MLB Five-Inning Odds give baseball bettors a break from the relievers

Last Friday night, in a situation Mariners fans would rather soon forget, Seattle reliever Fernando Rodney took the bump in the ninth inning of a 0-0 matchup with the Tampa Bay Rays and promptly surrendered a leadoff solo home run to Logan Forsythe that proved to be the final nail in the M’s coffin. It was Rodney’s second abysmal showing in as many games and gave the 38 year old a 2-3 record on the season to go along with his MLB-leading three blown saves.

Rangers and Red Sox fans can no doubt sympathize with the Seattle faithful, as Texas’ Neftali Feliz and Boston’s Craig Breslow currently accompany Rodney atop MLB’s blown saves leaderboard.

And it’s not just the fans who are left pulling their hair out at the thought of these relievers being called into action to lock down a win, but bettors as well. Talk to any regular baseball gambler and he’ll be quick to reference a harrowing tale that features a surefire winner gone bust thanks to a subpar performance from the roller-coaster riders known as the bullpen.

Handicapping a team’s relief pitchers is obviously an integral component to beating the sportsbooks when it comes to baseball wagering. But what if one could bypass this volatile element altogether by removing the bullpen from the equation entirely?

Yes, you can dump the bullpen – just like the Mariners recently dropped Rodney as the team’s closer – by focusing more of your attention on “first five-inning bets,” which work exactly like they sound: Betting on which team (or Over/Under) will be winning at the conclusion of five innings of play. Everything after five innings becomes meaningless, everything before the conclusion of five innings becomes that much more important.

“First five-inning bets ostensibly eliminate the toughest element to quantify in handicapping baseball: bullpens,” Gill Alexander, host of the “Beating the Book” podcast and MLB handicapper at Dr. Bob Sports. “In essence, it reduces your bet to starter vs. starter and how they will fare against opposing lineups, which allows for a more focused assessment of handedness (right/left-handed pitchers vs. right/left-handed batters).

“Bettors will lose a bit of line value wagering on first five-inning bets as opposed to full games, but it beats having that sinking feeling of betting on clubs like the Rangers or Diamondbacks where many a five-inning win will instead become a full-game loss courtesy of their suspect bullpens,” said Alexander.

Take a look at the Texas Rangers, who are currently three games over .500 at 30-27, but own a highly profitable 30-22-5 mark in regards to first five-inning wagers. One look at that last sentence and it shouldn’t surprise that the Rangers currently rank 12th in starting pitching ERA, but just 26th in bullpen ERA.

However, one of the big problems for gamblers is that first five-inning data isn’t readily available. So thankfully, Alexander tipped us off to the free mobile app “Onside Sports”, which is one of the few locations offering up first five-inning data. Using the app, we compiled every team’s first five-inning record as well as isolated the Top 10 “Over” teams in regards to first five-inning wagering.
