Preview: Red Sox at Rays

GAME: Boston Red Sox (41-35) at Tampa Bay Rays (32-43)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 28 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The starting rotation problems for Boston Red Sox are becoming more glaring by the game as the team drifts down in the standings. Rick Porcello will try to break the string of sub-par starts and even the three-game series at one win apiece when the Red Sox visit the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday.

Tampa Bay had dropped 11 straight and was back on its heels before Eduardo Rodriguez got the start for Boston on Monday and surrendered five runs in the first inning. The Rays kept the momentum up and pounded out 18 hits en route to a 13-7 victory – matching the team’s season high for runs scored. Tampa Bay got a boost from infielder Nick Franklin, who was recalled from Triple-A Durham last week and recorded his first hits of the season by going 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs on Monday. The Red Sox are allowing an average of 8.5 runs in the last six games and surrendered a total of 29 during a three-game slide.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox RH Rick Porcello (8-2, 3.93 ERA) vs. Rays RH Chris Archer (4-10, 4.70)

Porcello failed to make it through six innings for the first time since May 22 when he was charged with four runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings against the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. The New Jersey native notched just two strikeouts in that start and owns one win in his last six outings. Porcello was more efficient against Tampa Bay on April 20, earning a win while allowing three runs and striking out nine over seven innings.

Archer suffered the loss in three straight starts and six of the last seven to continue a disappointing start to the season. The North Carolina native was reached for four runs and six hits at Cleveland on Wednesday and did not get a lot of help from his offense in a 6-1 setback. Archer was ripped for six runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings to suffer a loss at Boston against Porcello on April 20.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Red Sox optioned Rodriguez to Triple-A Pawtucket after Monday’s loss.

2. Tampa Bay 2B Logan Forsythe is 6-for-13 with a home run and a pair of doubles in the last three contests.

3. Boston UTL Brock Holt is still experiencing concussion symptoms and will not rejoin the team until at least the weekend.

Preview: Indians at Braves

GAME: Cleveland Indians (45-30) at Atlanta Braves (26-50)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 28 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Cleveland Indians continue to mow through their recent schedule and are currently picking on the worst team in the National League. The Indians will try to run their winning streak to 11 straight and clinch a series win when they visit the Atlanta Braves in the second of a three-game interleague set on Tuesday.

Cleveland breezed to an 8-3 win in Monday’s opener and is outscoring opponents 68-22 over the last 10 contests to open up a five-game cushion in the American League Central. The Indians are thriving through the middle of the order and are getting production out of the right field spot from Lonnie Chisenhall, who is 6-for-8 with two home runs and six RBIs in the last two games. The Braves were trying to make their way up the standings with eight wins in 11 games before hosting Cleveland but quickly fell into a hole when starter John Gant had to be removed in the third inning on Monday due to an oblique injury. Tyrell Jenkins saved the bullpen by absorbing four innings but the offense could not keep pace with the Indians’ surging attack.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), FSN Southeast (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Corey Kluber (7-7, 3.59 ERA) vs. Braves RH Matt Wisler (3-7, 4.22)

Kluber recorded his second complete game in three starts when he scattered three hits in a shutout of the Tampa Bay Rays last Tuesday. Cleveland elected to give the former AL Cy Young Award winner an extra day of rest after the nine-strikeout performance. Kluber is seeing Atlanta for the first time in his career and is 10-2 with a 2.30 ERA in 14 career interleague starts.

Wisler tossed back-to-back quality starts in his last two outings but was held out of the decision against the New York Mets on Thursday while allowing three runs in 6 2/3 innings. The 23-year-old recorded a season-low one strikeout as a starter while walking four against the Mets. Wisler will get his first look at the Indians and is 0-3 with a 4.60 ERA in five starts against AL opponents.

WALK-OFFS

1. Indians 2B Jason Kipnis has hit safely in nine straight games and recorded eight RBIs in the last six contests.

2. Braves 1B Freddie Freeman is 5-for-7 with two doubles and a homer in the last two contests.

3. Cleveland rookie CF Tyler Naquin recorded six extra-base hits in the last four games.

GAME: Miami Marlins (41-35) at Detroit Tigers (38-38)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 28 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Detroit Tigers will look to bounce back from a brutal weekend when they wrap up a nine-game homestand with a two-game interleague series against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night. The Tigers opened the homestand with a four-game sweep of Seattle but were decimated in a three-game series versus Cleveland to fall seven games behind the Indians in the American League Central.

“It seems like big swings in how we’re playing,” Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said after his club was outscored 22-8 over the weekend to fall to 0-9 against Cleveland on the season. “It’s kind of been that way all year.” The Tigers' starting rotation is in shambles, posting a 12.83 ERA in the weekend series and poised to send Mike Pelfrey and Daniel Morris to the mound against Miami on three days' rest. The Marlins capped a 7-3 homestand by taking three of four from the major league-best Chicago Cubs. Sitting six games above .500 for the first time since June 12, Miami will be seeking to avenge a season-opening two-game sweep by Detroit as it kicks off a nine-game road trip.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins LH Adam Conley (4-4, 3.56 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Mike Pelfrey (1-7, 4.91)

Conley halted a six-start winless drought with one of his best efforts of the season last time out, earning his first victory since May 16 by tossing eight scoreless innings of four-hit ball against Atlanta. It marked the seventh time Conley has permitted one run or less, but he's also been tagged for at least four runs on five occasions. Conley, who has never faced Detroit, is 2-1 with a 3.83 ERA in eight road starts.

Pelfrey will be pitching on short rest after he was forced to come out of the bullpen Friday night versus Cleveland and responded by allowing three hits over 4 1/3 scoreless innings. Pelfrey has a woeful track record against the Marlins, owning a 1-9 mark and 5.40 ERA in 18 career starts. Slugger Giancarlo Stanton is 9-for-19 with two homers versus Pelfrey while Martin Prado is 10-for-22 with a homer and six doubles.

WALK-OFFS

1. Stanton continues to emerge from a deep slump, going 13-for-35 with two homers, eight RBIs and nine runs scored in the past nine games.

2. Tigers DH Victor Martinez, who homered twice Sunday, is batting .444 with four homers in 10 games against Miami.

3. Marlins OF Marcell Ozuna, batting .320, missed the last two games due to a wrist injury.

Preview: Twins at White Sox

GAME: Minnesota Twins (24-51) at Chicago White Sox (38-38)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 28 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Chicago White Sox are trying to climb back into contention following a dismal month-long tailspin when they continue a six-game homestand on Tuesday night against the laboring Minnesota Twins. The White Sox, winners of five of seven to pull back to the .500 mark, are in the midst of a stretch when they are playing 12 of 15 games at home leading to the All-Star break.

Chicago owned the best record in the American League at 23-10 before dropping 20 of the next 26 games to fall a game below .500. The pitching staff has permitted two runs or fewer in four of the past seven games against the heavy-hitting lineups of Boston and Toronto. "It's just a sign we're getting back on the right track," said outfielder J.B. Shuck after the White Sox took two of three from the Blue Jays over the weekend. "We're playing the baseball we want to play." Minnesota halted a three-game slide by hitting six homers in a game for the first time since 2007 in Sunday's 7-1 victory at the New York Yankees.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), CSN-Plus Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Kyle Gibson (0-5, 6.05 ERA) vs. White Sox LH José Quintana (5-7, 3.04)

A stint of nearly two months on the disabled list has done little to reverse the fortunes of Gibson, who was roughed up for five runs (four earned) and eight hits, including a pair of homers, in a no-decision versus Philadelphia. It was the third start since returning to the rotation for Gibson, who suffered his first loss versus Chicago with six innings of three-run ball on April 11. Overall, Gibson owns a 4-1 record and 2.06 ERA against the White Sox.

Quintana's dry spell stretched to eight starts in a dismal outing on Wednesday, when he surrendered six runs and six walks -- both season highs -- at Boston to remain winless since May 8 against the Twins. Prior to the current drought, Quintana was in a sensational groove, winning four consecutive starts while allowing a total of two runs. He has won both starts against the Twins in dominating fashion this season, giving up two runs and 10 hits in 13 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Chicago has won all six meetings this season, outscoring Minnesota 30-9.

2. Twins 2B Brian Dozier has homered in back-to-back contests to extend his hitting streak to nine games.

3. White Sox RHP David Robertson has converted 20 of 22 save opportunities.

GAME: Los Angeles Dodgers (42-36) at Milwaukee Brewers (34-41)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 28 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Adrian Gonzalez is experiencing his worst season since becoming a full-time player and is hoping a couple days out of starting lineup will help him get on track. Gonzalez will be back in the lineup for Tuesday's series opener against the host Milwaukee Brewers after coming off the bench in each of the last two games.

Gonzalez is batting .264 with a .372 slugging percentage while suffering through his worst season since emerging as a star for the San Diego Padres in 2006. "It's always hard to sit," Gonzalez told reporters. "I'd rather be out there, but it's better for the team because me pressing is not better for the team." Los Angeles salvaged the finale of a four-game set in Pittsburgh on Monday for its seventh victory in 10 games, while Milwaukee had a three-game winning streak snapped on Sunday by losing to Washington. Catcher Jonathan Lucroy had two hits in the finale against the Nationals after experiencing a 1-for-16 funk which dropped his batting average below .300.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Julio Urias (0-2, 4.33 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Chase Anderson (4-7, 5.13)

The 19-year-old Urias will soon be pulled from the rotation as the Dodgers want to limit his innings. He has a 2.35 ERA over his last three turns and has shown good control by issuing just one walk in each of his past five starts. Urias struck out a season-best eight while holding Milwaukee scoreless on two hits over five innings on June 17.

Anderson was torched by the Dodgers for seven runs and six hits in 2 1/3 innings on June 18 and had his next turn in the rotation skipped. He is 1-2 with a 5.05 ERA in seven career starts against Los Angeles and has struggled against Gonzalez (6-for-13, one homer) and Yasmani Grandal (3-for-11, three homers). Anderson has allowed 11 runs in just 7 1/3 innings over his last two starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Dodgers took three of four from the Brewers in Los Angeles earlier this month.

2. Milwaukee 3B Aaron Hill has recorded two hits in six of his past 11 outings.

3. Los Angeles LHP Clayton Kershaw (back) received treatment for minor discomfort on Monday one day after a sub-par performance in a loss to Pittsburgh.

Preview: Cardinals at Royals

GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (39-36) at Kansas City Royals (40-35)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 28 - 8:15 PM EST
WHERE: Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Games at Kauffman Stadium have felt like home contests for the St. Louis Cardinals over the years, but the Kansas City Royals have reclaimed their home-field advantage in the I-70 Series. The Royals look to add to their major league-best 27-10 home record and lock down a series victory over the visiting Cardinals on Tuesday.

Kansas City claimed a 6-2 victory in Monday’s series opener, handing the Cardinals their third loss in their last four road games. St. Louis is 24-15 on the road and had won eight straight away from home before dropping two of three at Seattle over the weekend. Kansas City right-hander Yordano Ventura looks to remain unbeaten at home, where he is 4-0 with a 3.75 ERA in six starts this season. Rookie infielder Whit Merrifield also aims to continue his stellar performance at Kauffman Stadium, where he has hit safely in all 18 career games – the third-longest home hitting streak to begin a career since 1913, trailing Rocco Baldelli (20 games, 2003) and Albert Pujols (19 games, 2001).

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (3-7, 4.41 ERA) vs. Royals RH Yordano Ventura (6-4, 4.54)

Wacha snapped a 10-start winless streak last time out, beating the Cubs on the road for his first win since April 23. The 24-year-old allowed two runs over 6 2/3 innings for his third straight quality start and his fourth in five outings. Wacha is 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA in three starts against the Royals and allowed just one unearned run to beat them last season.

Ventura makes his first start since June 17 following an eight-game suspension. The break came at an unfortunate time for the 25-year-old, who was dominant in his previous two outings, allowing one run over 13 1/3 innings while compiling 15 strikeouts in back-to-back wins. Ventura is 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA in three starts against the Cardinals.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Royals have allowed a home run in 14 consecutive games, the club’s longest streak since a 15-game run in 2009.

2. Cardinals 2B/3B Matt Carpenter went 0-for-4 on Monday but is still a .432 carer hitter at Kauffman Stadium.

3. Kansas City SS Alcides Escobar is 14-for-35 during an eight-game hitting streak and has reached base in 21 consecutive home games.

GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (41-37) at Colorado Rockies (37-39)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 28 - 8:40 PM EST
WHERE: Coors Field, Denver, Colorado
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Carlos Gonzalez is enjoying a torrid display at the plate, with former teammate Troy Tulowitzki and the Toronto Blue Jays receiving an up-close-and-personal view of the latest performance. The 2010 National League batting champion looks to keep his hot hand on Tuesday as the Colorado Rockies vie for an interleague series victory against the visiting Blue Jays.

Gonzalez belted a three-run homer in Colorado's 9-5 triumph on Monday and is 23-for-52 with four blasts, 16 RBIs and 12 runs scored in his last 12 contests. The 30-year-old Venezuelan has throttled Toronto to the tune 16 hits in 43 at-bats over 11 career games but is just 2-for-9 lifetime versus Tuesday starter J.A. Happ. While the Rockies have scored 65 runs en route to winning five of their last eight contests, the Blue Jays have cooled off by losing six of their last eight. Edwin Encarnacion belted a pair of homers and Devon Travis went deep for the second time in three contests in the opener, but both stars will receive their first look at Tuesday starter Eddie Butler.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, Sportsnet, TVA (Toronto), ROOT (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays LH J.A. Happ (9-3, 3.42 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Eddie Butler (2-4, 6.71)

Happ recorded his third straight victory on Wednesday after allowing two runs and six hits in five innings of a 5-2 victory over Arizona. The 33-year-old saw his pitch count elevate after issuing four walks, giving him 30 on the season - just two shy of his total last year. Happ owns a 3-0 career record and 2.36 ERA versus the Rockies while limiting them to a .200 batting average.

Butler's struggles continued on Thursday as the 25-year-old yielded six runs for the second straight outing and matched a season high with 11 hits in a no-decision versus Arizona. Butler is 0-3 in his last seven outings, with eight homers allowed in his last five contests. He also has struggled with his control, permitting eight walks in his last four starts after issuing four free passes in his previous seven appearances.

WALK-OFFS

1. Toronto 3B Josh Donaldson has hit safely in 16 of his last 17 contests.

2. Colorado 3B Nolan Arenado has registered eight RBIs and seven runs scored during his 10-game hitting streak.

3. Blue Jays LF Michael Saunders is 0-for-8 with four strikeouts in his last two contests and just 3-for-28 in his last seven.

GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (33-45) at Arizona Diamondbacks (36-43)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 28 - 9:40 PM EST
WHERE: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

A leaky bullpen served as the only obstacle in Zack Greinke's bid to win an eighth straight start. Greinke will look to get back on the winning track Tuesday, when the host Arizona Diamondbacks attempt to rebound from a shellacking and even the three-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies at one victory apiece.

Maikel Franco bounced back from an 0-for-10 performance in the previous series versus Arizona to drive in three runs in Philadelphia's 8-0 triumph on Monday. The 23-year-old Dominican is 6-for-16 with four runs scored during his four-game hitting streak but just 1-for-7 with two strikeouts versus Greinke. While the Phillies have answered a season-high nine-game skid with wins in three of their last five, the Diamondbacks have dropped three in a row overall to fall to a disastrous 13-26 at Chase Field. Paul Goldschmidt collected two singles in the opener to improve to 12-for-23 with six RBIs during his six-game hitting streak and joined Nick Ahmed in going deep last week against Tuesday starter Jerad Eickhoff.

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Jerad Eickhoff (5-9, 3.36 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Zack Greinke (10-3, 3.61)

Philadelphia's June swoon has not affected Eickhoff, who improved to 3-1 in his last four starts on Thursday after allowing two runs and five hits in six innings of a 7-3 victory over Minnesota. The 25-year-old's lone setback in that stretch came versus Arizona, against which he surrendered a season high-tying nine hits in 5 2/3 frames in a 4-1 loss. Eickhoff has struggled on the road to the tune of a 2-5 record and 4.66 ERA.

Greinke overcame a brief stumble out of the gate to allow three runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings of a no-decision versus Colorado on Thursday. The 32-year-old turned in a significantly better performance in his previous outing as he permitted one run and three hits in eight frames of a 4-1 triumph versus Philadelphia. Greinke owns a scintillating 7-1 career mark against the Phillies with a rail-thin 0.84 WHIP while allowing them to bat just .185.

WALK-OFFS

1. Philadelphia C Cameron Rupp is 7-for-23 with three homers, five RBIs and four runs scored during his six-game hitting streak.

2. Arizona 2B Jean Segura is 14-for-39 with 12 runs scored in his last 10 contests.

3. Phillies LHP prospect Matt Imhof, who was a second-round pick in the 2014 draft, underwent surgery on his right eye after a piece of equipment malfunctioned during a routine stretching regimen.

GAME: Houston Astros (40-37) at Los Angeles Angels (32-45)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 28 - 10:05 PM EST
WHERE: Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The surging Houston Astros resume their six-game road trip Tuesday, when they try for their seventh consecutive victory over the Los Angeles Angels in the middle contest of a three-game series. Houston prevailed 4-2 on Monday for its eighth triumph in nine contests and sits 10 games behind equally hot Texas in the American League West after improving to 23-9 in its last 32 games as its 17-28 start is all but forgotten.

The turnaround coincides with manager A.J. Hinch's decision to replace Jose Altuve with George Springer at the top of the order and while the latter's average only has improved from .254 to .261 since the switch, the former really has turned it on. After going 1-for-13 in his first three games not leading off, Altuve is hitting .411 to raise his AL-best average to .348 and set a career high by reaching base in 30 straight contests - the longest active streak in the majors - after going 2-for-5 on Monday. Los Angeles (32-47) has lost seven of its last eight games and already is assured of beginning a season with three consecutive losing months for the first time since 2006. The Angels' Tim Lincecum split his first two starts since returning to the major leagues and opposes Scott Feldman, who comes out of the bullpen to make his first start since April 25 as he replaces Lance McCullers (blister).

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, ROOT (Houston), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Scott Feldman (4-3, 3.07 ERA) vs. Angels RH Tim Lincecum (1-1, 5.00)

Feldman is 4-1 with a 1.85 ERA in 16 relief appearances after going 0-2, 4.58 in four starts. "We are erring on the side of caution with the All-Star break being 10 or 12 days away and (with) the availability of Scott Feldman to come in and spot start, it's a very simple decision for us to push (McCullers) back," Hinch told reporters. Albert Pujols and Mike Trout are hitting a combined .244 in 41 at-bats versus Feldman, who is 6-9 with a 4.57 ERA in 29 games (18 starts) against Los Angeles after recording one scoreless inning in each of his two appearances this season.

Lincecum allowed four runs and seven hits (two home runs) in three innings of a 6-4 loss to Oakland on Thursday after defeating the Athletics on June 18 in his first major-league start since one year ago Monday. The 32-year-old Washington native, who is 5-0 with a 0.99 ERA in nine starts versus Houston but hasn't faced the Astros since 2012, said he still is making adjustments to his mechanics as he pitches with a surgically repaired left hip. The five Houston players who have faced Lincecum - Altuve, Jason Castro, Carlos Gomez, Colby Rasmus and Luis Valbuena - are a combined 6-for-39 with 15 strikeouts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Astros SS Carlos Correa, who was named AL Player of the Week on Monday after going 8-for-24 with three home runs, nine RBIs and four doubles, was 0-for-3 with a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the ninth inning Monday.

2. Trout (.319) has recorded multiple hits in five straight games - three in each of the last three - and is 13-for-22 with five RBIs during that stretch after going 3-for-5 and homering for the third consecutive contest Monday.

3. Houston had its 11-game home run streak halted Monday.

GAME: Baltimore Orioles (45-30) at San Diego Padres (33-44)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 28 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Petco Park, San Diego, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Baltimore Orioles are in pursuit of the June record for homers in a month but their next two games will be in pitcher-friendly Petco Park against the San Diego Padres. Baltimore has smacked 51 homers this month entering Tuesday's series opener against the Padres and is four shy of the major-league mark set by the 1996 Oakland Athletics.

Baltimore leads the majors with 120 homers and the power show could be helped by the presence of San Diego starter Erik Johnson on the mound. Johnson has served up seven homers in 14 2/3 innings since joining the Padres and has allowed 12 in 26 1/3 innings this season. Mark Trumbo (major league-leading 22 homers entering Monday) and Ryan Flaherty each hit homers off Johnson when the Orioles posted a 7-2 victory over the Padres last Wednesday. San Diego has won six of its last eight games as it begins a five-game homestand against American League East teams Baltimore and the New York Yankees.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Ubaldo Jimenez (4-7, 6.97 ERA) vs. Padres RH Erik Johnson (0-5, 8.54)

Jimenez defeated the Padres when paired against Johnson and allowed two runs on four hits over six innings while striking out seven. The strong outing followed a stretch in which Jimenez had a horrific 11.47 ERA over a seven-appearance stretch (six starts) and gave up five or more runs on five occasions. Jimenez is 8-4 with a 3.87 ERA in 14 career starts against San Diego and has struggled with Matt Kemp (14-for-41, two homers).

Johnson is 0-3 with a 9.82 ERA in three starts since being acquired from the Chicago White Sox as part of the package for starter James Shields. He has allowed five or more runs in each of the outings and was touched up for six runs and nine hits in four innings in the loss to the Orioles. "I think the No. 1 thing for him is we've got to keep the ball in the ballpark, give our defense an opportunity to make plays," Padres manager Andy Green told reporters. "If he does that, he's going to have the opportunity to be successful."

WALK-OFFS

1. The Orioles lead the American League East with a 45-30 record but are just 14-17 on the road.

2. San Diego LF Melvin Upton has seven multi-hit outings in the last 13 games and is batting .373 during the stretch.

3. Baltimore CF Adam Jones went 4-for-4 with a walk in Sunday's win over Tampa Bay and is 15-for-35 with two homers over the past eight games.

GAME: Pittsburgh Pirates (37-40) at Seattle Mariners (38-38)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 28 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Pittsburgh standout Andrew McCutchen is displaying signs of breaking out of a deep June slump as the Pirates open a two-game series against the host Seattle Mariners on Tuesday. McCutchen had two hits in two of the past three games to inch his average up to .211 for the month and two of his three June homers also have come during the stretch.

The Pirates suffered through a stretch of 13 losses in 15 games while McCutchen floundered and then suddenly recorded three straight wins over the Los Angeles Dodgers before falling 5-4 in Monday's series finale. The deep swoon all but knocked Pittsburgh (37-40) out of the National League Central race and the immediate goal is staying part of the wild-card chase. Seattle also has experienced a miserable June with an 8-17 mark that includes losses in seven of the past nine games and has slipped into third place in the American League West. The Mariners served up 13 extra-base hits - including six homers -- in Sunday's 11-6 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates LH Jonathon Niese (6-5, 4.93 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Hisashi Iwakuma (6-6, 4.45)

Niese has lost three consecutive decisions and has a horrid 9.18 ERA during the stretch. He has allowed six homers during the span and has served up 18 in just 87 2/3 innings, closing in on the career-worst 22 he allowed in 190 1/3 innings in 2012 as a member of the New York Mets. Niese lost his lone career start against Seattle on July 21, 2014, when he gave up four runs and 11 hits in six innings.

Iwakuma was roughed up in his last outing after winning five of his previous six decisions. He allowed five runs and 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings in the loss to Detroit and he served up three homers for the third time in the past five starts. Iwakuma has struggled at home this season with a 5.17 ERA and .297 batting average against while going 3-2 in six starts.

Preview: Athletics at Giants

GAME: Oakland Athletics (33-43) at San Francisco Giants (49-29)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 28 - 10:15 PM EST
WHERE: AT&T Park, San Francisco, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Oakland Athletics have been difficult to face on the road of late and will be even tougher Tuesday as they are expected to activate Josh Reddick for the second contest of their home-and-home four-game interleague series against the host San Francisco Giants. Reddick, who has not played since May 19 because of a fractured left thumb, is hitting .322 with five home runs and 18 RBIs this season.

Reddick's bat could help the Athletics even more as they have won five of their last six on the road - including Monday's 8-3 triumph in the series opener. Marcus Semien belted his 15th home run, tops among American League shortstops, and drove in four runs while Danny Valencia avoided back-to-back hitless efforts for the first time since May 25 at Seattle and May 27 versus Detroit at home. Monday's loss was only the fourth in 18 overall games for San Francisco, which fell to 7-2 in its last nine at home. Angel Pagan went 1-for-3 on Monday to extend his hitting streak to eight games but struck out twice, matching the total from his previous seven contests.

TV: 10:15 p.m. ET, CSN California (Oakland), CSN Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Kendall Graveman (3-6, 4.68 ERA) vs. Giants RH Albert Suarez (3-1, 3.68)

Graveman improved to 2-0 over his last six starts Thursday, limiting the Angels to two runs in 6 2/3 innings at Los Angeles. The 25-year-old native of Alabama was even better in his previous outing - also against the Angels - as he allowed one run and three hits over seven frames but did not factor in the decision. Graveman lost his only career outing versus the Giants on July 26, when he yielded four runs and seven hits in only 1 1/3 innings at San Francisco.

Suarez made his fourth start of the season Thursday, notching the victory after giving up three runs - two earned - and four hits over five innings at Pittsburgh. The 26-year-old Venezuelan has surrendered three runs in each of his turns in the rotation while yielding a total of five in six relief appearances. Suarez, who never has faced Oakland, settled for a no-decision in his only home start on June 7 after allowing three runs - two earned - and five hits in 6 1/3 frames against Boston.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Athletics are expected to activate LHP Sean Manaea from the disabled list to make the start in Wednesday's home meeting with the Giants.

2. San Francisco SS Ramiro Pena has notched two hits in five of his last seven games, including each of his last two.

3. Oakland claimed RHP Nick Tepesch off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers and assigned him to Triple-A Nashville while also designating LHP Eric Surkamp for assignment.
