5-6, 2.99)

Despite walking five batters for the third time in four starts, Ross came away with a no-decision at St. Louis on Thursday after yielding three runs in six innings. He won his previous two turns - both versus Arizona - with six innings of two-run ball on June 26 and his first complete game of the season six days earlier. Ross is 1-2 with a 3.55 ERA in four starts versus the Pirates after holding them to two earned runs on May 30.

Since he was shelled by Minnesota on May 19, Liriano has registered a quality start in seven of his last eight appearances. The turnaround began at San Diego on May 29, when he struck out 11 and permitted three hits over six scoreless innings to drop his ERA to 1.97 in five starts against the Padres. Liriano pitched seven innings for the fifth time in six starts last time out, blanking Detroit on five hits to earn the victory.

WALK-OFFS

1. Pirates LF Starling Marte sat out Monday's game with discomfort in his left side after leaving Sunday's game.

2. Padres 3B Yangervis Solarte has hit safely in seven straight games and nine of 10.

3. Pittsburgh placed 3B Josh Harrison (thumb) on the 15-day disabled list Monday.

Preview: Reds at Nationals

GAME: Cincinnati Reds (37-44) at Washington Nationals (46-37)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 07 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
LINE: 132, -143 TOTAL: 6

The Washington Nationals have been among the hottest teams in the majors recently, but they can't seem to solve the Cincinnati Reds. The visiting Reds look to remain perfect against the Nationals when the teams continue their three-game series Tuesday.

Eugenio Suarez was the unlikely hero with three hits and two RBIs, including the go-ahead home run, in Monday's series-opening 3-2 victory as the Reds improved to 4-0 against Washington in 2015. The Nationals turn to ace Max Scherzer to try to regain the momentum after losing for only the fourth time in their past 16 games. Reds ace Johnny Cueto could be making his final start for Cincinnati with the trade market heating up, and he also has a chance to make an impression as one of five National League players on the Final Vote ballot. One of the biggest challenges for Cueto will be keeping All-Star starter Bryce Harper in check, as Harper is a career .207 hitter in 16 games against the Reds -- including a 1-for-9 performance this season.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Johnny Cueto (5-5, 2.84 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Max Scherzer (9-6, 1.82)

Cueto is coming off perhaps his best start of the season after limiting Minnesota to one run and four hits over eight innings with eight strikeouts. The 29-year-old has recorded quality starts in two straight outings and six of his last eight. Cueto is 6-3 with a 4.06 ERA in 10 career starts against the Nationals including 2-2 with a 3.76 ERA at Nationals Park.

Scherzer has posted a 1.05 ERA with 42 strikeouts and one walk over his last four starts, but he was a tough-luck loser last time out. The 30-year-old gave up two runs in 8 1/3 innings in a 2-1 loss at Atlanta, snapping a streak of three straight wins. Scherzer has faced the Reds only once -- in 2008 -- and allowed one run over six innings in a no-decision.

WALK-OFFS

1. Suarez has recorded multiple hits in seven of the past 12 games he has started.

2. Scherzer was named an All-Star on Monday, joining Harper on the NL squad.

3. Reds LHP Aroldis Chapman was named to the NL All-Star team Monday, joining Cincinnati 3B Todd Frazier.

Preview: Athletics at Yankees

GAME: Oakland Athletics (38-47) at New York Yankees (44-38)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 07 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York
LINE: -109, 101 TOTAL: 8

The New York Yankees are fighting off a trio of other teams for first place in the American League East and could use some momentum heading into the All-Star break. The Oakland Athletics, who visit the Yankees for the start of a three-game series Tuesday, sit in last place in the AL West despite owning a better run differential than New York.

The Athletics are among the most unlucky teams in the league this season and are gearing up to be sellers at the trade deadline at the end of the month despite their plus-49 run differential. Oakland dropped six of its last 10 games and three of those losses came by one run, including Sunday’s 2-1 setback against Seattle. The Yankees are trying to find more consistency in an offense that is averaging 2.5 runs over the last seven games, culminating in an 8-1 loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday. New York could find runs hard to come by again Tuesday when they face Athletics ace Sonny Gray, who opposes Nathan Eovaldi.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, CSN California (Oakland), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Sonny Gray (9-3, 2.09 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Nathan Eovaldi (8-2, 4.52)

Gray battled salmonella last week and is making his first start since earning a win at Texas on June 25. The 25-year-old allowed eight earned runs in 12 innings over his last two turns to see his ERA jump from 1.60 to 2.09. Gray went eight innings against New York on May 29 and scattered two runs and four hits while striking out five to pick up the win.

Eovaldi is riding a hot streak with three straight wins and is coming off the best of the bunch, when he held the Los Angeles Angels scoreless over 5 1/3 innings. The Texan did not go more than six innings in any of those last three starts but let up a total of four runs in 17 1/3 frames. Eovaldi yielded a season-high 11 hits but limited the damage to three runs in 4 2/3 innings at Oakland on May 30 without factoring in the decision.

WALK-OFFS

1. Gray was named to the All-Star Game for the Athletics, though he would be on schedule to pitch again on Sunday and would therefore be ineligible to pitch in next Tuesday’s All-Star Game.

2. New York did not have a starter voted onto the AL All-Star team for the second time since 1992 but 1B Mark Teixeira (20 home runs, 59 RBIs) and RHP Dellin Betances (1.50 ERA, 68 strikeouts in 42 innings) were named as reserves and OF Brett Gardner (.297 batting average, .854 OPS and 15 steals) is up for the Final Vote.

3. Oakland C Stephen Vogt, who was named to his first All-Star roster as a reserve, is 3-for-22 over his last six games.

GAME: Miami Marlins (35-48) at Boston Red Sox (39-45)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 07 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts
LINE: 143, -155 TOTAL: 9

The Boston Red Sox are putting together a strong run up to the All-Star break in an effort to get back into the American League East race before the trade deadline at the end of the month. The Red Sox will try to push their latest streak to three straight wins when they host the Miami Marlins in the opener of a two-game interleague series Tuesday.

The Red Sox are winners of six of their last eight to pull within six games of .500 and scored at least five runs in four straight contests. “Offensively, we've been doing way better the past couple of weeks," David Ortiz told reporters. “I think we've been kind of starting to work into that good offensive team that everybody expected us to be.” The Marlins are not so hot with the bats of late and totaled two runs in dropping the final two of a three-game series at the Chicago Cubs over the weekend. Miami will try to get some support for Dan Haren on Tuesday while the Red Sox counter with Wade Miley.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Dan Haren (6-5, 3.45 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Wade Miley (8-7, 4.53)

Haren is winless in his last five starts but received a total of five runs of support in the first four of that span. The California native had some runs to work with last time out but was reached for four runs (three earned) and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings and did not factor in the decision against San Francisco. Haren is facing the Red Sox for the first time since 2011 and is 2-7 with a 3.41 ERA in 10 career starts against Boston.

Miley was gifted an eight-run lead before taking the mound at Toronto on Thursday and hung around long enough to grab his seventh win in 10 starts. The Louisiana native struggled with his control and issued seven walks while allowing four runs and seven hits in five innings. Miley, who spent the first four seasons of his career in the National League with the Arizona Diamondbacks, is 2-2 with a 0.99 ERA in four career starts against the Marlins.

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox SS Xander Bogaerts, 22, who leads all AL shortstops in wins above replacement and is 9-for-18 over the last four games, is on the Final Vote list for the All-Star Game and is bidding to become the team’s youngest All-Star since Tony Conigliaro (22) in 1967.

2. Miami RF Giancarlo Stanton and 2B Dee Gordon were elected All-Star starters for the NL, though Stanton (broken hand) will be replaced.

3. Boston utilityman Brock Holt, who has started at every position except catcher and pitcher and is batting .295 with a .383 on-base percentage, was named to his first All-Star team.

GAME: Houston Astros (49-36) at Cleveland Indians (38-44)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 07 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Progressive Field, Cleveland, Ohio
LINE: 156, -170 TOTAL: 7

Reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber is in danger of surpassing last year's loss total when he takes the mound for the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night against the visiting Houston Astros in the second of a four-game series. Kluber, who is winless since May 28, must try to cool off a Houston offense that erupted for 16 hits in Monday's 9-4 victory.

Astros right fielder Preston Tucker was 3-for-21 over a five-game stretch before celebrating his 25th birthday with a career-high four-hit performance Monday, including a homer. Marwin Gonzalez, who also went deep, is 7-for-16 during a four-game hitting streak and 3-for-5 lifetime against Kluber. Brandon Moss drove in a pair of runs on two hits to give him nine RBIs in the last six games for Cleveland, which has sandwiched a pair of three-game skids around a five-game winning streak. Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis, named to the AL All-Star team earlier Monday, is riding a 29-game home hitting streak.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Houston), SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Vincent Velasquez (0-0, 4.21 ERA) vs. Indians RH Corey Kluber (3-9, 3.64)

Velasquez is still in search of his first victory after becoming the fourth pitcher in history - and first since 1997 - to not register a decision in his first five major-league starts. He went 6 1/3 innings for the second straight outing in his last turn versus Kansas City, giving up four runs and five hits while matching his season high with seven strikeouts. Velásquez has walked only two batters in his last two starts.

Kluber has been unable to buy a win, falling to 0-4 over his last six starts despite striking out 14 and giving up three earned runs over eight innings in a no-decision at Tampa Bay on Thursday. He also did not factor in the decision in his previous turn at Baltimore, fanning 10 while allowing three runs in seven innings. Kluber has had Houston's number, posting a 3-1 record and 1.90 ERA in four appearances (three starts).

WALK-OFFS

1. Astros 2B Jose Altuve, who will start for the AL in the All-Star game, has hit safely in a career high-tying 14 straight games.

2. Indians OF Michael Brantley is 1-for-14 in his last four games.

3. Houston is 32-4 this season when hitting multiple homers in a game.

GAME: Arizona Diamondbacks (40-42) at Texas Rangers (41-42)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 07 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Globe Life Park in Arlington, Arlington, Texas
LINE: 126, -137 TOTAL: 8.5

The Texas Rangers had a chance to make a move in the American league West standings over the weekend but instead were embarrassed by the Los Angeles Angels. The Rangers will try to pick up the pieces when they welcome the Arizona Diamondbacks for the start of a two-game interleague series Tuesday.

Texas was outscored 33-8 in three straight losses to the Angels, dropping the club one game under .500 at 41-42. “These are gut-check times,” Rangers manager Jeff Banister told reporters. “We have been through this situation earlier this year. You have to find a way to regroup, continue to play and challenge each other to get better.” The Diamondbacks are hovering around the .500 mark as well (40-42) but are playing better of late with wins in three of their last four. Arizona will try to bounce back from a loss Sunday behind Robbie Ray while Texas will turn to ace Yovani Gallardo on Tuesday.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks LH Robbie Ray (2-4, 2.55 ERA) vs. Rangers RH Yovani Gallardo (7-6, 2.56)

Ray is trying to end a three-start losing streak and is looking for some support after the offense managed a total of six runs in those three turns. The 23-year-old did not do himself many favors against Los Angeles on Wednesday, when he was reached for four runs on seven hits and a pair of walks in six innings. Ray faced Texas as a member of the Detroit Tigers last season and was ripped for seven runs and nine hits in 3 1/3 frames to suffer the loss.

Gallardo is having his turn in the rotation pushed up a day to get him two starts this week before the All-Star break, and the veteran is cruising of late. Gallardo allowed two hits in six scoreless innings at Baltimore on Thursday to run his scoreless innings streak to 29 1/3 frames – the fourth-longest mark in club history. The Mexico native is 7-1 with a 2.12 ERA in 11 career starts against Arizona.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rangers 1B Prince Fielder, who ranks second in the AL with a .347 batting average and leads the team with 50 RBIs, was named to the AL All-Star roster while Gallardo was a notable snub.

2. Arizona 1B Paul Goldschmidt (.348, 20 home runs, 67 RBIs) was named to the NL All-Star team and was joined as a reserve by CF A.J. Pollock, who leads all NL outfielders in hits (96).

3. Texas has dropped six straight at home and 11 of its last 15 games overall.

GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (54-28) at Chicago Cubs (44-37)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 07 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The St. Louis Cardinals have claimed eight of 10 meetings with the rival Chicago Cubs this season and look to continue that dominance with a doubleheader at Wrigley Field on Tuesday. The Cardinals have won five straight against the Cubs after a 6-0 victory to open the four-game series.

The Cardinals headed to Chicago slumping at the plate, having scored only 11 runs over their previous six games, but they broke out late in Monday's game. St. Louis scored all six of its runs in the final three innings after being held hitless through six innings by left-hander Jon Lester. The Cubs continue to struggle at the plate, having scored two or fewer runs in 11 of their last 13 contests. Chicago has totaled five runs in its past five games against St. Louis.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals LH Tim Cooney (0-0, 5.40 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Dallas Beeler (2014: 0-2, 3.27)

Cooney is set for his third major-league start and is coming off a quality effort Thursday against San Diego. The 24-year-old limited the Padres to three runs (two earned) over six frames, but he did allow a pair of home runs. Cooney has been impressive at Triple-A Memphis, going 6-4 with a 2.74 ERA over 14 starts in 2015.

Beeler was solid in a couple of spot starts for the Cubs last season, but a lack of run support and some control issues kept him from earning his first major-league win. The 26-year-old is making only his third big-league start and his second at Wrigley Field, where he limited Washington to one unearned run in six innings in his major-league debut. Beeler has struggled to a 1-5 mark and a 6.33 ERA in 13 starts at Triple-A Iowa this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo won the players' vote to earn his second consecutive All-Star nod, while rookie 3B Kris Bryant became the first Chicago rookie named an All-Star since 2008.

2. St. Louis C Yadier Molina, RH Michael Wacha and RH Trevor Rosenthal were named All-Stars on Monday, joining starters SS Jhonny Peralta and OF Matt Holliday, while RH Carlos Martinez is one of five players on the NL ballot for the Final Vote.

3. Bryant is riding a seven-game hitting streak and has reached base in 24 of his past 25 home games.

GAME: Baltimore Orioles (43-40) at Minnesota Twins (44-39)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 07 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota
LINE: -111, 103 TOTAL: 8

Minnesota second baseman Brian Dozier is hoping to land the final roster spot for the American League All-Star team. He may have gained additional votes by belting the decisive two-run homer in the series opener with visiting Baltimore and looks to follow up his starring role in Tuesday's second contest of the three-game set.

Dozier, who is one of five candidates for the last AL spot, has 17 homers after his blast gave the Twins a 4-2 victory. The 28-year-old has never previously landed an All-Star berth -- even when he scored 112 runs last season while posting 23 homers and 71 RBIs -- and is hoping to join reliever Glen Perkins on the squad. Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado is headed to the All-Star Game for the second time and he hit his 18th homer in the opener -- his previous high was 14 in 2013. Orioles center fielder Adam Jones, named to his fifth All-Star team, smacked his 11th homer of the season on Monday.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Kevin Gausman (1-0, 3.09 ERA) vs. Twins RH Kyle Gibson (6-6, 3.04)

Gausman landed himself a rotation spot by blanking Texas on four hits in 6 1/3 innings last Thursday. The strong outing prompted Baltimore manager Buck Showalter to demote Bud Norris to the bullpen in favor of Gausman, who started 20 games for the Orioles in 2014. Gausman lost his lone career start versus Minnesota when he allowed five runs (four earned) and five hits in 7 1/3 innings last Sept. 1.

Gibson has won consecutive starts to follow up a three-game losing streak. He shut out Kansas City on four hits over eight innings in his last turn after giving up two runs and six hits over 6 2/3 innings against Milwaukee in his previous turn. Gibson received a no-decision in his lone outing against Baltimore as he gave up one run and four hits in five innings last Aug. 30.

WALK-OFFS

1. Baltimore LHP Zach Britton and RHP Darren O'Day also were named to the AL All-Star team.

2. Minnesota RF Torii Hunter hit a solo shot in the opener and has five homers over his last 10 games.

3. Orioles SS J.J. Hardy is 1-for-18 over his last five contests.

GAME: Atlanta Braves (41-42) at Milwaukee Brewers (36-49)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 07 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The upcoming All-Star break and Matt Garza’s tender right shoulder gives Tyler Cravy the chance to make his second major-league start Tuesday when the Milwaukee Brewers host the Atlanta Braves. Cravy moves into the rotation in place of Garza, who landed on the disabled list Monday with right shoulder tendinitis and will get almost three weeks off before making his next start.

Cravy’s mound opponent for the middle contest of the three-game series also makes his second big-league start. Atlanta’s Manny Banuelos, one of several prized arms secured during the Braves’ offseason roster purge, fired 5 2/3 scoreless innings Thursday against Washington. Atlanta catcher A.J. Pierzynski finished 4-for-5 Monday and is hitting .347 since June 20. The Brewers, whose eight-game winning streak ended in Monday’s 5-3 loss, finished with eight hits, snapping a streak of seven consecutive games with 10 or more.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, SportSouth (Atlanta), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves LH Manny Banuelos (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Tyler Cravy (0-1, 2.00)

Banuelos, acquired from the Yankees over the winter, was outstanding in his debut until dehydration and cramps forced him from the game after hitting two batters in the sixth. He gave up two hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. The 24-year-old, who made it to Triple-A with the Yankees before missing 2013 after undergoing Tommy John elbow surgery, went 6-2 at Triple-A Gwinnett with a 2.29 ERA before joining the Braves’ rotation.

Cravy impressed the Brewers in his major-league debut June 2, allowing one run on four hits in seven innings in a 1-0 loss at St. Louis. He gave up a run on three hits in two innings of relief Friday at Cincinnati in his only other appearance. Picked by the Brewers in the 17th round of the 2009 draft, the 25-year-old Cravy went 7-5 with a 3.79 ERA at Triple-A Colorado Springs this season after going 8-1 at Double-A Huntsville in 2014.

WALK-OFFS

1. Atlanta CF Cameron Maybin is 11-for-24 through six games in July, raising his average to .297.

2. Milwaukee RF Ryan Braun’s 10-game hitting streak ended Monday; 3B Aramis Ramirez’s eight-game streak also was snapped, as was 1B Adam Lind's run of nine consecutive games with a RBI.

3. The Braves have 32 hits in their past three games after averaging 7.2 in their previous eight contests.

GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (43-41) at Kansas City Royals (46-33)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 07 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri
LINE: 115, -125 N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Tampa Bay Rays look to improve on their major league-best road record when they battle the Kansas City Royals in a split doubleheader on Tuesday. Rain washed out the scheduled opener Monday after the Rays ended a seven-game losing streak with an 8-1 triumph at the New York Yankees on Sunday for their 22nd victory in 36 away from home.

First baseman James Loney has made an impact with his glove and bat for Tampa Bay, going 4-for-13 with three RBIs in three games since returning from a fractured finger. Rays home run leader Steven Souza Jr. (15 blasts) is questionable with a finger injury while Kansas City’s Mike Moustakas, who is second on the team with a .301 average, was placed on the bereavement list Monday. The Royals own the best record (46-33) in the American League despite losing five of their last seven contests. Four Kansas City players – outfielders Alex Gordon and Lorenzo Cain along with catcher Salvador Perez and shortstop Alcides Escobar – will start in next week’s All-Star Game.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, Sun Sports (Tampa Bay), FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Matt Andriese (3-2, 3.24 ERA) vs. Royals RH Edinson Volquez (8-4, 3.48)

Andriese will be recalled to start the second game of the twin bill and he attempts to match his best-major league outing, when he allowed one hit in six scoreless innings against Boston on June 27. The 25-year-old UC Riverside product won three of his last four decisions for the Rays before being sent to Triple-A Durham. Andriese walked only seven batters in 41 2/3 innings in the majors this season and faces the Royals for the first time.

Volquez escaped without a decision when he permitted five runs in as many innings at Houston last Wednesday after winning his previous four starts. The 32-year-old Dominican, in his first season with the Royals, surrendered two homers last time out after giving up five in his first 15 of the campaign. Asdrubal Cabrera is 3-for-8 with a homer versus Volquez, who is 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA in three career starts against the Rays.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tampa Bay RHPs Chris Archer (nine wins, 141 strikeouts) and Brad Boxberger (20 saves) were named the AL All-Star team.

2. Kansas City 1B-DH Kendrys Morales has cooled off of late with just five hits in 30 at-bats with 10 strikeouts in his last eight games.

3. In addition to the four starters, RHPs Wade Davis (nine saves, 0.25 ERA) and Kelvin Herrera (0.98 WHIP) were selected to the AL All-Star squad.

GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (43-42) at Chicago White Sox (37-43)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 07 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: -121, 112 TOTAL: 8

The Toronto Blue Jays rode an 11-game winning streak last month to surge into contention in the American League East, but now find themselves trying to halt a slide as they continue a four-game series at the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. Toronto has dropped six of its last eight following Monday's 4-2 setback and will fall back to .500 with another loss.

Left-hander Felix Doubront is expected to make his first start of the season for the Blue Jays, who are 17-24 away from home. Stellar pitching has fueled a 5-1 hot streak for the White Sox, who have yielded a total of six runs in their last five victories. Melky Cabrera is 8-for-19 with six RBIs during a five-game hitting streak after delivering a tiebreaking two-run double in the eighth inning of Monday's win. Chicago left-hander Jose Quintana will look to continue his mastery of Toronto while seeking to win back-to-back starts for the first time this season.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, SNET (Toronto), CSN-Plus Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays LH Felix Doubront (0-0, 3.86 ERA) vs. White Sox LH Jose Quintana (4-7, 3.81)

Doubront will make his first start since Sept. 20, when he was a member of the Chicago Cubs. A two-time 11-game winner with Boston, Doubront made his season debut in relief at Detroit on Friday, giving up one run on three hits over 2 1/3 innings. The 27-year-old Venezuelan, who logged a 2.44 ERA in nine starts at Triple-A Buffalo this season, is 2-1 with a 3.80 ERA in five appearances (four starts) versus Chicago.

Quintana recorded his seventh consecutive quality start last time out, picking up the victory by striking out eight and limiting St. Louis to one run and six hits over six innings. Still, he has allowed at least nine hits in every other start over his last six turns, including a season-high 11 at Detroit on June 26. Quintana has been exceptional in six career starts versus the Blue Jays, logging a 4-1 record and 1.80 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. Blue Jays 3B Josh Donaldson, who set an All-Star record with 14.09 million votes, reached 20 homers for the third straight season.

2. White Sox 1B Jose Abreu has hit safely in eight consecutive games.

3. Blue Jays RF Jose Bautista and C Russell Martin, also named to the All-Star team, were a combined 0-for-7 in the series opener.

Preview: Angels at Rockies

GAME: Los Angeles Angels (44-38) at Colorado Rockies (35-47)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 07 - 8:40 PM EST
WHERE: Coors Field, Denver, Colorado
LINE: -131, 121 TOTAL: 11

Colorado gold glove third baseman Nolan Arenado wasn't excited to see an off day on the schedule, but the budding superstar was probably in a pretty good mood nonetheless prior to the Rockies' two-game series with the Los Angeles Angels that begins Tuesday at Coors Field. Arenado, who leads the major leagues with 68 RBIs and has 24 home runs while batting .283, was named to the National League All-Star team when reserves were announced Monday - his first trip to the Midsummer Classic.

"I want to play every day,'' Arenado, who finished fourth in the voting, told reporters. "I don't like taking days off. I don't want to pinch-hit. I don't like to do those things. ... The only way I feel I can get comfortable, help the team and feel right is to try to play every single day." Arenado is a shining light in an otherwise dismal season for the last-place Rockies, who begin a six-game homestand prior to the All-Star break after completing a 3-7 road trip with a 6-4 victory over Arizona on Sunday. Los Angeles, which recorded a two-game sweep in May at Angel Stadium to run its winning streak to seven straight against Colorado, began its nine-game road trip by sweeping three from American League West rival Texas over the weekend as it continues a close pursuit of first-place Houston. Los Angeles rookie Andrew Heaney shut down the Yankees for his first major-league victory in his last start and opposes Chad Bettis, who had a two-start winning streak snapped in his last turn.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), ROOT (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels LH Andrew Heaney (1-0, 1.38 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Chad Bettis (4-3, 3.67)

Heaney permitted one run and two hits while striking out seven in seven innings of a 2-1 victory over New York on Tuesday in his second start of the season. ''That was my ... seventh (career) start, so I eventually wanted to get it done,'' the 24-year-old Oklahoma native, who was 0-3 with a 6.93 ERA in five starts with Miami last season, told reporters. ''That's something you can be proud of, to help the team win.'' Heaney, who received a no-decision after allowing one run and four hits in six innings of a 2-1 victory over Houston on June 24, has never faced Colorado.

Bettis yielded three runs, seven hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings of a 4-1 loss in Oakland on Wednesday. The 26-year-old Texan defeated San Francisco and Milwaukee in his previous two turns, allowing four runs in 12 1/3 frames. Bettis, who has never faced Los Angeles, is 2-1 with a 2.84 ERA in five home starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Angels' Albert Pujols (.265, 25 home runs, 53 RBIs), who is hitting .320 with 20 homers in 79 games versus the Rockies, was named an AL reserve - his 10th All-Star Game appearance - despite finishing fifth in voting among first baseman and will start in place of injured Detroit 1B Miguel Cabrera.

2. The Rockies' Troy Tulowitzki (.321, nine HR, 44 RBIs), who owns the longest hitting streak (18) and on-base streak (33) in the majors - both career highs - and is hitting .389 since May 29, finished second in the All-Star voting among shortstops but had to settle for a spot on the Final Vote list.

3. American League manager Ned Yost on Sunday said Los Angeles' Mike Trout (.299, 21 HR, 45 RBIs), the leading vote-getter among AL players, will start in center field in the All-Star Game on July 14 in Cincinnati, flanked by Royals' Alex Gordon in left and Lorenzo Cain.

GAME: Detroit Tigers (42-40) at Seattle Mariners (38-45)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 07 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington
LINE: 152, -165 TOTAL: 7.5

Taijuan Walker attempts to win his sixth consecutive start as the Seattle Mariners host the Detroit Tigers in Tuesday's second contest of a three-game series. The 22-year-old Walker has allowed just six runs during the stretch and hasn't issued a single walk over his last four outings.

Walker has struck out 36 batters in 32 1/3 innings during his winning streak while showing strong glimpses of his potential. He will be looking to improve on the effort of Monday's pitching as Detroit racked up 19 hits off five Seattle pitchers while notching a 12-5 victory. The Tigers slugged four homers with first-time American League All-Star outfielder J.D. Martinez hitting his 11th in his last 13 games to increase his season total to 24, second most in the American League. Designated hitter Victor Martinez went 4-for-5 with a homer, third baseman Nick Castellanos was 4-for-5 with a homer and matched his season best of four RBIs and left fielder Yoenis Cespedes also homered as Detroit won the opener of its seven-game road trip.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, ROOT (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers LH Kyle Ryan (1-2, 4.55 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Taijuan Walker (7-6, 4.34)

Ryan battled control issues in his last turn when he walked five and allowed two run and three hits in four-plus innings while losing to Pittsburgh. He has also struggled to keep the ball in the park and has served up five homers in 27 2/3 innings. Ryan is making his sixth big-league start and has a 4.03 ERA in 38 major-league innings.

Walker's ERA was 7.33 in late May before he began turning his season around by tossing eight shutout innings against Cleveland. That outing began a stretch in which Walker has allowed three or fewer runs in seven consecutive starts, and he is 6-1 during the span. Walker is 2-2 with a 2.79 ERA in six home starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. RHP Felix Hernandez and DH/OF Nelson Cruz are Seattle's All-Star representatives; while LHP David Price, SS Jose Iglesias, injured 1B Miguel Cabrera (calf) and J.D. Martinez are Detroit's selections.

2. Cespedes has 16 career homers against the Mariners — his most against any team.

3. Seattle 2B Robinson Cano had two hits in the opener for his third multi-hit effort over the last six games.

Preview: Phillies at Dodgers

GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (28-57) at Los Angeles Dodgers (47-37)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 07 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California
LINE: 236, -260 TOTAL: 7.5

The Los Angeles Dodgers are aiming to record a string of victories over hapless Philadelphia and look to defeat the visiting Phillies again in Tuesday's second contest of the four-game series. Los Angeles recorded 15 hits — four by second baseman Howie Kendrick — while posting a 10-7 win over Philadelphia on Monday.

Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and catcher Yasmani Grandal were both named to the National League All-Star team on Monday and celebrated by hitting homers in the series opener. Shortstop Jimmy Rollins, who played 14-plus seasons with Philadelphia before being dealt in the offseason, was 2-for-4 and delivered the tiebreaking two-run single in the seventh inning in his first game against his former club. The Phillies have lost seven of their last eight games and have allowed seven or more runs in five of the defeats. Philadelphia starter Chad Billingsley, who won 10 or more games in six straight seasons (2007-12) for the Dodgers before suffering major arm issues, faces his former team for the first time.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Chad Billingsley (0-2, 7.71 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Brett Anderson (5-4, 3.00)

Billingsley underwent Tommy John elbow surgery in 2013 and is trying to regain his previous form. He suffered a strained pitching shoulder in mid-May and was activated from the disabled list July 2 when he allowed seven runs (six earned) and 10 hits in five innings against Milwaukee. Opposing batters are hitting .363 against the 30-year-old Billingsley, who has made four starts this season.

Anderson has won three consecutive decisions as part of a stretch in which he has posted four straight strong outings. He has allowed just five runs during the span and beat Arizona in his last turn when he gave up one run and seven hits in seven innings. Anderson is 2-1 with a 3.09 ERA in eight home starts this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. RHP Zack Greinke and CF Joc Pederson were the other Dodgers selected to the NL All-Star squad, while RHP Jonathan Papelbon was the Phillies' lone representative.

2. Philadelphia 1B Ryan Howard hit a three-homer in the opener — his first blast since June 19.

3. Pederson was 0-for-16 in July before hitting an RBI double in his final at-bat of Monday's game.

Preview: Mets at Giants

GAME: New York Mets (43-41) at San Francisco Giants (42-42)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 07 - 10:15 PM EST
WHERE: AT&T Park, San Francisco, California
LINE: 118, -128 TOTAL: 7

Matt Cain, who was known as San Francisco’s stopper before Madison Bumgarner arrived, looks to put an end to the Giants’ seven-game losing streak Tuesday when he takes the mound against the visiting New York Mets. The Giants fell to .500 for the first time since May 13 in Monday’s series opener, when the Mets recorded their second straight shutout with a 3-0 victory.

The Giants have scored a total of five runs in their last four games, but their offense could receive a boost later this week with the possible return of right fielder Hunter Pence, who has missed the last 30 games with left wrist tendinitis. “He’s really close,” manager Bruce Bochy told CSN Bay Area. “If he gets cleared, my guess is he could be ready before the (All-Star) break.” New York’s Lucas Duda isn’t injured, but the first baseman might benefit from next week’s break after going 9-for-66 over the last 18 games. Fortunately for the Mets, their pitching has overcome the team’s offensive woes by recording a 1.35 ERA over the last 107 innings.

TV: 10:15 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), CSN Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Bartolo Colon (9-6, 4.55 ERA) vs. Giants RH Matt Cain (0-1, 9.00)

After posting a 5.40 ERA in four June starts, Colon opened July by tossing seven scoreless innings and striking out eight last Wednesday against the Cubs. The 42-year-old received a no-decision for the first time in 28 outings, dating back to July 23, 2014. Colon is 2-2 with a 5.46 ERA in five career starts against the Giants.

Cain came off the disabled list last Thursday and yielded five runs over five innings in his season debut against Miami. “It was probably one of the better days I've had feeling-wise, which is really a big positive,” Cain told reporters. “It’s just now ironing it out and making good pitches.” The three-time All-Star is 5-5 with a 3.48 ERA in 13 career starts against the Mets, including 0-2 with a 3.10 ERA in his last four outings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Giants INF Matt Duffy is 4-for-25 over his last seven games.

2. The Mets optioned OF Darrell Ceciliani to Triple-A Las Vegas and recalled OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis.

3. San Francisco has lost 12 of its last 13 games decided by two runs or fewer.
