Mountaineer - Race #3 - Post: 7:44pm - Maiden Special - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $14,100 Class Rating: 73

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#1 MASHUK (ML=3/1)
#3 REDNECK LAZY (ML=2/1)

MASHUK - Rider jumped on this horse's back for the initial time on Jun 3rd. Should be in tune with the horse even better today. This horse is in nice condition, having run a strong race on June 3rd, finishing third. Have to watch for this animal on the grass. Last race at Mountaineer, scored a big turf figure. Have to think he can do it again right here. Went a route in a Maiden Special race at Mountaineer in the last race from an outside post position. Moving to the inside at a similar distance should help this horse. A repeat of that latest race on June 3rd where he recorded a speed rating of 63 looks lofty enough to score in this event. REDNECK LAZY - Don't often see a positive return on investment like +97. This rider/handler tandem has done well together over the last twelve months. Like the way this gelding's finish positions keep getting better. That's a sure sign of improving form.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 TARIFF (ML=4/1), #2 KORUS WARRIOR (ML=8/1), #7 DELIBERATE HASTE (ML=8/1),

TARIFF - Improbable that the fig he recorded on Jun 16th will hold up in this affair. KORUS WARRIOR - This colt garnered a speed rating in his last contest which likely isn't good enough in today's event. DELIBERATE HASTE - Awfully hard to bet on this horse when he hasn't been showing any indications of eagerness lately.

MLB Preview: Padres (34-38) at Giants (38-33)

Game: 1
Venue: AT&T Park
Date: June 23, 2015 10:15 PM EDT

Plating runs has come easy for the San Francisco Giants on the road but it's been a different story at home.

That could spell trouble in Tuesday night's series opener with the visiting San Diego Padres as Odrisamer Despaigne has routinely shut them down.

The Giants (38-33) cut into Los Angeles' NL West lead by taking two of three at Dodger Stadium over the weekend, scoring 15 times in the victories. San Francisco's average of 5.11 runs on the road is second in the majors but it's averaging 3.00 at home - baseball's worst mark since the 2011 Giants were at 2.91.

"Sometimes you do press. Why at home is hard to explain," manager Bruce Bochy said after Sunday's 10-2 loss. "You got to keep fighting and hopefully press on the gas a little bit and get things going. It's a good offense if you look at the numbers. It's too good to be going through what we're going through."

The Giants had lost nine straight at home before beating Seattle last Tuesday. Cleanup hitter Buster Posey is batting .179 with three RBIs in his last nine at AT&T Park while Brandon Belt is hitting .185 in his past eight there.

Making matters worse, the Giants are batting .101 against Despaigne (3-5, 4.92 ERA), with Brandon Crawford going 1 for 8 and Posey hitless in 10 at_bats.

Despaigne went 2-0 with a 0.45 ERA in three starts against San Francisco as a rookie last season. He lowered that ERA to 0.36 by throwing 4 2-3 perfect innings of relief in his only 2015 matchup April 9.

The right-hander had a 2.51 ERA over a five-start stretch before permitting six runs - four in the first inning - and eight hits in six innings of Wednesday's 16-2 loss at Oakland.

'It was just one of those situations where it happened so fast," he said.

San Diego (34-38) is having its own offensive problems, scoring three runs or fewer in eight of 10 games. The Padres are batting .175 with runners in scoring position over that stretch and dropped to 2-5 since manager Bud Black was fired with Sunday's 7-2 loss to Arizona.

They have the tough task of facing Madison Bumgarner (7-4, 3.09), who has lost his last two starts despite a 1.69 ERA. He was outdueled by Felix Hernandez on Wednesday, giving up two runs and four hits while striking out nine in eight innings of a 2-0 loss to the Mariners.

Bumgarner has a 1.91 ERA in his last five home starts, a stretch that began when he held the Padres to two hits over 7 1-3 innings in a 2-0 win May 4. The left-hander has limited San Diego to two earned runs or fewer eight times in 10 matchups at AT&T Park.

However, Bumgarner's worst outing of 2015 also came against the Padres. He surrendered five runs and 10 hits in three innings of a 10-2 road loss April 11, his shortest start since 2011.

Justin Upton is 3 for 5 against Bumgarner this season and 12 for 30 all-time. Upton's .400 average is the highest of any of the 29 players that have faced Bumgarner at least 25 times.

Derek Norris has also given Bumgarner trouble, going 6 for 14 (.429) but Matt Kemp is 4 for 25 (.160) against him since 2012.

Norris, 3 for 20 against the Giants this season, is hitting .333 versus lefties compared to .233 against righties.

Angels place Weaver on disabled list
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Right-hander Jered Weaver's rough season turned even worse Sunday when he

was placed on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his left hip.

Weaver will have a battery of tests Monday, including an MRI.

"I think it just got to a point in the last couple starts where you see mechanically he's not where he wants to be," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said before the Angels' 3-2 loss to Oakland. "His shoulder, his arm feels great, but we have to find out exactly what's going on and hopefully reset and get him back out there."

Weaver is 4-8 with a 4.75 ERA and has lost four straight starts, matching his longest such skid of his career.

Weaver said he has been dealing with some soreness in his left hip for years.

"There's always been stuff lingering," Weaver said. "Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad. Most of the time I can kind of get it to where it needs to be before a start day, in between starts. But just decided to get it to where it needs to be instead of having to battle against it all the time, give it some rest and get it back to where it needs to be and get back out there."

Weaver, though, said his sore hip had "very little" to do with his rough season and a loss of velocity.

"There's more to it than just the hip stuff," Weaver said. "Obviously velocity's down, stuff isn't as crisp. There's some things that I got to get figured out so hopefully this is a good time to do it."

Scioscia said he's hopeful that Weaver will be able to recover with rest and treatment and avoid any type of surgery.

How much pain has Weaver been in on the mound?

"It was just like a sharp pain every now and again," Weaver said. "It's just one of those things where you'd get it loosened up and it would feel great but you keep pounding on it and it would tighten up again. It wasn't anything drastic, just something me and (Scioscia) thought would be better to iron out now than toward the end of the season. Go on the DL and get this figured out and move on and come back and be strong again."

Weaver gave up four runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings Saturday in a 4-1 loss to Oakland.

The Angels have an off day Thursday, which would have been Weaver's day to start. They won't need someone to fill his spot in the rotation until June 30 against the Yankees.

Lefty Andrew Heaney, who's at Triple-A Salt Lake, is one potential candidate, Scioscia said. Right-hander Nick Tropeano, who is expected to return to action for Salt Lake from a shoulder injury this week, is another possibility. Righty Cory Rasmus (abdominal surgery, March 2015), who's on a rehab assignment with Salt Lake, and Angels lefty Jose Alvarez, a reliever, are two other possibilities.

"There's a couple options where you'll probably have to expand your pitching staff, a couple where you could just plug a guy in," Scioscia said.

To fill Weaver's spot on the 25-man roster, the Angels recalled outfielder Alfredo Marte from Salt Lake.

Cardinals ready to activate RHP Lynn
The Sports Xchange

The team with the best record in baseball looks to get stronger later this week.

St. Louis right-hander Lance Lynn will come off the 15-day disabled list Thursday and face off against the Miami Marlins.

Lynn landed on the disabled list with a right forearm strain and is eligible to be activated on Tuesday.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, manager Mike Matheny doesn't want to push back starts for right-hander Carlos Martinez and left-hander Jaime Garcia.

Matheny said Lynn passed every test on Sunday and that "he's good to go."

Lynn has compiled a 4-4 record with a 3.07 ERA.

Left-hander Tyler Lyons replaced Lynn in the rotation and made two starts -- both wins. Matheny was unsure if Lyons would stay in the bullpen or be sent back to Triple-A Memphis.

Bonus Play Tuesday

ASTROS (McHugh) @ ANGELS (Wilson) 10:05 PM

Take: ANGELS -115

Current form for the two starting pitchers will be the key ingredient for me tonight as the Astros try to even up their series with the Angels.

This has not been a good stretch for Houston righty Collin McHugh. He finally got his K rate back in order last start and settled down after a rough opening frame against the Rockies. But McHugh also had control problems throughout and was fortunate to escape with the win as the Rockies squandered a multitude of opportunities throughout the game. In other words, I’m not ready to assume that McHugh has shaken his recent slump and I think he’s going to be vulnerable again tonight.

CJ Wilson is on a mini-roll for the Angels. The southpaw has been attacking hitters rather than nibbling as he has a tendency to do at times. Wilson is a solid starter when he’s aggressive with his four-seamer. He gets in trouble when he tries to finesse the opposition. That’s when the walks start showing up and the pitch count goes through the roof.

The Astros are what should be a good matchup for Wilson. They’re a very aggressive team and if the right Wilson arrives on the mound tonight, it’s a lineup he’ll have a good chance to contain. Houston has been at its offensive worst facing lefties on the road, so I like the idea of backing Wilson tonight.

One concern is the late inning bullpen work for the Halos. Joe Smith had a bad outing on Monday night and that meant a four-out save from Huston Street. Fortunately, Street should still be available tonight. But Smith probably won’t be and I’m not sure Trevor Gott would be an option as he’s now pitched back to back games. But the Houston pen is also a little weary at this point, so while it’s not a perfect scenario for the hosts, it’s not awful either.

The Angels have one other big factor on their side here, and his name is Albert Pujols. There is no one hotter than Pujols over the last month or so. McHugh has been vulnerable to the long ball, and I wouldn’t be shocked if Pujols does more damage tonight.

The number here is very reasonable given the recent form of the two starting pitchers and I don’t see enough to discourage me elsewhere, so I’m going with the Angels for tonight’s Bonus Play.

Top road umpire working this game Tuesday

Home teams have struggled mightily with umpire Jeff Kellogg working behind home plate this season, so it will give Philadelphia Phillies' backers a glimmer of hope that he'll be working Tuesday's meeting with the New York Yankees.

The road team has posted a 9-3 record in Kellogg's games, making him the best umpire for away teams (according to winning percentage). Furthermore, the visitor has won the past six games that Kellogg has worked heading into Tuesday's matchup.

The Phils are presently +214 dogs and are slated to start Sean O'Sullivan while the Yankees (-235) will counter with CC Sabathia.

Bronx Bombers slugging their way to over streak

The New York Yankees have slugged their way to five consecutive overs, following their 11-8 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies Monday night.

The Bronx Bombers are scoring a ridiculous 8.4 runs per game over this five game run, almost good them to out them over each total without their opponent scoring.

New York continues their series with the Phillies Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. Sean O'Sullivan (4.79 ERA, 4-5 O/U) gets the call for the Phillies, while C.C. Sabathia (5.31 ERA, 8-6 O/U) goes for the Yanks. The total is currently 8.5.

Game of the Day: Dodgers at Cubs

Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago Cubs (+111, 7)

The Chicago Cubs take their longest winning streak in more than a month into the second contest of their four-game series with the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday. The Cubs have won three straight after opening the set with a 4-2 victory behind a pair of home runs by rookie Kris Bryant.

Bryant powered the Cubs past Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw on Monday, and Los Angeles hopes Zack Greinke can even the series. The Dodgers have totaled four runs in the last three games Greinke has started and have scored two or fewer six of the last seven times he has taken the mound. Los Angeles has dropped six of its last eight contests and is trying to avoid losing a third consecutive series. The Cubs need a deep outing from Jason Hammel after leaning on the bullpen for seven innings on Monday following Tsuyoshi Wada’s departure with a shoulder cramp.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, SportsNet Los Angeles, CSN Chicago

LINE HISTORY: Books opened the Cubs +113 and the total at 7.

INJURY REPORT: Dodgers – LF Carl Crawford (Mid July, oblique). Cubs – CF Dexter Fowler (Doubtful, ankle), 2B Tommy La Stella (15-day DL, ribs).

WEATHER REPORT: Temperatures will be in the high-60s under clear skies. Wind will blow from right to leftfield around six miles per hour.

WHAT CAPPERS SAY: “Dodgers’ Achilles’ heel is their road record of just 12-19. Kershaw is pitching like himself again, but the offense is sputtering right now, plating just 14 runs in six games before Sunday’s 10-run outburst. Both 1B Adrian Gonzalez and OF Joc Pederson have gone from red hot to icy cold. The Cubs were one of four MLB teams last week that put up at least 15 runs on their inter-league opponent when they blanked the Indians 17-0 on Wednesday (Orioles, Phils, and Rays were the others). They finished the week on a high note against Twins, but have a tough schedule ahead.” Al McMordie.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Zack Greinke (5-2, 1.81 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Jason Hammel (5-2, 2.89)

Greinke has allowed two runs or fewer in 11 of his 14 starts, including each of his last three outings. The 31-year-old struck out eight in seven scoreless innings against Texas in his last turn, but he didn’t receive a decision and remains winless in eight starts since May 5. Greinke is 4-2 with a 4.30 ERA in seven starts against the Cubs but 0-2 with an 11.57 ERA in three outings at Wrigley Field.

Hammel had his last outing shortened by rain and received a no-decision after allowing three runs (two earned) in four innings at Cleveland on Thursday. The 32-year-old has been solid in five home starts, going 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA. Hammel is 2-5 with a 5.52 ERA in 14 games (10 starts) against the Dodgers, but he has faced them only once since 2011.

TRENDS:

* Over is 6-1-1 in the last eight meetings.
* Cubs are 1-4 in their last five games with umpire Paul Emmel behind home plate.
* Dodgers are 1-4 in their last five road games.
* Under is 5-1 in Greinke’s last six starts overall.

CONSENSUS: Fifty-nine percent are backing Grenike and the Dodgers.

Holy $hit betting stat of the day: Biggest dog of the day on hot streak
By Andrew Avery

The largest underdog on the Major League Baseball board has recorded wins on four consecutive days and five of the last six heading into Tuesday’s action.

The current streak began with the Texas Rangers defeating the Chicago White Sox 2-1 as +179 moneyline underdogs back on Friday June 19. That was followed by Saturday’s biggest dog, the Tampa Bay Rays (+162), beating the Cleveland Indians 4-1. The streak improved to three as the Philadelphia Phillies (+170) trumped the St. Louis Cardinals 9-2 on Sunday.

Finally, the Phils did it again with an 11-8 win over the New York Yankees as +254 moneyline dogs Monday.

The Texas Rangers (+249) posted a 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers back on Wednesday, June 17, before losing 1-0 (+232) to the Dodgers the following day – the only loss in the past six days.

The four gamer is the longest such streak by the biggest dog this season. There have been two separate occasions where the day’s biggest dog won three-straight before failing to make it four.

The fate of the current streak falls with the Phillies once again. Philly is +213 at the Bronx Bombers Tuesday evening.

Overall in games involving the day’s biggest underdog, the fave has the straight up edge winning 46 of 79 games, with the Over/Under count sitting at 43-33-3 heading into Tuesday’s schedule.
